I had a surprising twist on this Google Maps Find!
Sometimes when I find something on Google Maps, I can sense that it most likely won't be anything exciting or all that interesting, but that doesn't stop me as I love the adventure.
With this location, I had the mindset that I would find this location, identify it and leave knowing that I accomplished my goal. One thing that often keeps me going is my curiosity and this time, my curiosity led me to making a discovery of something I've never encountered in the woods. Just goes to show that even with the most ordinary of locations that something even better can come from it.

Hey JP, always enjoy your adventures. I am in Construction - did many sewer plants and super fund sites thru the years. My experience tells me you were at a Superfund site, or a Water Pollution Control Project Site. They treat the water with equipment inside of those buildings for only a few years. When the water becomes to acceptable levels, they stop treatment and tear the structures down. The lower pond with the wheel was probably a settling pond to slow the flow and allow natural settling. It may have to be cleaned out a few times a year, etc. The wheel was probably for Aeriation or some sort of metering device to measure flow. No way that little thing could generate any amount of electric. Neenah Foundry is still in business. They make manhole covers and precast accessories. My guess that job was done in the late 90s Look forward to the next adventure. BTW, you never said where this was, unless I missed it ? Assuming coal region NE PA.

Still community's aqueduct water service system citern(not a lake, a pound or a pool at this point; that's why the restricted access: its the natural open water citern of the aqueduct system service. Reminds me of the Chicksaw Ordinance works in Millington Tennessee, it was an Ammunition Factory where the govt went in long after it was demoed and decommisioned, and built a network of drainage culverts and an underground system to weep and filter off the underground contaminants from the ww2 factory. There were several waterwheels in the woods there that mustve been part of the drainage system to keep the factory dry when it was in operation.

My guess is that the water wheel was used as a sensor to show that that the pond was overflowing and by how much. Probally tied into some type of FM radio transmitter connected to the buildings. Not really big enough for a large amount of power more likely a magnetic sensor. As others have said some type of hasmat clean up site.

Hi Jay - I didn't see any signs of acid mine drainage, and the odor you described had me wondering about a possible old landfill in the area. That would make sense in terms of the containment basins and what appeared to be monitoring infrastructure. Another interesting location. 💙

My guess is the pond/reservoir is something to do with mine waste/runoff based on how you said that it smells. It’d be interesting to see what a water test would find in it.

Brackish water is salt water which mixes into fresh water. Tidal rivers are brackish for some distance upstream.

There definitely was a system there. Might've been a small scale treatment facility. That steel platform most likely covered the shaft & gear(s). There could've been a generator/turbine there when the building was there. Very interesting area.💙

A couple random thoughts on the water wheel. Note that flow gauges are generally of an impeller type rather than any sort of wheel, but in the case where a wheel might be used, the design would consist of paddle configuration rather than any sort of undershot or overshot device which would use either the force or the weight of the flowing water to do actual work, which this wheel seemed to be designed to do. Problem is it’s not anywhere near big enough to use enough mechanical advantage to turn a turbine, and it’s obviously not anything designed to turn a mill. So, what is it? Well, it’s a sort of measuring device and mechanical appliance all in one. It cleverly measures the flow of the water running through it by using the volume of water it contains in each compartment on the wheel and also the speed at which it is turning. The shaft would be geared through to a device which dispenses some sort of water treatment chemical at a rate which is perfectly measured and calibrated using the volume of water measured by the wheel. That building next to the wheel housed the dispensing equipment and chemicals.

💙 Hm ... Based on the sulfury smell and ponds to collect whatever settles out of the water my guesses are either some sewage treatment facility further upstream because of the white-ish streaks on top of the water in the 2nd pond near the leaves on the left side, which i know just too well from our own small house sewage treatment contraption, or, because there was mining going on there, something to settle out stuff from the water because it's mine drainage ... Looks a little too clear for me though for that. Not an expert. Just guessing. Interesting once again and just what was needed here after a not so great day, thank you :)

My Thoughts here. The water is run off from a mine. That's why it not smell so good. The holding ponds stored water for times when water might run low of now flow. The water wheel probably turned a generator that made electricity for the mine. I wonder what they where mining? Coal? But then the coal you found could have been used for a boiler or so.

With the above comments, mining operation - maybe iron (coal?) The wheel probably either generator for electricity or ore processing. Ponds definitely mine related. My old hometown of Butte,Montana has a few waste ponds(three locks on the fences tells me probably EPA, ANOTHER GOVERNMENT OUTFIT, AND THE COMPANY WITH HOLDINGS. ARCO was the Butte last company holding the bag in 1982. Lol😂 Neenan foundry realky famous iron works, ever look at many old man hole covers,Neenan be blazened on there!) Great vid. The pipe is stainless and is marked 6-6-18. It's marked on the inside of the pipe (you can see it when you're on the side of the water wheel marked with a paint marker. When you walked away and came back down to the other side of the wheel, the pipe is marked on the outside top. The wheel also says DRY 92723. I wonder if that's 9-27-23.

@@JPVideos81 Perhaps that pipe was replaced on that date. Hard to tell if it's 5 years old or 50 years old, as being stainless it won't rust anytime soon. The wheel doesn't look in terrible shape for plain steel either. But that could be made out of a weathering steel (cor-ten).

@@Johnketes54 6-6-18 as in 2018 and 9-27-23 as in 2023. Stainless isn't really that modern. Dating back at least a century. But it wasn't until the 1950s when it started to become easier to make, where it was used in aerospace, and then eventually industrial, and then eventually a common mass-produced material.

Depending on the date format, it was either replaced September 27th 2023, or July 23, 1992.

@@JPVideos81 I remember the wheel caught bad stuff like plastic and such and the platform beside it had a roots blower on it that ariated the waste and then the runoff returned to a creek. I remember the owner of the trailer park complaining about things that got flushed and collected on the wheel, I watched him clean it once and there were alot of personal hygiene products on it, it was pretty gross!😊

Every time you show that Culvert plugged up with leaves I thought about post 10. then you actually mentioned him gave him a shout out that was pretty neat. You always push thru and sometimes the surprise find is better than what you were searching for ....water wheel was a fun find for sure .....loved the sweet little steams and water falls.Glad it isn't " smellavision " I hate the rotten egg smell of sulphur water . When we drilled our first well it was that stinking water ...ugh...had to drill deeper ... Live and learn . I have to say your "investigation skills" are excellent! Love this adventure! That boulder is incredible, and the nature's carpet is beautiful. I know I have said this before, but I just love the sound of the water of those little flowing streams and waterfalls. How neat was that to find the waterwheel! I think you are right that there was once a structure there and it had something to do with operating and maintaining the water wheel and maybe had something to do with water treatment or testing or power? I'm not sure, but what a great find! You sure had fun with the wheel, it looked really fascinating. I would have done the same thing! lol Your photos are outstanding as always! I did notice that the wire grating you were standing on by the water wheel... and what appears to be 'fresh' 4x4's supporting it looks like it could have been installed within the past year. Possibly when the 'DRY 92723' was scribed.

Its a old water treatment plant for a old mine or industrial plant, in somewhat working condition but very poorly maintained. The water wheel is to measure, or give a knowledge of something. The "shiny" pipe is stainless steel and can be however old, but my guess is that's from the 80's -90's .
