In a bizarre twist of fate, my boss now lives in the farmhouse where I grew up in the 60s and 70s and where my family farmed for generations. He keeps digging up all manner of things that take me back to my childhood and of which ive totally forgotten about. . Last thing was a painted pebble. The paint, probably lead based, was as fresh as it was 50 years ago. He's yet to find the old washer and cooker my grandpa buried in the field. And I'm not telling.

Steve's comment is correct, but it's usually possums, racoons, and ground hogs that chew on civil war bullets. The reason is the salt content. Most ground hogs die from eating too many small salted gravel left from winter road work than old age. Bite the bullet is actually from the Revolutionary War when muskets were first used. To load faster soldiers would bite the paper top tied with string, pour the powder, and ram the ball. There was chloroform and a stick wrapped in cloth used for pain during amputation. Another great video Brad, thanks for sharing.

Fantastic finds Brad! Sadly the woods where I played as a boy is a subdivision is now $350K and up homes. But worse the home i grew up in was smack in the middle of a Park that was started in the 1850's. I delivered newspapers seeing the remnants of paths, small bridges and other signs of playgrounds and gazebos! I wanted a metal detector in 1955!

When i was a kid, we moved to a new home and the first thing my brother and i did was go exploring in the woods. We explored the woods everyday and we found a cave next to a creek. It was really cool, it had a hole next to a tree that we could crawl thru and get inside. When you got inside it was wide open on one side and a creek ran along the edge. It was on the side of a huge hill and it was really hard to get to the big opening and much easier to just go thru the opening up top next to the tree. It was our spot until we moved a few years later amd my brother and i still talk about it now. I tried going back to that spot and i couldnt find it at all not even the creek. One day im gonna take my brother with me and find it again. We carved our names in the wall and probably left some camping gear behind. Super cool video, it just reminded me of somw of the cool spots my brother and i would find in the woods when we would walk all day ling exploring.

Also the E I dont think came from a John Deere tractor because most of them were painted and didn't have letters like that. That bullet is a Minnie ball for civil war rifle. Amunition came in premade paper cartridges with the bullet and the powder in the cartridge. The rifleman would bite off the bullet end of the cartridge, hold the bullet in his mouth, dump the powder down the barrel, shove the paper down the barrel to seal the c powder in, and ram the bullet down the barrel with the slightly hollow end down. When the rifle was fired the gas would cause the base of the bullet to expand just enough to seat in the rifle groves. Bite the bullet comes from when someone had to have surgery is the days before anesthesia. They needed to bite down on something soft to keep from breaking their teeth because of the pain.

We didn’t find our “carvings” on a tree outside like you did , but we returned (my sister and I) to a home we lived in in the late 50s and were invited in by the current owner. Oddly enough, the basement had not been finished and our family “growing post” was still there, exposed and undisturbed showing the heights and names of 5 of the 6 of us kids. It was so cool. I had flashbacks of running around the poles supporting the floor above.
