The piano was not in the original song. The piano player was a roadie (setting up equipment for their concerts), but was also a classically trained piano player. One day during a practice he added the piano on a couple of songs and they made him a band member.

Lynyrd Skynyrd first formed as a high school band in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, the original lineup consisting of Ronnie Van Zant (singer), Gary Rossington and Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Jungstrom (bass), and Bob Burns (drums). The name of the band was inspired by Leonard Skinner, a high school PE teacher they were not that fond of, interestingly enough Mr. Skinner himself was tickled pink when he found that out. The band got national attention around 71, going through a number of lineup changes, and was on the verge of true greatness in 77 when tragedy struck and the band was involved in a terrible plane crash that took the lives of Ronnie, guitarist Steve Gaines, and his sister backup singer Cassie Gaines. The band reunited in 87 with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant taking over as singer, and continue to this day. Sadly only one member of the lineup at this concert is still alive, drummer Artemis Pyle, and all the original members have passed away.

All those young faces you see in the crowd are now close to 70 years old. My...how time flies by. This was probably the last known instance of the confederate flag being flown in Oakland, Ca. A very different time. I've always believed that the long instrumental that ends the song is the sound of the bird finally flying free. Or more specifically - his spirit.

The correct story about Billy Powell ( as told by Gary Rossington ) is that : after a gig one night it was raining so bad they could not load out the equiptment. Billy saw a piano and said if I had to play Freebird this is how I would play it. He played the part as you hear it today. The band made him part time piano player part time roadie eventually moving him just to piano.

I was a few years too young to go to this show, but I went to two of these "Day onn the Green concerts"in the 80s at the Oakland Coliseum. What a great time...General admission shows for les than $30. I got to see Yngwie Malmsteen, Y&T, the original Metallica, Ratt l, & The Scorpions for less than $30. What a time!

The story was a band member and his girlfriend had a huge fight. She walked outside and he followed. She asked him, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" They made up and got married. Then that question became the inspiration for this song. Great reaction.

One helluva break-up song, eh? It's gentle and heartfelt in the first half, then you see what the 4 guitars do once the bird is set free! Love that you picked out the piano and its firm contribution to the song -- can hear it even through the loudest parts to the very end! The part I love best is when the bass player (Leon Wilkeson) cranks it up a notch and joins in near the end; plucks those thick bass strings so crisp-n-clean like they're regular guitar strings. All original members of LS have now passed on to the great stage in the sky (they all did not die in the plane crash that happened 3 months after this concert).

I was there! I am so happy this is on film because I don't remember a thing except that I loved going to these concerts at the Oakland Coliseum's Days on the Green. So many people and we all were just so chill listening to the music. And no, I smoked nothing, took nothing. But I was there!

The piano player was a part of the road crew until one day he sat down and started playing it on the piano after the show. And they over heard him. From then on he was part of the group.
