From my understanding in the Tanach, Jonah didn't want the Ninevites to repent because God's mercy would be upon them, reflecting badly on Israel who wouldn't listen to the warnings/prophets. The sailors were honorable men trying to row with safety to shore until it was too hard. They asked God for mercy when lifting him up seeing the sea was calmed, before throwing him in. Jonah then didn't see want to live to see the Israel's destruction once seeing the repentant Ninevah. He knew how awful it was going to be. The miracle of the fish was to show him God wanted to save his life, while plunging deep into the water he thought he barred from seeing dry land. This has nothing to do with Jesus in the tomb for 3 days - it was a 3 days journey to walk across the city. Jonah walked 1/3 of the way in & made his announcement. We are to repent & turn to God. Period. Listen to the warnings, no sign needed nor or we to hold out to telling others in fear they might do a better job repenting, receiving favor from God. Some believers tell others they're in too much sin to serve or be in a group - how much more is that withholding blessing's because of one's judgment? Let God be the One to calm the seas to work on one's heart ❤️
