The cowgirls are looking quite portly, lol. Great job working with the kiddos. Thats so good for them learning all these different skills. I raised my boys on a farm and there wasnt many skills they didnt learn. So rewarding. Good job Mom and Dad!

I really enjoy watching your videos while having my breakfast. And I listen to your podcasts while I'm cooking or cleaning. You always put out great content and yours and your family's personalities are so warm and friendly. Other KZbinrs sometimes make me feel like I'm watching celebrities which feels a little intimidating. Y'all have a way of making your viewers feel like we're part of your friends circle and we're just chitchatting. Thank you so much for being so open, humble, and personable. This is my number 1 favorite KZbin channel.

This video was really helpful! We have smaller livestock that we run through our pasture with movable electric netting but we just brought home our first calf that we will be using electric tape for. Lots of great tips you gave for me to think about as we move forward with our calf- thanks! And yes, hardworking farm kids are most certainly gems!

Awesome video! My husband and I bought a farm a few months ago and bought a small herd of Dexter cattle last month. We have been using Gallagher electric fencing and just made the 2nd move from winter pasture to spring grass. We have multiple types of posts and insulators for the different type of fencing already on the property. As we move them we are realizing that some areas would make sense to permanently cross fence but others will always be temporary. Cheers!

Tip...... buy a post driver.. drive a steel corner post first then gate posts... string wire.....Then infill with other posts.Have your gates close to your road access so you move sock, mobile water or shade with ease.

Yup unwinding wire that's tangled is time consuming and frustrating. Spools are best a think, at 40.00 each it's a time saver. If you dont have spool winders use a bucket and sort of coil it into bucket, when you pull it out do it kinda slow so you don't ball it up. Some shorter runs are good to have sectioning off pastures short of buying spools. En arche en ho logos

If you are going to use fiberglass posts; include a pair of gloves for everyone. In two or three years the the post will do what is called silvering and if you grab the post barehanded you will get a handful of fiberglass slivers. Best way to get the slivers out out is a soapy wash rag and time.

Are you going to hay some of this property? Is there someone you could share crop with? To run a hot wire over rock I set step in posts in 5 gallon buckets of sand. You can also use concrete in the buckets and make them permanent weighted posts if you have areas that you cannot drive posts into and will need to have fence over.

#askhomesteady how many acres due you recommend for a cow? Also how much hay do you go threw ? TIA
@SoilMatesofGeorgia5 жыл бұрын
KIM COUCH depends how much you plan to subsidize feed. General rule is one and a half acres per now. You can make that smaller if you have good soil and grass and forage. Also, even if you have one cow on 1 1/2 acres, you can do rotational grazing with it for healthier soil and grass.

#Askhomesteady Can we see your grazing plan on paper?
@funnyfarm55554 жыл бұрын
I just took a legal notepad and paced off my field, then converted the paces to feet and then just figured out the best way to put up the fence and irrigation (different spray heads go different distances and on the end one you want one that you can set the degree of radius). We have a county ordinance that says you are not allowed to let your irrigation water go onto county right of way. I made mine with individual grazing area with a center aisle way that I could also drive the tractor down.. i could also restrict them every now and then to just the aisle way. This is called rotational grazing and is really important if you have Horses. Water is automatic 100 Gal tub at barn with goldfish for mosquito control and the goldfish eat the algae.
