One I was hoping to see is: A1 dribbles across half court line and establishes front court team/player control. A1 trapped by B1 & B2 in front court. A2 is running towards front court. A1 passes to A2 as A2 jumps from back court is in the air catches the ball and lands in front court. Is this a back court violation?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
As described, this would be a back court violation by rule. The status of A2 was back court status. When they touched the ball they violated.

Hey Greg. I love your videos! I wanted to clarify your question regarding the player who dribbles from the backcourt, dibbles into the frontcourt while maintaining backcourt status but then retreats to the backcourt. Wouldn't this violate 9-9 Art 2? Didn't they make the ball go from the backcourt to the frontcourt and back to the backcourt with their team being the first to touch it in the backcourt?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Allen, Great question! The key to the answer is frontcourt status . The ball does not have frontcourt status until the dribbler has frontcourt status. The dribbler does not have frontcourt status until all three points are in the front Court . So you have a situation where the ball bounces in the frontcourt and yet the ball does not have the status of the frontcourt in this situation. Kind of funky but that's what it is.
@allenk7483
@allenk7483 3 жыл бұрын
@@BetterOfficials Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. That's why you say Article 2 is so funky. It mainly only applies when a pass is involved.

When you review 3 things for backcourt at approximately 8:30, need to add exception of ball touching court or official in front court and rebounding to back court. In those cases the ball obviously doesn't touch a player in front court.
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, not sure what your distinction is. Touching the court not a factor in the 'formula.' Clarify?

@@BetterOfficials , The play where passed from bc, hits official in fc, and returns to bc. Or passes with spin to fc and returns to bc. Never actually touches a player in fc. (Clear green split-pea soup?) Lol
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffgrzybowski5322 Yes. We have the throw-in exception, and then the Article 2 Super Duper exception. I'm keeping that separate as it is so rare.

Help me out. Team A has established team control in their front court. A5 passes to A1. A1 was trailing play in backcourt jumps, catches pass mid jump. Player A1 lands with both feet in the front court. Is that a violation?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
It is all about status. Team control on the court. Team A last to touch in frontcourt. When A1 touches the ball, what is the status of that player?

Question - is the division line in the front court or back court? Or neither?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 3 жыл бұрын
Rule 4 SECTION 13 COURT AREAS ART. 1 . . . A team’s frontcourt consists of that part of the court between its end line and the nearer edge of the division line, including its basket and the inbounds part of the backboard. ART. 2 . . . A team’s backcourt consists of the rest of the court, including the entire division line and the opponent’s basket and inbounds part of the opponent’s backboard.

This might sound like a dumb question let's say he touches the line with one foot is that over and back or is it the player whole body
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 жыл бұрын
A bit out of context as it relates to the rules. Status of a player is determined by where on the court they are touching, or, if airborne, where they LAST were in contact with the floor. An airborne player's body could be fully over the backcourt area, or an out of bounds area and yet their status not so much.

Hey y'all...I had a play that I think I got correct, but I can't find it in the rules book. Ball is in front court, then player passes to teammate jumping from backcourt to front court. Teammate catches the ball while in the air and lands in front court. Back court violation right? No? Where in the rule book can I find clarification on this one
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Coulson! That would be a backcourt violation by rule. The key to understanding this is understanding the rule for the violation itself which is RULE 9 - SECTION 9 BACKCOURT. In addition, we must as basketball officials be masters of status. What is the status of the player? What is the status of the ball? What determines that status? The answer is going to be found in RULE 4 - SECTION 4 BALL LOCATION, and RULE 4 - SECTION 35 PLAYER LOCATION.
