Thank you Sheena! The maintenance guy asked me what was up with the drain because it had rained and there was all that water on top. I explained that there was still duct tape on the drain (to protect it from concrete during the pour), and we still needed to come remove it. That was the money shot with us pulling the tape!

A wise man once said "all your labor is in the trench". I remember a job you did a while ago where you put in a French drain along a fence, but also had to get rid of a bunch more water from gutters and such - you dug one trench and put both pipes in it, perforated to catch the water coming in along the fence and solid for the gutters & basins, joining them into one solid pipe at the end of the French drain to flow to the outfall. That was eye-opening for me - putting two separate pipes for two separate purposes in the same trench. Brilliant.

I sure thing so. Some people think it's a waste of pipe and glue. I will continue keeping them separated. Sometimes I will send a gutter through a channel drain if the fall works out in my favor, but never through a french drain.

Definitely makes sense keeping them separated. You can have a significant amount of gutter water flow before you ever get ground water saturation to the point of using a French drain. You could legitimately probably flow about 3000 gallons of water on a standard ranch style three bedroom house that’s less than 1300 ft.² livable through gutter drains before a french drain activates. I’ve got both in my backyard

I agree with your feelings about keeping the channel and gutter separate are probably the better way to go. Yes, it's double the work and supplies, but if you get a heavy thunderstorm that drops a lot of water in a quick downpour you easily over power that channel drain with the gutter drainage alone. Then all the work you did is for nothing, and the customer is left disappointed as they still have the problem. Nice Job!

I dunno, 4" PVC pipe. If you have a thunderstorm pouring down that much rain, you are going to have massive flooding everywhere, the gutter coming down off the roof is already overflowing at that point to overwhelm a 4" PVC pipe. The volume and flow doesn't quite add up. Not for Noah's flood anyway.

I'm a retired contractor who retired at the "young" age of 53, so I think I know what I'm talking about when I say this. That is one of the best compliments any peer could have given you; I had the same thing said of me many, many times over the years. They don't even know it but they are actually saying, "I don't want to do the work to do the job correctly" or "I just want to do minimal work to half-ass a job and get paid". So you just tell them to keep saying those things about you.

Facts. Two previous owners ago, they piped the downspouts to a corrugated pipe into the flower beds next to the house. It was fine when they had tons of plants. The subsequent homeowners covered the area in gravel… not enough plants. So all the water was going to the foundation and leaking into the basement. We put extensions on the downspouts away from the house away from the beds next to the house and the water problems in the basement minimized.

Awesome. Check grading and remove the gravel around the house. The gravel lets the water soak in whereas soil lets the water run along the surface.

I'm fairly sure the french drain had a similar story, "There is a french drain" "ok where is the outfall" "uhh.. outfall?" Too many people think that a frenchdrain is a water percolating device or magically takes the water away, it isn't it's a collection device that still needs to send that water somewhere.

nice job,if you need water for cleaning ,can get a trailer or water bowser ,and a drum water ,then a hose and a pump,and jet wash paths ,can buy petrol water pumps ,with hose and just need a large drum water,maybe a ibc on back of your truck 1000 lt fork lift plastic container ,cheap too ,what i use here in england ,to wash dirt bikes ,after been on a moto-x track ,very muddy ,use ibc 1000lt container,and is on back of flat bed truck ,with petrol jet wash ,is cold wash ,but works nice ,and i have used your french drain and gutter system for wash erea ,works nice ,full bubble slope on concrete slab ,so water runs were i want it too,then move it some were else,powerd by gravity ,i love how you go back to the job and its raining and you get excited when water flows nice ,i do the same ,simple tech but works great ,was on a job once and they were fitting a walk in shower room ,i ask straght away,is it down hill to the drain hole ,not flat or up hill,they look at me bit funny and i say,water flows down hill ,for free ,got be half to full bubble or you got a problem ,make a big puddle ,they ask how i know this ,and i said i had a good teacher ,you and your vids ,keep up the good work ,spread the knowdlegde ,doing good things ,educate the world ,help others ,solve problems

That makes a lot of sense when there isn’t much fall to keep the gutter water separate from the Channel drain. The velocity of water coming down the gutter could quickly overwhelm the channel drain. Specially on a apartment complex those have large roofs and displace a lot of water ! I like how your concrete guys always put up splatter risk avoidance plastic. Great work as always Shawn!

5:35 Sounds like someone was attempting to build a soakaway. They're a fairly common feature in the UK. Will be especially going forward with our push for Sustainable Urban Drainage System (ie get it into the ground as near to the source as possible and don't just pipe it downhill to a river and cause flooding). Built properly they work perfectly fine, but you need the right soil and it needs the right capacity to cope with expected rainfall.

To use the runoff water at the end, couldn't the complex put some plantings, like a flowerbed, that would use up most of the excess water, so it don't end up making a mess with erosion.. We had a area like that on our property, and we put a large flowerbed, now there is no erosion at all and the plants love it..

Usually it's tougher to mow around more obstacles and also more labor to upkeep the flower beds at a bigger complex. They typically don't want to spend the money. I believe the grass will hold once established, especially if the correct type of grass is used.

Good job, as always. I have had a drain discharge similar to this one, except mine was beside a driveway and quickly got broken by a car tire. Went back and encased the end in concrete with a 2 ft by 3 ft pad and all has been good since. I am thinking that this drain discharge might have been better with something similar. Or at least mixing some gravel with the soil at the discharge point. Otherwise, erosion might be a problem. With this being an apartment complex, the pipe could become a trip hazard.

I'm in central Iowa and just ran into a new development where they are running all gutters in corrugated pipe then into a culvert. They have minimal fall and all 4 gutters into 1 4" pipe with multiple y fittings. Slab on grade foundations. Watching them install it won't be long before they have water problems. Something like 40 new build homes done the same way.

I do understand that many of these developers actually make a new business for the project then dissolve the company after the work is completed so they don't have to face these troubles. on paper your point is fair but that is a very dehumanizing way to be as a person.

I’d suggest you put a couple sheets of plywood against the glass sliding doors to protect them. I noticed you didn’t do that in another of your videos. That’s taking quite a chance of breaking the glass doors.

17:34 Isn't that much dirt against that brick holding water going to destroy that over time? Here were I live the dirt level has to be a minimum of 6" below the level of the 1st course of bricks on the concrete foundation. So you have to have at least 6" of foundation exposed on any wall. Not with the Clay content of the dirt, as mentioned high clay content is a natural deterrent of water, like what is used on Pond Dams, water cannot go through it. Watch any of Chris's videos at Letsdig18 for reference.

there are instances where you can only manage storm runoff onsite, some properties don't allow to daylight roof gutters etc. what would be the issue with gutters running into a leech line/dry well? similar to a septic system. many times if you don't manage storm runoff onsite you just send water to the neighbors, which isn't ideal either. some counties/new build requirements also want onsite storm water management

Ive watched damn near every single one of your videos, and it got me curious have you ever had to or would you ever in a situation identical to this, pour the concrete so it directs flow into a sump pump then redirect the water up the hill into a drain near the parking lot? I guess idk if there was even a drain close enough that made sense. Great video, great work.

He might do that if the concrete pad was at the bottom of a bowl and there literately was nowhere for the water to go making the sump pit the only option to get rid of the water... The problem with a sump pit & pump is 1) the use electricity which costs the homeowner money, 2) require maintenance and 3) don't work if the power fails which it can in a bad thunderstorm when you REALLY need it...

I'd say the downstairs wall with the cut out for inspection needs to be dealt with. Probably remove all the drywall. Also where did the water go? Under a furred up floor. Studs need to be replaced. Good as ususal xcept you're slipping, the channel drain was crooked.

Another excellent video. Which sealant you use to connect sch 40 pvc pipes together? Is it Oatey rain-r-shine or any Oatey regular sealant/cement would be okay under concrete and for drainage pvc pipes? Also, do you recommend any sealant to cap the sprinkler head for under the concrete? Or can still use pvc sealant cement for capping out sprinkler heads under concrete?
