Someone commented suggesting shortening the videos, and I get what he's saying, but I can really appreciate how thorough and detailed this is. I've had a naked bathroom ceiling for 2 years or more. I had scraped the plaster, it was a nightmare.👎I did a very mediocre job. Some of my ceiling issues are things you covered. I've spent the last few months mulling it over. I was going to texture wallpaper the ceiling, but now I think I'll paint. I'm rather new to home improvements, and I know nothing. Your video really helped me. I'm going to start on it in the morning. Thanks. 🙂

I started at 18 years old doing drywall I've been doing it for many many years I've also plaster work as well. Most people think it's crazy but I just absolutely love it. I love design patterns I've got a Tuscany pattern I've got a fresco finish I'm slick finish in my house and I love to help people. Not for free usually sometimes😊 Only do whatever I have to do here at my house but I feel like I'm going to start a KZbin channel just to show people all of the beautiful patterns I love the lace patterns as well it's just absolutely beautiful. And you can actually make figures of horses which I love of course I never met a animal I didn't love❤ And I love doing so finishes with the paint on top of the Fresco finish or the Tuscany southwestern finish all you do is paint a light color satin paint on it nothing really shiny and then you go over with a darker color and you have two buckets of 5 gallon buckets I'm sorry of water clean water dirty water you wipe it down first the dirty water which is actually clean to start with and then you close the clean water it's beautiful also leathering I love it Happy finishing 😊

For people saying that this video is too long I will say this is exactly what I was looking for. everybody else was just showing how to take the popcorn off which is not hard and there's a plethora of videos that show you to wet it down and scrape it. If you have any experience with construction you will see as soon as you scrape it down you'll realize, you have some work to do if you wanted to look professional.

BAD NEWS- Hey everyone, as of 9/21/20 we have some bad news. We are suddenly being kicked out of our rental due to the sale of the home, (we were planning on buying next summer) and I'm having some tough medical issues such as Prostate Cancer, Permanent Vertigo, Restless Legs, Neuropathy (nerve damage) etc. So we put out a video explaining this and many of you asked us to create a Gofundme so you could say thanks for all the help I've given you on these videos, my comments, etc. I really hesitated, as I hate asking for donations, but then you said it wasn't a donation, it was a way for you to say thanks. So if you want to know more here's the video explaining what all has been going on (moved 9 times in 12 years, my wifes 3 knee replacements, my cancer, $7,000 dental Bill and much more). kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4OwqH6VgbmEh9U You can also just read about it on the gofundme page at: gf.me/u/yzzrkz NOTE: please don't contribute if it puts any strain on you at all, and there is zero expectations, or anything like that. But if you'd like to give back, Thank you.

We always had to put three coats of joint compound or mud the screws before we ever sprayed the ceiling we just didn't have to pull the the top angle take but it was usually always a good idea to bed back that top angles height. Another thing to be careful of is to make sure that nobody has put any oil-based paint on it I have used a orchard sprayer I'm just mist the ceilings. Sometimes some of the texture stays up there without the actual vermiculite AKA popcorn being up there. I have had people to tell me they like that. You have a lot of good points thank you 👍 helping you and yours have a very blessed day 🙏😊👍

That’s something a fair amount of Drywaller‘s don’t seem to understand, is that there is many many variations of hand textures. I’ve been criticized for the way I do it telling me that it’s not how a skip trowel is done, LOL. And I made up my own texture because I like it that way as do my customers. I took a weeklong faux finishing class years ago and learned how to do venetian plaster‘s, Ovilla plaster’s, and many other cool techniques that I plan on doing videos about one of these days. I thought you might mention something about the possibility of asbestos, especially with ceilings done in the 1970s.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
I have mentioned the asbestos thing in other videos but I might have forgot here. So here it is. Some of the houses with popcorn ceiling texture have asbestos in it, but not all. And only up till around 1980 although it can go into 81 or 82 because they were allowed to use up their existing stock. So on older houses we always have it tested or we won’t work on it. Here in Colorado, homeowners can still remove the popcorn texture even if it has asbestos. Contractors cannot unless they are licensed to which is why we leave it alone. Everyone should check in their area to see what the laws are and be extra careful if you do choose to remove it with asbestos in it. I would do a lot of research on how to do it properly.
@bermudezeg5 жыл бұрын
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement is there a special way to remove it or is it identical. I know ir it has asbestos you have to wear PPE. But is there any thing more to it.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
As a contractor I'm not allowed to remove I it so I haven't. But basically you are supposed to protect all surfaces from the asbestos debris, minimize dust like with water, wear full body safety gear, high quality masks, bag it really well, usually double bagged, HEPA air cleaner etc. That's why it's so expensive to remove professionally. That's just what I know about it and not legal advice.
@bermudezeg5 жыл бұрын
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement makes sense but idk why contractors can’t do it. It’s like any other chemical.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
@@bermudezeg Because it's a very dangerous substance, not a chemical actually. And if handled wrong it's very dangerous for the homeowner after you leave, as well as yourself and employees, so it requires special equipment and handling, which requires licensing to ensure it's done safely.

I got pretty lucky with the job I'm on now. It's a custom built home that the current owner wants the popcorn removed and painted. With it being a custom home the drywall finishers did a better job on the ceilings, I've just had to spot nails and run the angles. The flats and butt joints are ran pretty well and just had to do some light feathering of the edges in places. All five of the rooms I have done have turned out beautiful!
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
Nice. Before my vertigo hit me so bad, I was preferential to doing a skip trowel and the way I do it I could bury the angles and never had to coat them. Now I just don’t do them because it’s too much for me. Sounds like you got a nice job to do there. Thanks for the post.

Tried to fix some joints on a wall last year, but didn't know exactly how to do it properly...it looks terrible and needs to be re-done. So, if we get a chance to correct the mistake this year we will. In addition, we have these popcorn ceilings that collect all sorts of dust and cobwebs. Doesn't matter how many times we carefully try to vacuum, they still look dirty and the cobwebs always seem to come back within a month (yes, we bug bomb too). So, that might actually be the project for this summer. Anyhow, thanks for posting, videos like this really help with the planning of these projects and know that it's not just a mater of scraping it off, but there will probably be a lot of repairs to do as well before we can even think about new texture and paint.

@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
Just realize that I do have a video on the skim coating and I’m going to be putting out more, but skim coating won’t fix half of the things in this video. Your best bet is to fix items individually and then skim coat if you just want a smooth ceiling. Watch some of my other videos on repairing cracks on the ceiling and such for advice on repairing the other items. All I do is go through and recoat all of the nails or screws, which I have a video on that too, and then tape and finish all of the cracked joints like in my ceiling repair video, and then sand those smooth and apply a texture, or skim coat to leave it smooth.
@thegretnaexperiment2.0215 жыл бұрын
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement got it! KZbin University has me covered! 💗Starting in the closet and upstairs bedrooms and moving my way downstairs where more people will notice any imperfections in the ceiling. Skim coating for a smooth ceiling. Some of the texture is already peeling off from the roof leak so hopefully, it won’t be too stubborn! BTW: the professionals are fixing that part of the ceiling.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
I will have to do a video review on this item. I've tried a home made version and went back to my usual method, partly for speed and I also felt it was clogging my vacuum hose with wet, sticky mud crud requiring washing out the hose and the inside of the vacuum, since you are scraping off wet sticky popcorn texture which is carried by a mud. I think I'll stick to the fast method. You can just wear shoe booties and take them off when walking out, and let it dry overnight, then sweep it up. It's not really that bad if you do it this way. So I'll plan on buying this one day and see if it's worth it for homeowners.

In my travels as a handyman business owner I see a lot of shitty looking ceilings that the homeowner have had scrapped and then textured. The texture is usually too thin and the ceiling was never floated out after it was scrapped.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
I hear you. There’s too many people advertising that they know how to do this, but they don’t understand how to do it right. After scraping, all of the joints usually need refinished, and if they do that right, then you can get by with a thin texture. But they often skip that step and go straight to texture and it usually looks pretty bad. I appreciate all your comments, thanks. Guy

All good points, with one exception; don't ever use caulk to repair a bad, broken, or completely separated paper tape corner joint. That is a cheap cheat maneuver that you will regret when trying to fix again after the caulk dries, separates, and/or recedes back into the void. Just go ahead and retape the joint and float it back out as necessary. Do it once. Do it right. And You'll thank yourself later.

Meeh, your just scaring folks out there , I’ve done a bedroom , living and dinning room , wet sprayed the popcorn, nicks are expected but what is it that Home Depot doesn’t carry that it can’t fix with its products? So phase one is scrapping the whole ceiling , next phase is mudding Aka patching any areas that have any little holes or nicks it’s like putting butter , so that’s phase 2 , of course I let the mud dry out , Now phase 3 which is the messy part but if done with love and care it will turn out perfect , sanding the whole ceiling with an electric sander , i got a perfect smooth finish it looked great even before I painted it ! After sanding it you want to remove all that dust so either get a broom and simple broom 🧹 the ceiling ! All of it , or a wet rag and basically clean the ceiling so there’s any dust particles left on the ceiling that would prevent the primer or paint from sticking on it . When the dusting is done move on to phase 4 and prime the whole ceiling with a roller not a brush and I used the killz2 brand it covered the ceiling perfectly , at least couple of coats , let it sit for a day before you paint and if you see there are spots the needs a touch up primer now is the time , moving on to phase 5 is painting with a good flat paint I used glidden flat white , you don’t want any sheen on there ... it may sound difficult but take your time with it and don’t skip anything for a nice look and always wear a mask 😷, and always cover your working area . good luck and thanks for sharing your video still

I'm not trying to scare anyone, just be honest, and the honest truth is you should NEVER just scrape a ceiling and then paint it. I've removed 100s of popcorn ceilings so I've seen it all. I've seen texture under the popcorn, serious damage, mold, and much more. I've seen MANY where they just scraped and painted, and it looks very bad. I get tagged on the question all the time on fb when someone is looking for a contractor to remove it and every time someone will tell them to do it yourself, just scrape it and paint it, it's not that hard. PLUS, every ceiling is different. This was one of the worst scenarios but ALL of them need some work. Most of the time I recoat every joint as they need it, sometimes just some, sometimes just a few repairs. So the point here is to not just scrape and paint. You need to sand it, dust it, fix it, sand some more, dust it, texture is you want then prime and paint. Thanks for the input.

@@ByGraceIGo i’ve removed over 500 popcorn ceilings and not once have I been able to scrape it, and just paint it. Yes you could do that, and yes I leave very few nicks and dings but that’s not what this video is pointing out. I also sprayed many popcorn ceilings in the 70s and I know we could take shortcuts because it hid stuff so well, which means that if you just scrape it off those shortcuts will I’ll be visible. I’ve only done this since 1977 so I’m pretty sure I know what I’m talking about.But do it however you want I just know it looks like crap to most of us if you simply scrape it and paint it and it will hurt the value of your home when you resell it. If asbestos is so extremely dangerous how can this guy been inhaling it for so many years and be healthy. God bless him.
@CRBAnalyseServiceGmbH Жыл бұрын
Hi Evelyn, that is a good question! Because increased contact with the mineral fibre asbestos can trigger the lung disease asbestosis. One of the problems is the long latency period of asbestosis. This means that inhalation of the fibres may have occurred a long time ago and yet asbestosis develops unnoticed. This insidious process is treacherous. That is why regular checks are recommended for all those who have been or are currently exposed to asbestos. Stay healthy!

My house in NH was built in the 70s and sprayed with that older vermiculite and likely asbestos stuff. Popcorn was also painted 2x by me. I've gotten to be an ACE at wet scraping these down to the chalk lines. I touch up with mud, prime, re-mud where necessary paint and my ceilings look brand new. It is easier to just tear it all out? Maybe but with 8' ceilings I can only do so much on a 2 step ladder. Thus, I'll continue to scrape em all.

Hello Chris Augusta. I would NEVER tear one out, as there's MUCH simpler and cheaper ways to do it, like the wet scraping, dry scraping or even skim coating. Tear outs would also require new insulaiton, wall repairs, and much more. Thanks for commenting. Guy 😎👣

When I bought a house with two rooms of popcorns ceiling instead of scraping it off The contractor suggested putting up new thin drywall on top of it. Basically putting a veneer over it. It is perfect. After living here 7 years now it's still flawless
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
Mars, we have done quite a few that way as well. I usually only suggest that if the ceiling has been painted too many times or if there is the possibility of asbestos. We usually charge about 30% more to put new sheet rock up. But I’m glad you pointed that out, as it is a viable option.
@Zeknix4 жыл бұрын
I did that in a small closet. I had scrapped off the popcorn in all the rooms but I did not want to go through the scrapping and having all that popcorn rain down on my head. Also all the ceiling corners had completely deteriorated. So I just put up another piece of 1/2 inch drywall and tapped all the corners. Can't even tell the ceiling is 5/8" to 3/4" lower in the closet compared to the room.

Hey brother, i got a question off topic from the video. But wanted to see if you knew the answer from your experience. What is the best tool for the job in cutting metal? I have an angle grinder, jigsaw with metal blade, and sawzall with a metal blade. I also see things like those hand held bandsaw for cutting metal. Let's say for example, cutting angle iron... Which tool would be safest and fastest?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I actually have decent experience in that. I've used the horizontal bandsaws, grinders with cutoff wheel, etc, but my favorite especially for angle iron is this Dewalt Metal Chopsaw. I own this as I wrote a book about Biodiesel Called Do it Yourself Guide to Biodiesel which is on Amazon, and I manufactured the equipment for 6 years and often needed to cut heavy metal. So I bought this saw - amzn.to/2MYXNTq and it works great. No sparks, clean cuts and plenty of power. BUT, don't rush it, which I've seen some people do. It cuts quite fast, but it's not a wood chopsaw, even though they look the same. And you can lock the metal in the built in clamp, so it's safe. I cut a lot with it and never had a problem. Hope that helps, and be sure to click that link, then if you decide to get it, within 24 hours of clicking the link, we'll make a little, and you pay the same as normal. Or, put it in your cart, pay up to 90 days later, and we earn a little. Thanks, Guy
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks5 жыл бұрын
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY ah! Got it. Hope i dont take too much of your time with these questions, but which tools will do the closest in performance to that chop saw? Just so i can understand the ranking system of metal cutting tools.... I assume by what you said, the metal chop saw is best for metal cutting, and then i assume a metal cutting hand bandsaw would be 2nd in line? Then the angle grinder... Then the recip saw, and lastly being the jigsaw?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
Not sure I could rank them, other than the chopsaw being the best for heavier materials. There's also the abrasive chopsaw like this one- amzn.to/2WSJeWk which is more affordable, but shoots sparks everywhere, so lots of grinding debris, and more burrs. And I haven't used a handheld bandsaw, but they should work well for material clamped down while cutting. I'd saw next would be a recip saw with a bi-metal blade, then a jigsaw for medium thin, but rigid material, and then the angle grinder.

@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
I’m going to do a video about caulking angles that will likely stir up a lot of controversy among drywaller‘s. I first used this when I did some overlay sheet rock over popcorn ceilings and didn’t want to mess up the walls. So I hung it tight enough that I could put two beads of caulking on it and I have been back to jobs years later and they were fine. We think we have to tape everything because we do that on new construction because it’s faster.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
I think I’ve got pictures of one that I did one time that had a gap over a half inch wide and I knew that if I re taped it and it expanded or contracted again it would just bust out the mud so I put super stretch caulking in it and several years later I was back on that job and it still looked great.
@kellykirk41513 жыл бұрын
For finding rough mud. Use a light next to the wall. Go clockwise and counter clockwise it will show high and low spots. A taper that does multi million dollar houses should me that. I'm sure you get this all the time but what do you charge per square foot to do this the right way

Varies depending on how much it's been painted, how high the ceiling is, how much furniture will be left in the rooms, what type of texture they want, etc. Roughly $2-$3/sq ft

It’s great information but I will suggest to start by just removing carefully a little piece and send it to a lab. Most if not all popcorn ceiling from the 89s or before has asbestos which inhaled can cause cancer so you will need a professional company with special equipment to remove it . Don’t risk your health

Actually they banned it in the early 70s and they quit using it in the early 80s

At what point do you caulk the edge where the wall meets the ceiling if you feel the tape has been cut? Before skim coating the ceiling or after?
