It actually does help deflect noise a bit when you have a space that's open with a lot of hard surfaces . I live in an old house With laugh and plaster walls and hardwood floors . The reason that a lot of this was put in was to catch the echoes and bouncing sound and it actually works a little bit … In the main open part of the house where you'd think you would echo more the living room and dining room have this ceiling but the bedroom never had it done. .. When I was moving in the bedrooms That didn't have it definitely echoed sound out of them much more than the rooms that did have it

Hi there, My husband died last year, and I have lots of tubes of caulk, but it is all silicone for kitchen and bathroom. I won't be ready to paint for a least a week. Can I use this instead of quick dry to put an edge between the ceiling and wall? Also, could you tell me which Caulk has the high gloss finish for around sinks and tubs? The ones my hubby bought have a dull finish. Thanks so much

We bought a smoker's house that had popcorn ceilings, with some dirt and tar buildup. With no way to clean it and needing it move-in ready in a matter of days, we used a 3/4 inch nappy roller, kilz and then paint, gave it 2 coats over in different directions, and it still looks great 4 years later.

I stood on a portable aluminum ladder, used a medium roller, and painted it like I would any other ceiling, using and overlapping crisscross pattern. No problems, turned out beautifully. Most people can't paint a ceiling steadily from the floor, unless it's 7.5 feet or lower. My ceilings are slightly over 8 feet tall. That said, it's easier for a homeowner, who isn't a professional painter doing it everyday, to use a ladder. At least, that's my experience, having remodelled 3 homes during my lifetime.

I wanted to share a roller tip I use. When painting the ceiling, start rolling about 12-18 inches away from wall. Area you start usually has the most paint, and you can go back over that spot to even it out if needed
@HomeRenoVisionDIY2 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea!
@dean3583 Жыл бұрын
If you damp the roller ( soak in water and wrap it with your fingers the ok sign and run it across to drain out as much water as possible) your paint edges are smooth and flowing. It gets few minutes slower to dry and that’s great to overlap edges without seeing streak lines. I did that on my ceiling with just one coat, no visible streak lines. This is how fine artists do on canvas.

Great Video Jeff! I use those foam roller 20 years ago! Never like them. The loose stipple eventually fill the roller after a while. Paint pick up is less having to go to the tray more often. I prefer a 20 to 25 mil sleeve. Holds tons of paint. I just finished 2 bedroom ceilings today! Rooms 12x20 rolled one half then the other half. I agree, I only use FLAT paint for my ceilings! Cheers! Hire out asbestos removal. Get professional help and stay safe. We did our popcorn ceilings (1300 sqft home). If it’s never been painted you can just spray with water and scape it off. If it’s painted like ours was, we had to dry scrape first. This cut away many of the low points allowing water to penetrate the actual texture material. Than spray with water and scrape it free. A light orange peel texture after to hide any imperfections and it’s “perfect every time.”
@billm.82202 жыл бұрын
Take a small sample & have it analyzed for asbestos. Found out mine is a level 1. No big deal. Some are worse. If yours is worse, have it removed by the pros. A lot safer that way.

Best roller tip for ceilings in my opinion is ditching the cage 9" roller. Go to a double-ended 12" or 18" with a 15mm knap for semi-smooth surfaces. I've painted numerous textured ceilings in BC, Canada with no problems and its incredibly fast because of the doubled surface area coverage per roll
@jamesbresnahan61284 ай бұрын
bag the entire room, all the walls at the ceiling line, with 99" plastic, and spray the entire ceiling with flat, use an airless sprayer. I found this so much easier, and you avoid any problems that could occur when you apply the paint with a sleeve and a brush. You also avoid any lap marks or lines by spraying instead of rolling it

As a professional I refuse to do them. Almost every time I get large patches that become detached from the surface and goop up the roller as well as fall to the floor. The loose areas are probably already to drop and waiting to get a bit wet to make a mess. I have sprayed them before with perfect results but just find it easier to move on to another job.

I repaired the popcorn ceiling in my spare bedroom. I used a roller and Dunn Edward's primer and it actually matched the original color of the ceiling! Yes, it took about 3 gallons of primer to finish off the room. On a separate note, a roofing contractor put his foot through my other bedroom ceiling (condo) so they hired another contractor to repair the hole in the ceiling and painted it. He used a spray gun and it turned out krappy, but better than what was there before. My father was a painter and I learned from him not to use a spray gun if you can help it.

I hate those "popcorn" ceilings. Our house came with it, and for years we dealt with it with cobwebs in the texture, dirt, dust, and raining down the "popcorn" crap. Finally was able to start a remodel and paint job to our rooms, and started to paint it with a roller, didn't like how it was looking with the "popcorn' still there, and decided to remove it. I took a simple 14 inch sheetrock blade that screwed to an extension, a spray bottle of water, and sprayed lightly, scraped, and took the junk off. A little Kilz primer, then flat white paint. Goodbye crap "popcorn".

How flat was the ceiling once you were done? Contemplating doing the same but I’m worried about making it look straight.
@TimfromAlabama Жыл бұрын
@@monicaolaru5228 Removing the popcorn stuff wasn't too hard but a messy thing. A little spritz of water mist, wait a few seconds or so, scrape it off with a knife. Once you do it you can smooth it out by sanding it. I wouldn't say it leaves it too straight or flat but it's better than popcorn junk. You'd need to let it dry for a couple days or so before sanding or doing anything else to make sure it's dried out well. You can look around to see if you got all the popcorn stuff and here you can even do detailed sanding for smoothness or leave it rough, maybe even splatter a little sheetrock mud here and there and smear it around if you want a little more less smooth...lol. Once you remove it and let it dry you can see what feels good for you. Just be ready to get dirty, floors dirty, and feel like you've been in a popcorn popper yourself...lol. Good luck.

There is a danger to painting popcorn ceilings. Years ago, I painted them until one day i found the entire dining room ceiling hanging down in large strips. I painted, like usual, but a day or 2 later it was catastrophe! Now if you hate popcorn ceilings why then it can be a cheap way to remove popcorn ceilings! With the Internet now a thing, I learned that if you put too much latex on, the ceiling gets too wet and dissolves the bond between the texture and the drywall. There is a primer you can use to negate this I have just learned. Learned because it is time once again to face those ceilings.
