My father was in army and we were stationed at Gangtok,we got the chance to visit nathula border from school when I was in 6th class around year 2006.our teacher got fainted too because lack of oxygen at height but the cold was damn chilling.If I get a chance I will definitely visit again.Sikkim is so beautiful.

Nathoe la means pass within hearing distance. It is a major trade route between India and Tibet before 1950 when Tibet was independent. Most traders, pilgrims and students used Nathoe La. Tibetan refugees believed that we will use this route to return to Tibet once we get independence. In early years of exile even the Dalai Lama used to tease Tibetans not to drink alcohol and be healthy as we have to climb the Nathoela to return to Tibet.

I was in Nathula Pass last in 2005 December, and luckily the number of people were not that many then. India side was very festive, and China side was very somber. Chinese soldiers were wearing grey camo and standing like statues. I remember the Indian Jawan telling us that Chinese army used to play mind games with Indian army, for eg. early morning Indian soldiers would see 30-40 Chinese soldiers standing like statues, and then our army used to raise the alarm, and then the Chinese soldiers use to disappear.
