have you signed exclusive contracts that didnt offer an upfront fee for being exclusive with them? if not, would you consider it to get the ball rolling with that library?

Yep - some Exclusive Libraries do and some don't offer those up-front fees. While they are great to get, they pale in comparison to the backend royalties I've received in my career (less than 5% of my income).

Yo Jesse, first off great video had a few questions for you. Totally open to signing over publishing if its a good library (current i have my own), but i keep hearing you are basically signing over your copyright to the song itself. Is this misinformation? how exactly does it work so they publisher doesnt own the songwriter copyright itself. In addition, you mention that your songs are in 5-6 libraries over the years- are these the same songs or are they different ones..Just thinking it would be a mess trying to sort out the publishing share between multiple libraries. Appreciate any insight

Welcome to the channel and good questions! 1) Yes many Libraries will require that you sign over the CR of your tracks that they accept from you to allow them more freedom to get you as many placements as possible.. 2) Different songs are distributed by different exclusive Libraries. Hope this helps!

What if you sign over your publishing and they never get you a placement? How do you get it back if they are not performing?

Ask for a reversion clause in your agreement that states that any tracks that don't see any placements in 2-3 years can be taken back out of their catalogue.

How about if they say 50/50 on publishing then they ask for 100% of copyrights. That doesn't sound right to me,why give up any copyrights?

Same question: What are your copyrights doing for you right now? Are you making money with them or have a plan to? Then don't sign them over. If not, why are you holding onto them?

A Library will still ask you to sign over a portion or all of your publishing interests.

Just to reiterate. Once you sign over your publishing rights and your song(s) get placed, even if you personally really like your music for your own project, you can't do anything else with that music on your own, correct? Also, if the library is saying you can submit your music via soundcloud or bandcamp, once they accept you into their library, do you have to then take your music off soundcloud or bandcamp?

Correct. And yes it's usually a great policy to take down any tracks that the Library accepts from you (exclusively).

You need to get educated about the standards within the business. Usually a 50/50 split with the Library is the standard deal, but there are variations to this and sometimes it's to your advantage to accept different terms.

But of course, we keep 100% Writers right. They shouldn't touch that at all. Because I heard somewhere some libraries want to take some of the writers share as well. But that definitely sounds bogus though.

Correct, if you're the sole composer you should be keeping 100% of your writer's share.

Yes, you can use the Submission Templates to submit to the Libraries I recommend in Sync Edge. Only members learn the identities of those Libraries.

This sounds like a promo for music libraries. You show a lot of sympathy for the hard working people in the library's but fail to mention the hard work that goes into creating the music. Stop this propaganda. Every journey is different. Don't tell creative ppl to give away 100% of anything. That I consider to be bad advice. Work your deals. You do have leverage. This is bad advice .

You must be new to the channel so I'll forgive your ignorance. I've been working hard creating the music for Libraries for 14 years - I mention the hard work quite a bit in my videos (not to mention I've lived it). And you should watch the video again because I'm not telling people they SHOULD do anything. I'm just explaining why holding onto rigid rules regarding publishing can prevent many producers from earning significant income. But you do you - don't sign over ANYTHING you don't want to 👍
