The Japanese Sun "with Rays" flag is the Naval Ensign (re-adopted by the JMSDF around 1972). It's associated with WWII Japan so much because most of the bases and a lot of the troops were Navy (or Special Naval Landing Forces). You don't see it in Burma photos and rarely in Chinese ones.
