can we instead have a video on the 70/80+ year old cleaner/security guard auntie and uncles? maybe shed some light into whether they are also doing it to keep themselves physically and mentally active, or because they have to work menial jobs in order to support themselves financially

@@NorAishah-y8m but in Malaysia many already retired at 56 even though the retirement age already been extended but people are reluctant to work after 56. I have 2 friends one working in the bank retired at 56 and passed away at 59, the other school mate retired at 56 and suffering stroke at 58. When most of them choose to retire at 56 and form a group to go for holidays, after awhile they have different opinions and conflicts among themselves, the group broke up and exit the group. Everyone came from different family backgrounds and we can’t expect everyone to understand you or your problems that you are facing, we can’t blame friends who are unable to keep you in company every day, be realistic be yourself. I have been working since 1980 and managing 4 companies of my own and I don’t like to spend times gossiping or talking about family problems to others and I spend most of my time in study new things to self improve to face the challenges in my career, this is the way of life I want and do things that can help and give opportunities to people who are willing to work together with you as a team.

These could be isolated cases whom are blessed with good health and possibly do not have family commitments. Generally, most seniors have some medical conditions or otherwise that do not allow them to continue working. Another thing is that those self employed are in a better position to do so. Lastly which company can employ those above 70 or 80? I was unfortunately retrenched at 55 and was unable to get a similar job after sending more than 50 job applications with frustration and depression during that time and I felt miserable cos my savings have to be used prematurely. So may good health be with those working seniors and enjoy your work

When you can’t get a job just prove that you have no market value!😝 My company just employed a 70 yo accountant to help us with IT auditing. A colleague was retrenched. She took the pain to do a diploma to become a childcare teacher. She is 75 now and still working in the same industry. My uncle retired at 67 but a few vendors he worked with before kept approaching him to offer him jobs. At 69, he took up one of the offers cos the remuneration was too good.

No market value? You are absolutely wrong! I was headhunted and have a track record but the situation back then are altogether different! Don’t jump into conclusion.Your view is narrow and skewed😝. You are totally arrogant to conclude a person have no market value when you don’t even know the situation and the industry well enough. How can you be a good employer with such a mindset? It takes the Govt to rolled out all these schemes and even have to encourage and entice employers to employ older workers but definitely not during the time when I was retrenched! Perhaps you have learnt much from the Govt and it is indeed effective. All thanks to the Govt for doing right! Btw, your company can only employ a few and we are talking about the general workforce. Fyi, I do employ staff for my Dept too and I don’t discredit a person like you do.

Here in the Philippines. This reminds me of my father a Chemical Engineer retired at his job in the government at the age of 63yo with all the retirement benefits that can support him for the rest of his retirement life. But even so he was not comfortable just sitting around at home instead he met his businessman friend and decided to put up a private mineral processing plant company. He enjoyed working on it since he was developing new ways in processing minerals and even often times invited me to join him going to other places to look at other mineral rich areas of the country. We both consider it our vacation together since we also have time to rest on many resorts before going home. He died at the age of 72yo due to a heart attack while on vacation from work while visiting his family home in the province.

In this platform, anybody can imagine who & what they are. However, it is difficult to conceal the truth of their real life from the contents of their posts. It is human nature to keep talking about unhappy things & situations that they are in, their choice of words and topics shown the mentality that they develop from experiences. That’s why there are people who think that saying that they are rich is the only way to hold their dignity, money is the only motivation to work, etc etc!😝

@@anglo-saxonconnor817your logic is very silly especially when you said in SG context. Nobody can force you to work and you can resign or retire tomorrow. But what if you want to continue? Retirement age means your company can be sack you legally. Raising retirement age is actually the government’s protection for workers as we all live longer and remain active longer. However if you are referring to countries like Taiwan or China where workers have retirement pensions then you have a valid point. So you scored your own goal 😂

Hmm..I'd say make the best of what life has to offer. My mother only had a secondary school education and she didn't do well for her o levels. Before she had children, she worked as a clerk. After she had my brother and I, because my father is a deadbeat, she had to become the breadwinner of the family so she went out to work. She found a job as a preschool teacher in a childcare centre. She worked hard and was sent for preschool education courses and gradually got promoted from teacher to senior teacher then to principal. To further her career, she switched from private childcare to PCF and from principal, she was promoted to administrator (in charge of a few PCF centres), then she went to PCF HQ and she's a head of a department now. She did her diploma, bachelors degree, masters degree in early childhood education while working, fully sponsored by PCF. My mother has been working in early childhood education for over 30 years now. She is around 70 years old now and is still working there because that's her passion. From looking at my mother's life, I feel like there are always opportunities to improve yourself, you just have to look for them and be open to them, be positive and not just doom yourself to a lesser fate than you deserve.

As humans you either end up dying early and be freed of everything before they come into your life or uou live into old age and fall into two categories. One is you made plans for yourself and use others such as your kins or tenants to keep you alive. The second is you have no such luck and blessing and you work to stay alive for as long as you can endure until you fall apart and die shortly afterward. That is life. There is no exception gor anyone in this world. The only difference is your reaction to your eventual fate. Some will develop bitterness while others will develop peace or joy etc.

I mean it good to work as we cannot be too bored, if their doing this as a part time or a hobby then it alright but to put food on the table paycheck to paycheck then it wrong

If you have multiple houses like me you can sell one or a few away to liquidate out the cash depending on how much of a apender you are in life and then you will be free to do whatever you like such as what im doing now. If you are single with only one house and no other streams of income well you can sell your house or lease to do the same thing too. If you have children then you cannot do what the first two paragraphs mentioned unless you want to leave them with nothing after you pass on. If you don't even have a house or anything worthy to sell to get cash to live in this world then even i dont know how to help you. Goodluck.

I’m sitting on the board of some companies, including mnc. I don’t encourage people to sell assets to get money for living cos it is a solution that will be depleted. I teach them, through others, how to make use of existing resources keep creating wealth!😝

Oh by the way tell your thoughts to pap yeah? They don't believe in your crap to begin with. They ask citizens to sell houses and leases as well as downgrade if people are in a money pinch situation. Never have they once taught people how to invest and enable themselves to be financially strong as you espoused.

Don’t be silly, your comment is hidden from top comments, you know why?! 1st of all, you are talking about HDB? So you are the hdb type?!😝 Secondly, you think creating wealth is only through investment?!😝 Oh ya, is not surprising for a person only able to talk about inheritance & selling houses. 😝

Stop blaming FT for everything. Your children have to earn their own keep. Cant find job then go overseas...find a job. Yr job as a parent is done. Stop mollycoddling them!

You have eyes to see just how many fts are working in all the companies among the locals and in high civil sector positions it is even easier to do a simple background search to see how many of them are migrants and foreign scholars who became assimilated citizens due to pap foreign serving policies which has been running for decades. He is not blaming the fts. He is describing a widely open known fact for people to remember that's all.

Sorry as a parent I won't be so cruel to my children like what you suggested. I will want to ensure they have a place to stand in their own country after I am dead and to do that I will use my living moment to watch pap like a hawk. Like hell I'm going to stand by doing nothing and repeatedly voting pap into power watching them to grow obscenely rich while I screwed myself and my descendants.

50/50 is not true! My grandparents are living in a small old HDB estate. They have not known any neighbour who has to work for a living. Instead, many enjoying coffee with friends at food centres, or accompany by helpers shopping at HDB shop houses, or participating activities in the elderly centres etc.

Of course, for those inclined to deceive themselves that not that many people are much better off than them would like to imagine that at least 50% are in the same shoes! Don’t forget, more than 50% of CPF members chose to defer their RA payouts to 70 yo!😝
