I am Native American and we are told to never whistle at night as well. Only bad is out at night and you will call something as she did. This is the first time I have heard a non native story about whistling. Interesting that the grandmother grew up with that info.

I was born and raised in Ohio, but both my parents were from a very rural area of West Virginia. I, too, was raised to never whistle - especially inside the house. It didn't matter if it was day or night, we were NEVER to whistle. I was pretty much a single parent of two daughters. I didn't ever whistle, so apparently they never were inclined to whistle. We lived in the rural area of Northeast Texas. They grew up and moved off, had families. I'm 70-years old now. Daughter #2 has a son that's begun whistling... Instantly i get a knot in my stomach. Despite several stern requests, he still does it. I don't know WHY I was raised to not whistle, but I've noticed several situations arise in their home that I believe were instigated by this whistling. Daughter #2 believes whistling is something innocent and I'm just superstitious. But, due to the amount of drama that seems to be increasing, I don't think so.

my grandmother and mother always taught me to never whistle at night because “it’s bad”. That is what they would always say whenever I would ask why.

Sounds like stories I've heard about shape-shifting mimics that prey on humans. They don't make their own sounds but allegedly use yours.

My husband's family is from west Virginia and I asked him about this. And he said I was taught that everywhere. You should not whistle in the woods after dusk.😮😮

I heard a whistle while in Appalachia and I can't even tell you how scared I was. It sounded about 15-20 feet away and there were no people around. My husband had no idea about the folklore, which was all I thought it was up until that moment, and he asked if I heard someone whistle. I waited until we were inside to explain it to him 😂

I’ve been watching Expedition Bigfoot to much I’m sure but what she described sounds like the experiences those people had with Bigfoot. Silent, heavy air no movement then the mimic whistle. Creepy. Set out an offering like an apple and a marble or something like that. It’s gifting and if you get a gift in return then Bigfoot/Sasquatch is ok with you. That’s what I saw on the show. Do what you want with that info. 😊

I don’t know, Mexicans whistle a lot. There is even an area where it’s mostly indigenous people and they created a whistle language to communicate from longer distances. I mean there are tons of spooky stories down there, but not ever related to whistling

Lived in KY and ran wild, but was on military base except for a few times went to a friend's grandma's house out in boonies like that which didn't even having indoor plumbing and we had to use an outhouse. (Imagine being a night pee-er... argh...) So didn't hear that there but then moved to GA where I've lived since then 30+ years and am in Appalachia now whereas in KY was on western end of state at Ft Knox. So I'm in the in-between constantly of having grown up here, will consider myself a local as opposed to some carpetbagger that's been here 3 years and trying to run for office while talking down to us (Oh that happened recently and they pissed everyone off... complaining about certain county traditions too...) BUT am not LOCAL local where I was born here and have generations of family. Those are the ones that usually will look at me and tell me my accent is weird lol Yes, I actually have a bit of my mom's Minnesota accent mixed in if I say certain words, lmao. Only them and Minnesotans catch it. So that being said, I've heard the don't whistle and also the rumours about hearing your name at night.... about hearing other things... have heard stories and even a video clip of reports of sasquatch activity in area. BUT was not raised with a grandma here to tell me more other than me vaguely knowing of the whistling and hearing name and other sounds. The sasquatch stuff comes from being into paranormal and so will look up ghost stories from region, of hauntings - which is how I met a longtime friend and his eventual wife who are semi-well known - and you get cryptid stories mixed in some places. I don't like going near tree-line in dark and ofc my dog tries to head that way many nights and it's like no way. But many nights he will stop and stare in a way that both freaks me out then pisses me off he freaked me out, lol. Like dude, stop that. lol Bc have lived in places surrounded by woods and just got creeps, partly bc I just have anxiety anyway. But current home is near town square but still in wooded area between it and our local fairgrounds. So enough wooded to have wild animals and such... so enough for me to be like just nope. And you catch shining eyes from time to time... and have heard such screeching, but mom says is owls... but omg the sounds. Also about once or twice a year all the dogs at the shelter that is next to fairgrounds will suddenly in the middle of a cold night just sound like.... I don't even got words. It is upsetting to hear and raises hair on back of your neck, and actually happened this past week. I have to turn tv back on from pause to cover sound to keep my own dog from getting visibly upset. I probably don't want to know what causes those dogs to make that sound..............

Lol just hit me to say that technically my mom broke that rule all the time on base. Again, as could tell, this was early 90s on base and we just ran around base all day, going wherever and that included into the woods and these not sure if you call them aquafers that ran around edge of that part and under the roads but usually only had a few inches of water trickling through. Anyway, as soon as dusk came and street lights came on, my mom would be outside with this whistle she is able to do and some of you have moms that can do it to where you can hear it all across the base. And it meant time to go home.... so my mom whistled almost every night LMAO
