Located inside a former public housing block in the quiet but central neighborhood of Spaarndammer in Amsterdam, Tiny Loft is home to owner/architects Peter Canisius and Eline Degenaar of Studio Canisius Degenaar. Key to the overall design was to connect the attic storage, previously only accessible by a common exterior staircase, to the rest of the apartment by way of an internal staircase and changing the storage into the bedroom. The internal staircase is housed inside a central floor-to-ceiling oak veneer storage wall, which also extends into the bedroom forming the balustrade with integrated shelves. The storage wall consists of plenty of closed as well as open storage spaces on the edges, accessible from multiple sides. The new kitchen was shifted out to the open space which includes a combined dining room, freeing up space to transform the old kitchen space into an office. Living, sleeping, cooking and working are now all situated close to window openings, making these spaces feel light and airy.

I agree, there are a lot of houses on this channel that compromise a lot of practicality for aesthetics. Like that one house that does not have a closet because the owner prefers a large sunroom, that's why the only storage space in that house is through a little door (1 feet) in the living room that they must crawl through.

@@meliskaraoglan9318 Maybe, but I don't think you should sacrifice storage space for an unusually large sunroom when you already have a reasonably sized daylight in the middle of the house just for a bonsai tree. @@cassuaris Yes, I was amazed when visiting Amsterdam to see how very narrow the older houses are, and how tall! Many still have the 'hoisting beam' (hijsbalk) on the gable. In Paris, stairs are not so narrow, but even so they often use a 'monte-meuble', 'sort of a motorized ladder with a platform, to carry heavy furniture to upper floors.

There's also no way that's 49sqm. My old apartment here in Amsterdam was virtually identical to their downstairs - mine didn't have the attic, and mine was 50sqm. This with the attic has to be at least 65/70sqm. It would have been so much more interesting to see them build out one floor along the same design concept but include a bedroom, as this basic layout/apartment is extremely common here - pretty much the standard (minus the attic, which is very rare and you'd be extremely lucky to find a place with two floors of any kind at this price).

@@obscurazone Hmmm.... that living room seems pretty narrow. Its seems to be 2-2,5 meters wide and just a little longer than the couch. So 10m2 for that space alone would be generous. Same for that tiny bedroom. Double for the kitchen area (also generous). Thats 40. 9 left for the bathroom. It could be true. They try to make it as spacious as possible on camera.
@obscurazone
@obscurazone Жыл бұрын
It's a great layout, especially the fitted storage which is ALWAYS the main problem in Amsterdam apartments, but unless you are extremely lucky to get on the housing ladder and somehow stumble upon a place where you get the top floor and attic space (rarely if ever) this redesign is the stuff of pipe dreams. Hardly anyone in this city could do this plan at this budget, and unfortunately we are left scrambling around fighting amongst eachother for pretty much everything that comes to market. The housing situation here is absolutely diabolical - at crisis point, and the costs are now insane. I would have been really fascinated, to see how they would have designed that place WITHOUT the attic, how they would have gotten a bedroom and that storage into the main space, as indeed this then could have become a blueprint for the rest of us living in virtually identical spaces. It was a good episode, but honestly...having lived here for so long, kinda frustrating as it is the sort of size/price two floor apartment that just isn't readily available We mostly live like sardines. On one floor. Good for them though!

I’m curious about the m2 of the storage. Maybe 8-10? That makes the main floor around 40m2? Our flat (1905 in Cremerbuurt) is 50m2 on the second floor with an office in the storage (4th) accessible by stairs. Not as convenient access but definitely useful space. It works for us. Do you have any storage? Or just your main space?

I keep my tv the exact same way they do: On a low simple shelf with wheels. I prefer it like that because: - can wheel the tv away to not have the it be the centerpiece ("altar") of the living room. Both visually, and for it to not catch my attention. - And when having guests, it makes the living room more flexible that I am able to remove the tv. - Plus it allows my son to move the tv when he plays PS: The apartment is too small for him to have a large tv in his room. And even the living room is small, and to avoid people constantly crossing in front of the tv, because it is in a main walkpath of the apartment, he can pull the tv closer to the couch.

And again the importance of built-in smart storage solutions is showcased. My old apartment would easily have worked for our family, had we had better storage solutions! I was pleased seeing that the architects played with boxes and their furniture. I do that every time I move, but using millimeter paper and cutouts of my furniture. Obviously I'm not doing everything wrong! Thank you for your video!

Very nicely designed home. The only slightly negative thing for me would be to have a window behind my head in the bed. The rest of the apartment was extremely nice. Beautiful contrast of the kitchen with the wood. And the backs of the dining room seats matching the kitchen colour gives great balance. Great work.

Love it, perfect for living/working. It is spacious, clean, and warm looking without doing concessions to the storage. . I can imagine they left the city center to live close by, quiet, green, but next to the lively center.

The apartment is a lovely, bright airy space. So much hidden storage makes it feel calm and tidy. I could easily live in a space like this! Very well designed!

this is so beautiful. Perfect harmony. Everything has purpose, there is simplicity and modernism throughout the entire unit. that oak veneer finish is to die for.

Very smart. Although there's lots of wasted space above the upper kitchen cabinets, which could've been extended up to the ceiling, with pull-down doors and shelving for access without steps.

The framing at 0:54 looks like that pointillist painting. Nice camerawork!

A truly terrific and impressive floorplan and interior design. There is natural flow and it makes sense. The living/lounge and dining rooms utilise the abundance of natural light with the bonuses of balconies on each end. The storage solutions are a standout feature.

Fabulous! The clever design makes the apartment look really spacious. Only minor criticisms are that the bedroom doesn’t look very cosy (ie, restful and conducive to sleep) and that clothes rod in the open wardrobe needs a support in the middle - it’s drooping quite badly. Beautiful apartment - I’d live there!

It's not only a beautifully functional layout, but also the fabrics chosen for drapes and flooring have a very warm, earth-tone feel which warms the space up; also the large green plants. A beautiful contrast to some of the overly austere apartments I've seen on this channel recently. Love this one!
