I honestly think they over-did it on the reanimator. Unless points have been adjusted appropriately for a 3inch aura. I would have understood 6 or 9 inches. But 3 was wild.

Well i asume the Reanimator got much cheaper so instead of having one massiv 12" Aura in the Backline you now field two or even three Reanimators in your Frontline. And now you actually have the oportunity to fire its weapons and 6 shots at s6 ap-2 and d1 isnt to Bad for a Support unit. So now you have Walking gun platforms with buffs to your Reanimation protocols wich is kinda cool i think.

They should just make Cryptek able to attatch to ANY Canoptic unit. Would help that 3" range on the Reanimator and make more units appealing over Wraiths and C'Tan who are about to get spammed. @@michaelbuckthorp977 Psychomancers are good, they make Necron Warriors actually able to hit something. You used to be able to pair him up with Anrakyr and bring them up to like the same level of lethality as an Immortal unit, which was nice since Necron are NOT renown for their firepower. If they really wanna open up some possibilities, they need to tune up the basic unit compositions, not make hyper-focused detachments for models that everyone wasn't buying in bulk. It shouldn't feel difficult to build out a unit, especially since 10th E. is so dependent on leadership.

I love Michael to bits, he is by far my favourite player on the channel and his videos are the ones I look forward to most. That being said I cant agree with many of these takes. Necrons were/are doing poorly in the meta - and the majority of the core of a typical necron army (especially warriors) was HEAVILY nerfed, not side graded. Our wargear is purely chance based and doesnt autoresolve either which is unique to our faction and wouldve been an easy fix for GW to apply to give us a slight boost. I understand Michael (and the wider channel) are trying to put out a positve message and keep friendly with GW, but it feels like we're in for a VERY rough edition for a second time in a row, especially as there is plenty more codex creep to come.

Just to clarify, I dont believe we were ever a terror competitively - I believe our playstyle was ultimately a feels bad for our opponent if they were unprepared for us. Lots of these changes have moved us away from that - I personally do not feel anything should ever be 'unkillable' in a dice game, similarly to how I feel there shouldnt be units with a delete button. I have so far had fun playing MSU style necrons, and with the points drops I think this is the way forward competitively. Im optimistic that with some more tinkering some board control style lists will emerge, specifically in both the Cryptek detachment (3 man tomb blades are fantastic in this) and the teleporty one ( this is the one I feel I will need to spend the most time figuring out). @@michaelbuckthorp977 Honestly, Space Marines have no problem wiping an entire unit of Necron and once it's gone, you can't res them anymore. They are FAR from unkillable and rely a lot on rolling well to keep themselves from being tabled before the end of the game.

@@michaelbuckthorp977 I don't have 400pts of res stacking, I've been buying the command and recruit boxes and only recently grabbed some immortals, some Lokhust Destoyers and the Royal Court when it became available at GW. I was prepping up for some variety knowing that my basic survivability was probably enough if I could get some good shooting in, but now I have to worry about stuff being WAY too squishy. NOW, I have to try and stack as much res and def as I can.

Point drops as compensation for a nerf is not a fun way to balance the game though. Because it makes all armies into horde armies and asks people to pay more money for already expensive armies. Thats the real stinker from this codex

Mine is a silly little guy. He woke up on his world, most of his necrons did not (hence why i have a ton of cryptek units). Most of his worlds were lost. He went a little nutty and now welcomes any xenos into his society as necrons (not slaves) if they pledge to him when he conquers their world. So far he has only conquered an Imperial world where the defending astartes chapter started nuking the hive worlds when they learned that the citizens were willing to submit. One hiveworld survived the purge and is currently living on the homeworld but ofc things are still grimdark. Lot of politicking between the lords and crypteks over the phareon's current...mental state. Some, like the lord of agriculture, are thrilled because they actually have power again and not just a meaningless title (as necrons don't need food), some are disgusted they have to 'acknowledge' lower life forms as necrons and are plotting against the phareon. One cryptek in particular is secretly experimenting on the human populace trying to figure out the soul engine process that turned the necrontyr into necrons in a twisted attempt to please the phareon (afterall humans die all the time but if they were made of necrodermis...) Plus I get to kitbash some guard units with Guass weaponry

The only thing I don't like about the new Necron's codex, is it doesn't have the same feel that the detachments the Space Marines got to make each feel like the different chapters. The thing I liked the most about the Necrons is their dynasties. I chose the Novokh because I liked the way they looked and was interested in how they would play. I never got the chance to play them, but it's a little disappointing it's not like it. I can see why they didn't, to make it feel different from the Space Marines, but still. I think I'll still enjoy playing them nonetheless.

To play devils advocate here all marines had to differentiate themselves were their chapters. When you have over 150 data sheets it’s very difficult to make them different without “thematic” rules. However I do agree with you that necrons are missing “identifiable” detachments. Marines did get lots of their chapters back in their codex while necrons got a lot of cool detachment rules however they didn’t really get any of the OG dynasties back.

My poor warriors...they didn't deserve the shotgun blast of nerfs. (okay maybe they did but I liked the d6 revives dammit) Plus I worry that they're just going to swap lychguard spam with wraith spam, so we're back to the same issues. Also, I've heard the term "sidegrade" so much in these reviews as opposed to what many are considering pretty harsh nerfs to units that I'm wondering if GW issues a script with the early codex.

@@shadowmancy9183 Res orb, reanimator, reanimation protocols, Reaper strength and I'll a bonus one with Anrakyr being removed. They are slow, can't shoot for crap, aren't tanky and now can't replenish their numbers effectively. They are useless and the most common unit Necron players have.

@@Gakusangi I started with rolling a die per model you lost at the end of turn, and on a 4+, they stood up with one wound, regardless of how many they normally get, and Res Orb was a 12" aura out from the Lord to help protect against a unit being wiped. This is fine. Gauss flayers have always been my preference. The faction still reads like it should- a bunch of robots with weapons that can damage anything (still toned down from when I started, but that's a separate story and would require a system-wide rules overhaul that I doubt anyone but me would like) and keep standing back up. I don't field the reanimator or Anrakyr.

I feel like a big part of why people are griping about the teleported detachment being grey knights-like, in-spite of how cool/good it is, is because some core aspects of the army got undermined or weren’t raised up. Annihilation Legion is a biiiiig miss not even working for all the destroyers or giving a substantial buff to the ones that it does affect. The reanimating protocol nerfs on warriors and the reanimator kneecaps the key feature of Necrons, that being that they never stay down. Three pretty noteworthy characters got axed entirely. So yeah, there’s some good stuff in there, but it isn’t a furthering what Necrons are known for and why people might choose/like them. I think the Monolith being usable in Hypercrypt and the Canoptek Court as a whole are really the best and only examples of improvements on what is core to Necrons.

I dont like it as its point to a worse possible future. That many of the "Detachments" in different Armies will be Copy Pastas of each other. Why? Cause its so easy to do instead of GW having to come up with 5 totally unique buffs and ways to play for every army. Instead which of the lets say 20 or 25 predesigned ones from the past 8 armies fit the next one up. IF this ends up being the case then 10th is going to get REAL boring by the end as youll end up with Mirror matching detachments, just with different units. And yeah the Destroyer legion is flat out crap cause its only for Melee Destroyers, which the OG Destroyers that got everyone to like the idea of the Destroyer cult arnt even Melee.

As someone who just started to get into Necrons because of the index, these massive nerfs to my favorite units and combos is devastating. I was so excited to buy into Necrons because reanimating and being so tough was so fun. And now you're telling me that all my favorite units and combos are gone? Why would you tell us this codex is about sidegrades and then go on listing nothing but nerfs and restrictions? I wasn't hoping to get stronger, but I was hoping for more options. Now I have fewer options since all my old strategies are gone. Lychguard I understand but really, 3" on a reanimator? No extra reanimation on warriors? And I don't like the idea that every unit in the game can be balanced as long as you reduce the point cost. It seems every army in the game is a swarm army now because instead of getting proper balance we cut points so that players need to buy extra model kits to fill 2000pts.

Hard disagree that the datasheet changes are a sidegrade. Warriors and Lychguard both got flat nerfed and received nothing new in exchange and the reanimator got hammered so badly it's extremely unlikely to show up on the table at all unless it is insanely cheap. The reanimation synergies also got so heavily nerfed that the armies overall staying power was greatly reduced. Not saying the lychguard and reanimator didn't need adjusting, they just totally overdid it with them.

I think we came out of the gate with a particular play style (lychgaurd), which was both not fun to play against, and ultimately boring to play. This was nerfed, as it was basically a stat check and not fun for an opponent to play against. (think wound shenanigans with thralls.) I distinctly remember thinking at one point that it reminded me of the invisibility spell from whatever edition ago that made a unit only hittable on 6's. The new detachments are going to force a different playstyle, which i can understand is frustrating for players, but I am optimistic.

Hey, uh... I play Silver Tide. Warriors, immortals, a few big guns for back up... yeah, uh... warriors got knee-capped, lords got deep six'd, res orbs got nerfed into the floor, reanimators are now a "don't bother" option again... Yeah, I don't appreciate my army getting nerfed completely without any juice to make up for it. Side-grade? More like downgrade, unless you play Hypercrypt C'Tan spam or throw out three new blobs. Wraiths are the new Lychguard. I know you guys are TRYING to stay positive at best, or just trying to save face to keep getting free new stuff from Geedubs at worst, but I;m not gonna be gaslit into thinking this is a good codex or that Crons were a monster competitively, we just weren't, we were middling at best. Nerfs to all of our synergies and core units and wargear without anything new to counter it was just unnecessary. Back in the cupboard go my necrons...

Ive so far had good success with a unit of 20 warriors with flayers, stick Orikan inside with a royal warden and ghost arc nearby. Points have gone down, youll find it's still pretty durable and difficult to shift. As far as orbs go - the key wording is the end of phase use of a rez orb. You can use this to steal objectives with careful removal or placement of models, which opens plenty of tactical play.

As a necron player I’m very dissatisfied with the codex, I feel a lot of players focus on the lychguard brick saying it’s broken however, necrons were a 48% win rate army with all the other armies having a Death Star unit still. They didn’t need to make the reanimator aura 3” a 6” aura would’ve been better at a “gameplay level” as well since it will most definitely get shot off the board if your opponent knows the army which realistically they will when you explain it to them pre game with the fact that this edition is super killy. The Rez orbs are a side grade but it’s a coin flip. With other factions guaranteed war gear abilities never being a coin flip why is necron war gear a coin flip. The detachments are fine but if the points Stay where they’re at necrons can easily be the worst army in the game for the second edition in a row. We need to be a horde army with how arguably worst the codex made necrons.

This book was about 25 direct nerfs to the only things the faction did well. Not well enough to win over 50% even. And not a single thing in the book says to me that any of that was compensated for in any way. This army will drop to below 40% win rate within a month. every remaining index is better than this book, and the other codex's are better than this book. This army is dead on arrival. No point even playing them until next edition. I'm not even spending the money on the codex. I'll just sit out the game entirely until 11th edition comes out.

@@xxofameousgxx9686you’re not wrong. My friends DESPISED playing my Necrons precisely because they kept getting back up. That’s literally their entire deal. They don’t hit particularly hard (besides the C’Tan shards, but those aren’t able to be spammed), they aren’t even remotely fast, and they don’t excel in melee or ranged attacks. The entire point of the Necrons is that the b*stards just won’t die. With the resurrection orb nerf and taking away the extra RP’s, they’ll be shot off the board almost immediately to the point that you won’t have an opportunity to res them. Besides the detachment rules, I’ve seen nothing here that makes me excited to use my Necrons. They made the Reanimator and Hexmark Destroyer FINALLY worth taking, and now they’ll both be put right back on the shelves, never to be touched again.

The 10th Necrons were not at all OP and were in fact pretty mid in tournament performance. Despite this everything I'm seeing (both points and rules) are unjustified nerfs. I expect their tournament performance to drop totally out of the GW "Goldilocks Zone" going forward. 😞

Yeah, the issue with them was obvious from the first few games that were played, they were essentially a stat check for damage output. For an army that could have dish out enough damage Necrons folded like paper without much threat of return fire. But for anyone else they might have seemed like ever respawning wall you can't get past. Ever more shitty and hordy, I hate it so much.

Have you heard? Ne-ne-ne-nerf is the word. I'm actually a bit upset. More than how excited I am about the new detachments. Happy that there are more options but there are some huge changes that pretty much kill some units. Like already mentioned, Lychguard, Hexmark, Cryptothralls, Reanimator and Warriors. All with huge downgrades and combos removed. It just feels like GW wanted a big shift so that players now have to go out and buy new models. I started collecting just over a year ago and have somewhat 2500-3000 pts army of 'crons, but I can see why some rather just buy a 3D printer when there are so huge changes all the time. We can't keep spending $1000 on models every few months, GW.

For the people reading this please hear me out. I believe that the changes here are healthy although quite annoying compared to the index stage. A lot of people are complaining about the various nerfs to the Necrons which is ok! However I want people to wait and see how they actually play when the codex comes out. When the marine codex came out so many marine players were extremely upset over the Oath change however now that they’ve had time to experiment it really wasn’t that bad. All I’m saying is chill out and let’s wait for the codex!

Well the oath change is different as this codex change is mainly target at the datasheets of particular models, essentially we are getting a sidegrade in terms of which models are good and which are poor. A big point to add to this is that the models that are now good are not in most of the standard box sets so a lot of people are now left out in the cold in terms of having decent armies cause they can't just swap out their lychguard for wraiths or just pull a monolith off the shelf. Warriors are a core stable of the army and it really sucks to see them being gutted as the point drop will likely just add to the feeling of "well if you want a good army you need to go spend more money". That is the crux, there are other changes that people gripe about but to me it's mainly just another round of Games workshop vs your wallet. There are also things that are indefensible.(imo) Like the destroyer detachment is straight garbage for two reasons. 1. Flayers shouldn't be paired with destroyers (i can hear my skorpekhs screaming from here) 2. The army rule is so one sided it's hilarious, it should be something that buffs DESTROYERS, not skorpekhs (and other melee destroyers). Overall i take the codex as mostly negative thing. There are fun mechanics im happy to try out but i guess i have to go wait for my LGS to have a monolith or wraiths in stock to try out the 2 most viable detachments.

They like rerolling charges, and they have pretty decent synergy as a first way speedump, especially if you can wound something with some shooting before charging them in to proc their all hits become exploding ability.

Sorry guys, I'm a necron player. After 20 years, i got back into 40k, and this almost makes the 9th edition seem advanced by comparison. While i do agree, changes should be made to make gameplay as close to 50/50 as possible. This has definitely taken a step in the wrong direction. Small tweaks and minor statistic changes can be a help or a hindrance, and with all do respect, this seems at least to me a hindrance. I have a huge necron army, and as much as it would be awesome to really go all out, the idea that i have to double my army to add up to what i used to use sounds awesome until they die twice as fast. It's a double-edged sword.

My biggest complaints with the new codex are the changes to royal warden (I cant give my warriors assault anymore) and technomancer not being able to take canoptek cloak (fly and lone operative were super useful)

GW nerfed the Necrons ruthlessly, removed beloved characters from the faction that already has just a few and now asks you to spend an ever increasing amount of money for miniatures. It is not a "sidegrade", that's straight up bullshit - it is a downgrade of every unit from current meta, which already had a 48% win rate

Definitely not dead. Coronal shift was due to interactions with strats- giving a Monolith full rerolls to wound or the Assault keyword on all of it's guns, for instance. Core playstyle, from when I started, was envelop and exterminate. Destroyers, Scarabs, Wraiths, and Spyders flank while Warriors and Immortals march up, Flayed Ones/Monolith dropping in as needed.

It definitely depends on A) Points. If everything that got nerfed was cheaper and everything that wasn’t meta but was buffed was more expensive it should balance out. 2) The Detachments work well for us. I’m not incredibly competitive, but everything but Annihilation Legion seem to be stellar Detachments options. It’s great for me as I have almost every Necron model so I can play most of these detachments effectively, but for new people starting out it can be really hard to get into the faction as if you want to play any detachment you’ll need a shit ton off models. Annihilation is destroyer and Flayed One heavy (Flayed ones themselves are far too expensive to army build with), you need a monolith to play hyperphase, a shit ton of Canoptek for the court, and loads of lychguard and praetorians for the phalanx. Overall, the codex seems like it’s fun in a causal scenario, minus the Hexmark Change, if you joined in 9th to get all the good deals we got from the starter boxset.

10 man immortal unit with plasmancer is 195 points. 6 man wraith unit with reanimator is 280 points. doing couple units each. Would still leave you plenty of points to play around with. It is true the 20 man necron warriors will propably be left out. But There are a lot more movement tricks you can do. WIth the hyperhpase court or whatever it's called. And 6 man auto advance overlord. You place it on an immortal unit on the flank and threaten backline units for example. C'tans are also slightly better than they used to be. I mean sure the necrons took hit here and there. But I feel like they could be a lot more fun to play heading into 10th.

they received 6 inchest on their range. and if you put overlord with cloak on them they autoadvance 6. and then there are movement tricks you can do aswell. It is not hard to keep them alive in my opinion. @@nathangontarz4127

If there are no points buffs to compensate the nerfs, there is going to be a massive punch to the W/R in tournaments, and a big question to the effectiveness and viability of some detachments. It's a weird place to be cause all these 'sidegrades' can result in a downgrade if these sidegrades aren't cumulatively equivalent or effective. Like wise it can result in an upgrade if the results become way more effective

Sure - I'm enjoying playing my necrons so far and by our recent tournament successes I wouldn't say we are in a bad spot competitively. I do not subscribe to the 'sky is falling' mentality that certain hysteric portions of the necron community do, hence my positive outlook. This codex made everyone pivot and learn to play a new way. Is it worse than before? No, not unless you bought 3 reanimators and 60 warriors, in which case, welcome to 40k meta chasing.
