Picking your first army can be challenging, so in this video I go through what I think are the best Warhammer 40K armies for beginners to get started with in 10th edition.
We talk about who each faction is, the pros and cons of their army, their gameplay and hobby side of each so that you can make an informed decision going forward.
Warhammer 40K has a rich and wide variety of armies to choose from, which for a newer player can be both extremely exciting and a little daunting. While there is no right or wrong answer for picking your first army, in this video I’ll be giving my suggestions of some easier to pick up factions than others to get you started in the game, with a wildcard option at the end.
While there are loads of things you could consider, from the army playstyle being ranged, melee or something in between, the armies cost, the number of models in a force alongside it’s diversity of miniatures, how interesting you find the lore, plus the modelling, painting and rules complexity of the army.
At the End of the day What you like the look of, or the Rule of Cool as you may have heard before, trumps everything - as this will give you the excitement and motivation to get through the modelling and painting stages of the project and get up to speed on the rules. So if the army you like the look of isn’t discussed in this list, please don’t let that stop you from picking the army you prefer the most!

The major advantage of Chaos Daemons is going the 'Monster Mash' route which cuts down on the amount of models you'll be making up but the fact that all the greater Daemons are centerpiece models in their own right and thus are going to take some painting...
@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase 3 ай бұрын
Very true, should help get them on the board quicker than say a typical 2000 point army. Those greater demons look fantastic too and if the time spent painting a normal force was spent on these, I'm sure many players would get them looking really nice, even if a little intimidating to start with.

I totally agree with this assessment. I hate doing rank and file painting, I just won't do it. But doing a few really detailed character models I absolutely will do, so this is a great choice for some ppl.

As much as it makes the community groan I always tell people space marines are the single best starting faction in all of 40k. Their models are larger with lots of simple surfaces making first time painting easier. And Space Marines use everything. Shooting, psyker and melee. They are competent in all 3. Although their combat patrol boxes are hilariously terrible valued. Once you figure out what type of fighting you enjoy the most it will give you a good indication toward what faction you will enjoy for your first real army. I also try to deter people from buying Admech or the sisters of battle for their first army because you need a really really deep understanding and experience with the game to actually utilize their very weird playstyles or you're just gonna get steam rolled everytime.

Don't disagree with any of those points at all, there's a reason why they end up being one of the factions in every edition inside the starter boxes. 👍

Honestly I don't see why people should groan. I'd argue that playing Space Marines of a sort, not counting Chaos of course, -Is a Rite of Passage. I played Dark Angels at one point during 6th edition, still one of my favorite chapters, and honestly wouldn't mind playing them again if I had to. Once you see everything the game has to offer, you can then look towards other armies or different types of Space Marines even. They're the poster boys, afterall.

Just recently played my first Warhammer game with a friend's borrowed Space Marine army and I instantly got hooked and started scouring the internet for info on how to get into the hobby. Your videos are great in production quality as well as very informative for someone new to the hobby, thanks for the content and keep up the good work! My friends suggested me to pick up a combat patrol for a faction I like as a starting point, and that's how I ended up watching your video ranking the combat patrols. Not yet sure which one I will pick up, currently deciding between World Eaters or Chaos Space Marines, would like to make a Word Bearers themed army, although I am not sure if that is even possible. It is a shame that the Chaos Demon combat patrol consists of only Khorne demons, I would be interested in making a Slaneeshi focused army, although I have heard that the Emperor's Children should be getting their own army, which would be very cool if that's true.
@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase 2 ай бұрын
Awesome, welcome to the hobby! So in terms of the word bearers, you can paint your chaos space marines in any scheme or chapter you like and not be tied down to a specific detachment. Best part of 10th. So if there is a detachment in the upcoming chaos codex you’d like to use, your army scheme won’t stop you like it would have in previous editions. The newer possessed kits/ accursed cultists and dark commune are great for a word bearers theme. Or if you can find the old start collecting box/shadowspear half it’s pretty much perfect. (Might well be a very hard find) But if you’re playing combat patrol games to start the chaos box is a nice start and a dark apostle is definitely on theme for word bearers 👍 Emperors children are rumoured to be coming this edition, but as there are another 2 years to go it could be a long wait. Thankfully with demons the kits are slightly cheaper, and you might be able to come across one of the older start collecting boxes for slaanesh (might be a hunt on eBay/Facebook marketplace) I’d certainly pick what you’d like the most though. Glad you enjoyed the videos 🙂

Returning to this hobby as someone starting with Tau late into 5th edition and played them along side of Dark Angels in 6th. I got the Eldritch Omens set as a way to introduce my brother into 40k since he wanted to play Elfs so Aeldari was his first pick. I wanted to get into Chaos this go around, thinking of doing Thousand Sons since I wanted to play something similar to Grey Knights but was not impressed with how little options they had (At least they were not uber busted like in 5th!), plus you couldn't ally them with a different faction like you could back then. At least with Thousand Sons, you can still use Tzeentch Daemons and Pink Horrors are cool to add to the roster anyway, so I figured I go the Space Egytian for this edition. Plus might have Chaos Marines as a second army in hopes that in later editions they could bring back allies with certain restrictions.
@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase 3 ай бұрын
The Thousand Sons do look fantastic though! You can take squads of rubric marines in a Chaos Space Marine, but sadly that's not the same as the old allies rules. CSM are a really cool faction that will play very differently to your Thousand sons, far more melee orientated. Have you gotten Magnus yet?
@RvBnerd618
@RvBnerd618 3 ай бұрын
@@TheCommandPhase No, but it will be a model that I will be getting eventually for 2k point games. The real challenge will be painting Magnus to Show quality as he is a special character. Was thinking of starting with Rubrics of course, some Sorcerers and continue collecting from there. Forgefiend can be used in both CSM and 1K Sons, so I'll paint it in my Tzeentch color scheme along with the Chosen and Warpsmith to get my practice in. From there I'll play the missions from the Eldritch Omens with the CSM and once we get familiar with the rules and start to get to 1k points for my wanted faction, thats when I will switch to Thousand Sons. Same for my brother's Aeldari.
@joshtucci468
@joshtucci468 2 ай бұрын
I think the OG big 4 (Space Marines, CSM, Aeldari (Eldar) and Orks) are just the best for starting as they have the most diverse range which allows new players to experience all facets (shooting, melee, movement, infantry, vehicles, monsters, different weapon types) with the differences being IMO the most important gameplay difference which is army style (horde, elite, tanky, glass cannon). From there players can see what they like about the game and either expand their current army or chose to build a second army that’s more focused (Tau, WE, Guard etc). Tyranids can be good but probably for the players who’ve come from other tabletop miniatures games as board control, deployment and building are key units to help your lesser units is a more advanced skill IMO. But also pick the army that has the coolest models or the sickest lore

Sisters of Battle or Votann would make more sense than Tau. Well, if giving advice to a new player I would first ask them if they plan to stick with only one army or if they're probably going to end up trying multiple. Tau is a decent recommendation if they're the *only* army they'll play, since the skill ceiling is only beaten by Dark Eldar. But if they plan on playing multiple then it's better to steer them towards something else that doesn't have so many synergy, positioning and range-guessing demands as Tau does.
@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase 3 ай бұрын
Votann were my alternative option for Tau’s slot in the list, and judging by the comments from tau players it might have been a slightly better option. Hopefully when tau get their new codex in the upcoming months and the kroot reinforcements it might well improve things.

@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase Ай бұрын
Awesome - aeldari are in a pretty good place right now, although I'll always tend to say pick the units you like the look of the most for an army/want to paint up. That being said, so units that may well complement your current force well would be - shroud runners/rangers/swooping hawks for some more speed and ranged attacks, an autarch as another leader, then depending on which way you'd like to go with your army you have all of the aspect warriors like howling banshees, striking scorpions, warp spiders and fire dragons with the latter two being pretty good right now, or could include some vehicles like vypers/war walkers/falcons or fire prisms. Or if you wanted to play some more resilient units you always have the wraithguard to complement your knight in the box. It really does depend on what style of army you like and how you'd like to play. The rules and points can be changed fairly regularly so what is good right now may not be in a few months time. So going back to what you like the most is far more important :)

I’d potentially look at mixing up your options to give your list building some flexibility. Plus they offer a different use type to your army than a Wraithknight would. That being said, if you’re liking how the wraith knight is performing on the tabletop and want another one then obviously go for it 👍

@everettcolby8976 looks like a really fun list to get started with. Plenty of fast morning troops for objectives. Nice amount of firepower and the spiritseer wraithguard combo will help with claiming the middle objective. Certainly something to aim for and then if you feel like you need some other units, like d-cannons in there instead of a falcon or more troops/bikes potentially for objectives/secondaries then you’ve got a great base to work from. You’ll have to join the discord and share pictures with me of how you’re getting on. Would be great to see this force grow 🙂

I think a pink/purple hue tau army would look pretty cool tbh! The way I tend to find inspiration for a colour scheme is generally on Instagram or even Pinterest can be somewhat helpful. Even if you don’t find something specifically tau, the colour follower by Warhammer 40K will generally find you a lot of images in instagram. In terms of the painting, honestly don’t worry too much if possible. You can always paint over it if you keep the paints pretty thin and it doesn’t turn out how you’d like. Or there are ways to strip the paint off without damaging the model worst case scenario. I’d certainly do a test single model for the full scheme just to see if you like it before doing the rest of them. That way you can see what works and what steps you could avoid next time. Or if you have a games workshop near you, they often do a free model of the month you could practice on first if you’d prefer to. Hope you enjoy the tau 🙂

Hmm, I have brought a few people into the hobby over the years and I have to say, I disagree on quite a bit here. World Eaters only play one phase, but they arent easy, especially if you dont know what you're doing. And additionally, they offer no variety in terms of playstyle so once you get frustrated because people keep shooting you off the board, there is nothing else to do other than improve... or leave the hobby/faction. And Guard should be on the list at least next to T'au. They offer kind of a similar playstyle and while Xenos are cool, everyone will have a grasp on what the Guard units do and how they play so starting/remembering gets a little easier (and the 2nd hand market is a lot bigger there, which more than compensates for the more hordy faction).

@TheCommandPhase 2 ай бұрын
Hey - thanks for the message and welcome to the hobby! So in terms of Orks, please don’t be put off by them at all - they are a fantastic faction, lots of awesome sculpts and character and a brand new codex just around the corner too which will add a lot of variety to list building going forward in 10th. Things to note from your comment - don’t worry about how “competitive” the faction is right now. The rules change and so do points values and the meta - so what is ok now could be great in the future and vice versa. The vast majority of armies are pretty expensive, that’s just GW in a nutshell, but as I mentioned in a recent video there are loads of different ways to save money collecting this hobby. And in terms of the painting side of things, they won’t be anywhere near as bad as you may think. There are loads of ways to paint them up fairly easily with contrast paints and such. Plus weathering on them looks amazing and can hide a multitude of sins too! I certainly wouldn’t say they are one of the hardest factions out there to paint, that’s for sure! For a starting point, the combat patrol is pretty good - or if you prefer the look of the beast snagga’s there has been a Christmas box which is great value or potentially on eBay/facebook maketplace you might get lucky with an older army box. The other option really is to pick up the Kommando’s kill team kit. They are great in game and also allows you to play Kill Team while you build your force, plus you can see how the modelling and painting goes without spending a lot of money up front. We may find the combat patrol box changes once the ork release comes in the next month or so, which may well provide a better or worse option than the current one - so could be worth waiting to see what it might be. Hopefully that was of some help - but I would 1000% say stick with Orks - you’ll have a fantastic time and learn a lot about the hobbling, kitbashing and so on as you go! Remember Orks iz best!

I'm surprised you skipped Orks with the advantages they have. Painting is super easy because even a bad paint job looks great. Fighting is very simple for Orks, they only want to melee, get suck in! Lastly, they have the best color, green! What more could you want? :D WWWWAAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!
@TheCommandPhase

Don't get me wrong, I love the Orks - they are one of my favourite armies that I own. I just feel they are a better second army than first, due to the love and attention to kitbashing/modelling side that can be done to really make them your own. Plus for a new player it's an awful lot of models (potentially) to paint up, which was one of the reasons I left Nids off the list, even though as an organic form and contrast/speed paints has made that a lot easier to do. That being said, I'll never tell someone not to collect them if the do decide it's the army for them. Coz Orks is Best!

Which of these do you like the look/feel of the models the most of the three? Rules do end up changing as editions go on alonside the balance passes throughout, so I wouldn't worry too much about that in the army choice. Personally I would still recommend Orks or Necrons over Ad Mech as hobby wise they're easier to work with and pretty forgiving on the tabletop. But if you would prefer to play ad mech as you think they are the coolest of the lot, that is all that matters 👍

@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase Ай бұрын
So the harlequins sit in the Aeldari index now so it is perfectly possible to put together a harlequins force from that. All of the units are there for her to choose from 👍 My guess will be when Aeldari get their own codex it’ll get a dedicated detachment of their own, but that’s just for playstyle rather than being forced into. Then it’s deciding on which units she’d like to use or potentially starting her off on kill team as they Quinns are actually pretty good to get started with playing while she builds and paints up a force. Sadly no combat patrol, but she can always mix and match units from the Aeldari forces into it. Hope that’s some help 👍

Good luck my friend, they're really cool and as Command Phase says, you have the best value combat patrol out of anyone currently but painting and assembling is...yeah just good luck. I'm starting with Astra Militarum which, currently, doesn't focus too much around big infantry blobs or battleline so...I only need 20 Kriegers, 8 basic infantry and 1 platoon command squad for my list...however it also means I'm spending money on tanks and bullgryns...

Honestly? You might be happy to do this NOW than in a couple of months time. The current Combat Patrol for GSC is amazing - three boxes basically get you to 2000 points, and it is not a bad list. With the next codex this box will... just disappear. So right now you have an actually affordable way to get a sizable GSC army, but this will not last much longer. Also: GSC do not have to be a painting nightmare. The models are detailed, yes. But they are also meant to be a ragtag bunch of misfits, so some dirty colours or a simple scheme with drybrushing and washes works just fine. Just get painting, you WILL see yourself getting better over time. Most important of all: have fun with this!
@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase 3 ай бұрын
Practice will only improve things so I wouldn’t worry at all about that. It’s a learning experience after all and I’m sure by the time you get to say 2000 points you’ll have plenty you are really proud of 🙂

As a tau player who started with tau, tau is a terrible starting army. We are fragile which means mispositioning is punishing. We have no melee which means you're not going to get to really learn half the game You have to be a bit of a rule stickler as your fragile, no melee mature means that we get punished even harder if we don't know rules around terrain, charging, etc. No way to get someone off a point if they're in a first floor blocking ruin. Anti tank so bad that our army had to go down 30% in points just ti be playable. One of the most expensive armies to collect up to 2000 points as our units are priced poorly and our combat patrol isn't very many points.
@TheCommandPhase
@TheCommandPhase 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this, I'm sure it'll be helpful for a new player to see this if thinking about tau. I do hope the new codex helps to put the army in a better place for you, that and the kroot help to plug the game in some areas. I know I'm excited for them! My aim was to give a pure combat and pure shooting option in this list as I don't necessarily see a one phase army being a big problem starting out, mainly to allow you more time to think and plan out your moves. That and a fair number of people often prefer that kind of playstyle. But in terms of other pure shooting forces, Votann were close (albeit do have some combat potential), but I certainly wasn't going to recommend Ad-mech! (Bless them, one day GW will fix them)
@Speeds_Gaming_Corner
@Speeds_Gaming_Corner 3 ай бұрын
@@TheCommandPhase if I were to recommend a shooting army it would he votann actually. The smaller size collection means it's easier to have a full set, their terminators have some melee, and they have bezerks. I think this spot could have also been filled with nids as they are a "every phase army" by design, even when we have the psychic phase. A shooting army (in my mind) isn't ONLY shooting, it's "best at shooting".

They are both iconic factions and honestly it probably comes down to whether you’d want to be more melee or shooting as a force. A potentially good idea to see which you’d prefer to paint up a whole force of is the kill team starter set. You get Ork Kommandos (which is a great kit) and the Krieg guardsmen plus the rules to play a really fun skirmish game while you build your chosen force at a discount. Especially from a 3rd party stockist.
