4 years ago I bought a new super six hi mod sram red etap for 4,700 euro. The new supersix has more than doubled in price which I think is insane regardless of being disc and a new frame design.

As a mechanical engineer myself I find your videos to be very good with thorough analysis. One thing about this one though is the comment about the chainstays being thinner on the new supersix. I dont believe thats the case because the old model (wich I own) has a waist behind the BB while the new Supersix clearly has the chainstays flush to the BB. I believe Cannondale just moved the chainstays outwards to create more tire clearance. I could send you a picture if interested at all in this. Other than that, keep up. Great content!

Just to be clear, I have not actually measured and compared the thickness of both chainstays so I could be wrong.

The steering stops on the SuperSix seem to allow slightly more range of motion than the System Six. I should take a protractor with me to the bike shop next time to measure them.

Unless I'm mistaken the activation thing is just for cycling dynamics stuff. It should work out of the box for measuring power otherwise. Still doesn't justify the cost of the bike AT ALL, obviously. I'm never, ever gonna buy a new bike again. Just wait a year or two and buy a barely used spanking clean top end frame for $1500 (tops) and build it up with best and even some exotic components and you're still looking at fraction of brand new price. I built my friend a 2015 SuperSix HiMod with some insane components and the cost of the whole thing was ~$3000 with a power meter. Frame was MINT and I got it for $590. Duraace 9150 Di2 Rim groupset, 4iiii PM, all Deda top end components, 90 gram carbon saddle etc. The weight is 6.09kg.

I thought about this yesterday. For the last years it made more sense to sell the old bike and buy a new one. It wasn’t much to save on upgrading components. Now it has changed. In my scenario: Last time (2017) I sold and bought a new bike it cost me 1000 USD (new bike cost - selling price old bike). And new bike had discs and more making the 1000 worth it. Now an upgrade would be 3500 and only give me DI2 as an upgrade over the old bike. I’ll rather keep the old bike then and upgrade it.

@PeakTorque5 жыл бұрын
Everything in the universe has elasticity, to some extent...even concrete. Thus everything is a spring! Haha. What i mean is a flexible spar of carbon will feel springy if you bounce up and down it. It's undamped because there's no viscous damper like you get on a proper shock absorber. I agree its not a problem for seatposts but if they're too soft it can feel pretty weird over 100rpm. Ask any track sprinter to do 140rpm seated on a soft compliant seatpost. They won't be able to do it smoothly!

I agree that it is disappointing that there is no visual link to the previous generations of Super Six. The bottom bracket is PF30A, not BB30A as you stated. Cannondale has 6 proprietary bottom bracket standards now. I agree with you that 86.5 mm width shell is the way to go, but I would prefer BB386EVO as it supports cranks with 30 mm spindles well. The use of the proprietary PF30A is stupid and disappointing. How is the steering stop in real life use?

Love that you use Opera Browser :-) Great Video, Great Comments! Also don't understand why Cannondale doesn't use clean group sets. I use 105 or / Deore Cassetts on Ultegra/XT bikes, but only because they are cheaper. But from the factory, thats plain cheap.
@Laundry_Hamper5 жыл бұрын
I think the PM model is that they're sold to Cannondale for a bit more than a standard crank (or whatever the bulk difference from Shimano is between a million groups and a million groups without cranksets,) and for that bit more Cannondale then get to sell a bike that "COMES WITH A POWER METER****". Then they get that bit of cash, plus a load of people paying the activation fees because, why not, the bike came with the bloody thing and they're not worth more than a regular crank on the second-hand market if they're not activated. The margins are probably a bit tighter but they'll make it up big-time with the volume.
@noahfontaine78325 жыл бұрын
The reason they don’t use a bb86 is because they invented the bb30A and, if they used bb86, sram would need to use their GXP arm, which is absolute garbage.

Interesting you mentioned the dropped set stays, i have a theory this is about the move to disc brakes. Why, when you drop the seat stays it has more force to flex it for compliance, so you can make it thicker for the same flex. But you also get a more rigid structure and smaller triangle to control the twisting forces from the disc brake fitted on one side. Thoughts?

About the price.. Yeah the Canyon have cheaper MSRP prices... but they're usually not in stock. Whereas, I could easily buy a Cannondale today. If I'm patient, I can buy last year's Super Six model with 105 (disc) for $2,700.. Whereas, looking on the Canyon website, in size XS or Small, the cheapest UItimate I could actually buy is $4,000. Yes, I could also wait and snag a scratched Ultimate with 105 or Ultegra on clearance, but I don't know if I could even catch those sales before other people. Another factor here is that the shipping costs from Canyon add another, I forget, $150 or $200.

Hello mate, would have thought you would have had a nosey about on the headset bearings given the last video but looks like you're just in store. I totally agree. The pricing of these bikes is getting ridiculous. I think Specialized and Trek are also guilty of this but at least the Madone is unique and every other team seems to ride a specialized bike in the Peleton, so I don't understand why Cannondale's are hideously expensive either. A project one Madone with DI2 is priced at $15k here in Australia. At the moment for me, it's between the now dating Giant TCR and the Canyon's here in Australia for us normal people without 10k to spend on a bike. It seems silly to even type 10k. Not long ago you could get an Ultegra equipped TCR non-disc for 3k which is enough bike for many of us. Cannondale's have always been expensive here in Australia. If you were lucky, you could get a Supersix Evo with Sram Red for about 4.5k on sale. I don't know where they're made, but they're priced like they're layed up in the US. The new one looks like a BMC and the silly colour stripe with this and the Supersix is very average. Better to leave it unpainted. You can tell with the old supersix they had a crack with the fluro, this one, not so much. The integration of the cabling to the front fork is nice. The current gen TCR is still using zip ties.
@PeakTorque5 жыл бұрын
I hear you. Basically if you're buying an off the peg bike, I think there are 2 that stand out as being the best performance per value. TCR and canyon ultimate. Beware: Read Cannondale’s fine print in their Limited Warranty Policy. They may use it against you for their best interest. My $5000.000 carbon fiber frame Jekyll broke after only six years of use. Cannondale never made a finding that it was due to use or abuse. A hairline crack formed at a week point in the frame. The bike was sold to me with a lifetime warranty on the frame. The best offer Cannondale gave me, under their lifetime warranty, was 20% off of retail - yes, that is right 20% off of retail. I fought them on it over a two month period and lost. So, I am now stuck with a 34lb paperweight. Cannondale has what I feel is the worse warranty in the bike business. If you do purchase a Cannondale bike and something goes wrong, know that they probably will not work with you at any level in your best interest. In my opinion, they do do not value you as a customer, they only value your money. This has been my experience.

@PeakTorque5 жыл бұрын
Of course, by increasing the wall thickness can bring back some stiffness. But, bending stiffness of a cylindrical tube goes up with Diameter raised to the 4th power (D^4). So it's the diameter that has the biggest effect, especially if you want to keep the weight down with thin wall thickness. Thanks.

Finally, You pay more for a cannondale because it is a better and a faster bike. It is that simple mate..

The shipping charge to the UK will be £50 at best. I recently paid $90 for shipping a frameset from Boulder, CO, to the UK, FedEx, fully insured. MSRP is how much higher than the actual retail? £3500? How exactly is the Cannondale (frameset) better (faster or not is down to the rider's ability and disposition on the racing day)?
@simzer5 жыл бұрын
@@82vitt it's cheaper to ship across the border to European countries and to the US where canyon has a distribution center. It will cost you more than $300 to ship to other other parts of the world (like Asia and the Middle East). As for price, I paid €3000 for my brand new bike including UPS shipping from an European cannondale dealer. With regards to how better/faster a Cannondale systemsix frame is, you can find that it in the wind tunnel numbers when it was compared to the rest of the big brands aero bikes. It will save you several Watts if you buy the complete package. At the end of the day, if you are the same cyclist, you will gain noticeable speed when you're on a systemsix bike over what you can attain on a Canyon Aeroad. That marginal gain/speed has considerable monetary value that normal people have no conception of, as all they care about is how much money they're saving.

Oh no... do you even racing man? I don't think so otherwise you would not states such a bullcrap about wind tunnel data. Go, race and guarantee you that lack of Aero bike will be the least thing you blame. Now please stop talking nonsense.

@@JanKowalski-pe9lo actually I do race, and I've studied mechanical engineering, and totally comprehend all the concepts of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Wind tunnel data have an impact on how fast a bike is (if you believe that every watt counts). However, If you have all the power in the world and don't care about how much effort technology and frame design can save you, then yeah..Skip my post and go chat with ignorant people who might share your premise..
