Don't buy it! You are not getting reliability trust me. I bought a 2021 Duke 890R nothing but problems. At 275 miles the the digital display failed waited 4 weeks for a replacement. Then when the signal lights were on the screen would go back showing no information. The cruise control only worked on occasion. Three tripos to the dealer no solution on the cruise that would not set. On the forth trip to dealer after the one year warranty expired they think it is fixed now. My cost to fix ie was $425! Not sure if it works as got the bike back end of October so will have to wait till spring here in Minnesota to see if it still works? I rode the bike once after it was returned now it is leaking oil from the right side of the valve cover! All this in only 4000 miles! I am 80 years old this bike has been ridden very conservatively! Stick with a Japanese bike of your choice! 1

Pay to unlock is a deal breaker for me. I will never support that business model however good the bike is. If I don’t unlock then I feel cheated for having everything at my fingertips but not allowed to use it as intended(also what a waste). If unlock then i will have the same bike for more money and feel tricked for paying someone just to press a button on a computer. Make no mistake they make healthy profit on the locked bikes too, this is pure grubby nonsense.

Its a great feature, you get to try the things to see if you want them. Not every needs or wants all the features, so its a great deal.

Surely someone will come up with a hack. Preferably one that can remove the ‘extras’ when taking the bike to the dealers for servicing and reapply them after.

what makes people mad about the DEMO Mode is that when you buy a product you should have complete control of it and yes the software is included in that product. we dont want to own some bike which runs on a software which is only controlled by the company. and if you guys keep supporting this behaviour from the company, soon everything will be like the BMW's subscription for heated seat.

Oh, but they always charged extra fort those things. Nothing new in that department since at least 2019. Now you just get to try those electronic features first for 1500kms. Honestly, the demo mode is smallest issue with these KTMs and I don't understand the uproar.

The subscription payment model is disgraceful. It's a motorbike not a phone. They may as well rebrand it as Netkicks if you have to subscribe in order to experience the fun. Deal breaker for me.

not a subscription model, its pay once and you keep it. But I agree, they should have made the bike 500,- more expensive and let it come with all the optional electronics.

@@mymatemartin Its just pay once and forget, the demo mode gives a sneak peak on what all the functions can do. Some people like quick shifters, some don't, if you don't like it you can skip that part of the software but the hardware is on your bike if you ever change your mind. KTM does this to reduce production cost (all bikes are the same) but if you want everything you have to pay for software unlocks, I can understand since KTM had to do 100's of hours of research for tech such as traction control, slip control etc.

I would love the price and then what price KTM are going to charge when the demo mode runs out. Frankly i don’t like this model that they are doing. If you are looking for a new bike and you see the dealer price, that should be the price you pay, walk out of the showroom and all is yours. Not then have to pay to re enable features that are all ready on the bike. It is not a good way to go KTM and i hope this changes as it will put allot of people off buying.

A lot of thick people possibly. You would have to add the cost of the optional extras onto the base price of the bike, before you buy normally, you're not going to get them for nothing! The KTM configuration tool let's you know how much optional features are so you can budget accordingly or, if you cant afford them. What KTM are doing is a try before you buy. People whinging "it was on my bike when I bought it so I should be able to keep it". Well you can, if you pay for it. 🙄

Payment to unlock features just makes me feel cheated. I guess Ktm is hoping every company does it so consumers don’t have a choice. Shame for such a great bike.

Totally agree! BMW are charging a subscription to enable the heated steering wheel to work & Mercedes are charging for performance modes (so 0 - 60 is slower unless you pay a subscription) We need to make it clear to these manufacturers that we are not OK with this!

Unfortunately, I predict there will be more and more of this in the future as more options are simply electronic programmes. I understand that Tesla will disable your ability to use super fast charging if you don't get your car serviced on time and by their dealers, though there are many 'right to repair' court cases happening in the US.

I dont get this train of thought. What is the difference in paying up front for extra features or paying to keep them shortly after? At least you get the opportunity to try the extra out, that way you can decide if you really want to pay the extra to keep it, or save yourself some money. KTM are not cheating people. You can't have something on a new bike that doesn't come as standard for free! KTM are just offering a temporary free trial of the option which is generous enough in my opinion. Its not a subscription as far as I know, just a one off payment if you want to keep the feature.

GS rider here, 57, looking at getting something a bit lighter. However, I go camping a lot and I want a case that goes around the exhaust like the GS to maximise space . The exhaust side case on this is just square which is crap and just a bit cheaper to produce. Do not like the idea of software turning of after a period of time. These two things put me off to be honest…..

Hi, I have a KTM 1290superduk gt I purchased new, my previous Bike was a1190 Adventure I purchased new I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER KTM BECAUSE SOME OF HAVING TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS ALREADY ON THE BIKE, LIKE HILL HOLD ITS A SAFETY FEATURE.

The 890 is sound. The 790 had issues because that was the prototype for this bike. This platform is much improved

I own a 2020 KTM 790S and love the bike. Nice upgrades on the new 890 but not worth for me to spend the money right now. I paid in December 2020 $9,999.00 for my new 790S and that was my net price which also included tax and tags. Since than I added various extras to my bike. I have it just about to where I want it. It is one of the best bikes I have ever owned. It performs like a sports bike on raod and a very capable off road bike. No oil leaks or any problems to speak of. One thing I noticed that I do not particuarly care for about the 890 is that it is heavier then the 790. Anyway until my 790S is worn out I will not be in the market for the 890. Though when the time comes to replace my beloved 790S I will do so with the 890. Remember What The Doormouse Said ... PS: i also own a 2015 Harley Siper Low 1200T, a 2020 Harley Low RiderS and a 2015 Motto Guzzi V7II Stone (that I have for sale).

I’d be happy if KTM, through their dealers,offered a discount bundle deal on extra electronics at the time of purchase, rather than getting slugged the full cost. If KTM says they incurred extra costs developing the stuff that have to be recovered and that makes a difference to how much you get out of using the bike, I’d get it. Charge extra when selling it to recover your money.

Putting stuff already on the bike behind a pay-wall and telling us we have the option to unlock it after your 'generous" 1500KM demo, BS KTM, try to compete in price another way. Will you remove all the physical stuff and software if the owner doesn't want it? Don't think so

I've ridden the bike and it's incredibly light. It feels like you're flying on air. But it's also a little bland. I prefer a bike with low down growl and bollocks. This is a bit neutered and whilst I understand its appeal, its not for me.

Everyone know 890 Adv R is the best one out there, but So much electronics make it prone to break down easily, and many don't trust KTM for it...That's why bare bone ADV bikes like Tenere are selling like hot cakes.

Being forced to pay for options that are already installed is pure BS and guarantees a backlash. Other manufacturers like Zero have tried this and couldn't abandon this stupidity fast enough after all the abuse the copped.

Well, if they uninstall the software to drive it, it's no longer on the bike, so I assume that's ok then? Where I live, it will be a huge advantage, as you would not have to pay taxes on the unlock, but if you bought the parts/payed for it while getting the bike, you would. KTM has to make money on addons anyway, so why not save the hassle of having to get it installed? Besides trying it out, gives you a chance to see if you like it or not, before you pay for it. I can see only positives doing it this way. It's coming to the car industry as well (Already there), so better get used to it.

@@keim3548 Interesting. So you're happy paying full price for a bike that has all the options you want, but then being told you have to pay thousands more to keep them working? Will you feel the same way when they switch to a subscription service that will require monthly payments that only end when you stop using those features? As I said, Zero faced such a backlash they were forced to reverse course.

I'm happy with the try before you buy options, as I don't want or need any of them, therefore I don't pay for them. Perfect. I see absolutely no place for cruise control on a bike like this, and what's the point in having a quick shifter when the gearbox is so sweet(?).

I don’t mid paying the tech upgrade, but I would love for it to be transferable to the next bike as you do with other extras. With the current model, I’m planning to keep my 890R for longer just to avoid paying again for the same software. The rally mode it’s excellent - and addictive! I presume those criticizing KTM for charging extra have not tried it yet. Quick shifter and cruise control are truly extras some people won’t bother to pay for.

Stilling is improved for sure. Now instead of hyper ugly the bikes are "only" ugly. Other than that: Still reliability concerns. Still the wrong kind of wheels/rims. Still retarded airbox/filter design. Still hiding features behind a paywall... But fear not. Recession is coming. Culling of bad manufactures commencing in 3, 2 1...

Was seriously considering this bike, until I found out you get half of the electronics turned off! Can't believe KTM think that is any kind of business model considering just about their competitors give you all of these out the box, KTM not getting my hard earned, shame was top of the list until I found this out, good luck and let's see how quickly they back track

The "Demo Mode" is a rip-off. The cost of the "additional" feature is already baked into the base cost of the bike. Translation, you've already paid for them when you bought the bike. But KTM, in all of their grand wisdom, has decided that they will charge you for them again after 932 miles. It's the trial balloon until they roll out a full monthly subscription plan to activate features on the bike you've already paid for. Don't be one of their useful idiots.

I wonder how the 890 will be on the highway for long distances if one can't take the plunge on the 1290. 7K is a pretty big leap to it's big brother.

For long highway the only issue is the seat. I did 13k on my bike in the first half of last summer before I crashed it into a traffic cone. Very very nice for high speed cruising and long stretches of farm roads and trails alike.

So 5 things you need to know, then, as #1 and #2 are completely unchanged 😂 the front end is improved, but it still doesn’t look great. More hardcore off road tyres? Er, anyone heard of the R model? I’d love to know how many people take a twelve to thirteen to grand bike off-road, doubtless sub 10%. Baffling at best. Demo mode is a joke and just money grabbing, but then I’d expect nothing less from KTM.

The pay to unlock is the way for folks to get the same bike for less money. The cost to build two trims of bike would probably eliminate the possible savings of a down spec model. If you are a fully loaded only buyer then it doesn’t affect you, you buy the options anyway. If you are discriminating on options then realize that turning off features is a way to offer you a bike without the added cost. In other words: if they didn’t have pay to unlock the only model available would be the fully optioned one.

I’m not naive, and you’re right about why are they doing this. I understand the practice from the manufacturer/dealer point of view. There is a sense of dishonesty here that bugs me. Ideally a manufacturer would try to give the best they can for the money. This practice comes through as if you can’t afford the extras, you get a nerfed version - which they still have profit on. They make sure you’re aware of what you’re missing. No amount of justification “R&D” whatever would take away that gut feeling that i’m cheated. Either way; both with the unlocked/locked versions.

There is no controversy over Demo Mode unless you have no idea what you're talking about. There is nothing different than it's ever been except you get all of it upfront instead of picking what you want before you leave the dealer or coming back to the dealer when you decided you wanted something you didn't get.

I’ve no doubt it’s a great bike, but for me, it looks awful, as most KTMs do. The lights just look like giant bug eyes and not in a good way, orange isn’t for me either. But I guess most people buying these buy it for the bike and not the looks, so much.

Wont buy any KTM while it wants to rip you off with demo mode, I hope that others agree and give feedback to the dealers as I have, to go back to KTM , its a pity as I did want to trade in my 890Duke R for another KTM Oh well have to look elsewhere

Demo mode is such a good thing, you get to test ride all the features to see if they are things you want. KTM knows what they are doing 🤙

If everyone didnt like the feature and wouldnt buy the bikes, KTM wouldnt do it. Thats not the case, Most people like it or dont mind it. Its just the few entitled ones who wanna bitch!
