New 2025 Toyota Fortuner Hybrid - More Power, Less Fuel!
Toyota is revolutionizing the SUV market with its latest advancement in the Fortuner: a mild-hybrid turbo-diesel power system. This cutting-edge technology, which combines a 48-volt battery and an electric motor-generator, promises to boost fuel efficiency by up to five percent. Though this innovation has debuted in South Africa, its availability in Australia remains uncertain.
In South Africa, the Fortuner 48V model pairs a robust 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with the mild-hybrid system, delivering an impressive 150 kilowatts of power and 500 newton meters of torque. This setup mirrors the configuration found in Australia’s Toyota HiLux V-Active and the soon-to-be-released 250-Series LandCruiser Prado. The Fortuner’s mild-hybrid system also includes a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system, though it lacks the eight-speed automatic transmission featured in the new Prado. The broader range of gear ratios in the Prado's transmission could potentially offer even better fuel efficiency.
Despite these technological advancements, the inclusion of mild-hybrid technology in the Fortuner does come at a higher cost. In South Africa, it adds approximately 11,000 Rand (around 900 US dollars) to the vehicle's price, which is a more significant increase compared to the 590 to 770 US dollars added for the HiLux V-Active in Australia.
One of the challenges for Australian consumers is that their Fortuner and HiLux models are sourced from Thailand, which has not yet adopted the mild-hybrid system for these vehicles. This raises the question of when, or if, Australian buyers will benefit from these fuel-saving technologies in their Fortuner.
The Fortuner has been a staple in Australia since 2015, receiving a mid-life facelift and technology upgrades in 2020. However, its design differs from the South African version. Despite these updates, the Fortuner struggled in sales last year, with only 3,619 units sold in Australia, lagging behind competitors like the Ford Everest and the outgoing Prado.
Toyota enthusiasts and potential buyers are eagerly awaiting news on whether the mild-hybrid Fortuner will make its way to Australia. With promises of improved efficiency and performance, this development could mark a significant step forward in the SUV market. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting evolution in Toyota's lineup.
