Great Vid. The family member of yours that your giving that upper to is getting a great Barrel with plenty of life left in it, that’s awesome of you. I’m really gonna miss the 18” .223 vids, as I have the same WOA SPR Barrel and your Data was great! was fun comparing load work ups. The ACT trigger is definitely not a bench-rest trigger, but is better than a stock milspec. Make sure and run the included purple hammer spring, that will help. If you don’t have the purple hammer spring, the $10 JP precision enhanced reliability spring set improves the ACT greatly. Keep up the great vids.

Might I recommend that while this is a new barrel and you made a comment on wondering about velocity gains/losses over round count. You could also look into accuracy as well by choosing a load out of the ones you shot that groups well and has a small SD for velocity. Load up 100 rounds of this ammo and set it aside. Then every ~500 rounds or whatever round count take the rifle out and clean the bore. Then shoot two 5 round groups (the first for fowling) and record velocity and group size. I might also recommend doing this for all of your new barrels. This would be very interesting data for sure.

Johnny, love the vids. I recently upgraded my ar build with an 18" Faxon .223 Wylde gunner profile match barrel 1/8, in an effort to tighten my groups, but am still struggling with best groups right around 1 3/4" at 100yds. I have tried wide array of match grade factory ammo, Nosler and Lapua included, and recently started handloading with little improvement in group size (so far, 53gn Nosler Varmagedon over 27.5gn CFE being most promising). I have upgraded my optic to a Leupold Mark AR 6-18 and am shooting from a Caldwell stinger rest from a seated position. I am going nuts! When shooting, I have noticed that the rear of the rest does not keep the rear of the stock from shifting a bit. I am relatively new to handloading, with only a couple years under my belt. I don't believe that it is shooter error, as I have worked up very accurate handloads for my Tikka T3 .270 bolt gun, with best groups measuring sub .5 MOA. I am wondering if the inaccuracy is attributable to something other than the ammo that I've used, possibly the receiver/barrel extension fitment. I haven't seen any content related to that topic. I'll add that it is a decent fit, but I decided to shim it anyway with .002" ss stock to take up nearly all slop. Barrel is free floated. I have also considered shooting position or rear support as the culprit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Glad to see a come back to 556/223. Seems like a small workup for each bullet type may be needed again though. Those 69/75/77 bullets should group better than that. 53gr smks is another great bullet used for service rifle.

So did you determine how White Oak times the gas port drilling position, so it does not plunge down through a bbl thread land and raise a burr or sharp corner that rips the jacket off the bullet every time it passes through? Also, can you get these bbls in chrome moly steel, like the original chrome plated military barrels? Chrome moly has better heat transfer coefficient than the stainless steel barrels. I am suspicious of SST barrels that string groups as they heat up, possibly because of assymetric heating. Also, I have read that SST bbls do not respond to cryogenic-treatment.

If you look closely, you can see and actually hear the difference in the mid gas vs rifle gas. The mid bolt cycles much faster than the rifle. You can actually see it. Hearing it, the rifle gas you can hear more of the action as it cycles, it sounds slower, and this smoother.

Good timing. I’m using a LaRue 18” barrel right now and feel I’m at the barrels limit as far as accuracy. I can get MOA sometimes but I’m inconsistent. For example, I’ll shoot a 5 shot group, 4 will be dime size but one will be 1.5” out. I’m at my wits end. I’m looking at the White Oak SPR, or ?? I want to shoot MOA all day and anything better would be a bonus. I reload and have watched all your 223 videos.

ALG is owned by Geissele so that trigger set up isn’t as bad as you would think it’s probably just a nose hair better then mil Spec
@rdsii645 жыл бұрын
Actually the ALG trigger is much better than a GI trigger. In fact I will even go so far as to say the ALG ACT trigger is what a milspec trigger should have been in the first place.
@TheChampionp5 жыл бұрын
I run the ALG trigger with $10 light pull JP yellow springs and I get great accuracy. I have also used the same JP springs on a BCM NIB trigger with great results. There is creep , a wall, then over-travel with a short reset on both "mil-spec"triggers. They behave like a poor mans 2 stage trigger and the anomalies of creep, wall, over-travel, and reset are extremely consistent on both triggers, so the performance is great. I'm so satisfied with the JP spring mod performance, that I don't plan on running any further upgrades for my AR triggers. I'm told not to run them like this if it's a duty rifle or using military 556 ammo because it may misfire with harder primers. Though I have yet to have that happen. I generally use Remington BR primers and WSR, as well a CCI 400 @@rdsii64

I don't know enough about in barrel gas dynamics, but would the mid vs. rifle gas system explain some of the extra speed seen? If you're bleeding the gas off a few inches sooner on the 18", could that drop in pressure make that much difference? One way to find out would be to get two barrels, same length, different gas lengths. Thanks for the video and information as always!
