Is it okay to top coat acrylic painted parts with lacquer top coats?
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity 4 жыл бұрын
yes its actually recommended by most because the laqcuer is a stronger paint then the acrylic paint.

Nice. I think it nice that Mr. Hobby now has water-based acylic paints as they're much safer to use and doesn't have that strong toxic, fume smell. Thanks for this review.

Loved the video! My local hobby lobby just started stocking these paints and I’m about a year into the hobby, finally feeling ready to do a little bit of painting, and I’m finally going to build some larger kits! I don’t want to repaint anything big because I’m just starting out, but I want to color correct and paint smaller details. I plan on hand painting said details since they are small, would you recommend thinner and primer for this?
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity Жыл бұрын
by smaller details i assume you may want to use this in hand painting? should work alright. i havent test that myself with these those

Seems like a pretty solid choice in a pinch. Only thing that bothers me about these paints is that it has some colors that don't have a Mr. Color lacquer equivalent like salmon pink or pale green and all the newer color guides reference this line exclusively. This made it difficult to follow the color guide for MG Turn X and I had to pull up the no grade color guide. I assume that this was an effort by Bandai to make the hobby safer for children but still.

hopefully this is something they will address down the line if/when the line picks up in popularity.

hi i've been on a break from modelling, i have some questions with paint types, lets say i do a laqcuer primer>acrylic base>lacquer top coat>enamel wash/oil wash with thinners>final lacquer top coat. the enamel thinner wont eat through the lacquer coat and damage the acrylic paint correct?
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity 3 жыл бұрын
correct. the laqcuer top coat will protect everything below it

Great video, not much review on the Youtubbe about this paint. Also just bought my first airbrush, I've used Mr Hobby Aquesous before but with hand painted not with airbrush. So how much time do I need to wait between coat if I do light coat ? And how much psi should I need?
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity 3 жыл бұрын
awesome glad you found this video. you really dont have to wait long. i normally do a pass and say maybe two full breaths and your able to go back at it again. i normally spray between 12-20 psi. give it a try and let me know if you have more questions

Hey you're making these paints very appealing and I'm considering a switch! Any idea how these compare to Acrysion (which is also their new water-based paint but not as new)? I only have experience with those but there's so little information available regarding their differences (like their safety when airbrushed) that from your video I can only learn that Acrysion isn't as durable (but still fairly durable as far as acrylics are concerned). Would love to know your thoughts.
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity 4 жыл бұрын
Aaron Chung I haven’t tried the acrysion ones yet so I can’t speak on them compared to these or laqcuers. If your already spraying with acrylics and are looking for a good finish and fairly quick dry time I would definitely give these a try. They really impressed me with their durability at only at about an hour wait time. I’ll definitely have to try the acrysions soon and compare them
@masterkent1
@masterkent1 3 жыл бұрын
Having tried the acrysion paints, they're some of the hardest paints I've used. They don't react well to the usual leveling thinner that I use which means I have to buy their specific airbrush thinner. They also tend to clog my brush alot more. They are pretty good for detail painting however.

I've just bought my first Mr Hobby with the ''Aqueous'' label on it after using them for a long time...H32 Field Grey 1 which according to the Mr Hooby 2019 paint chart is a medium grey green..like WWII German army uniforms and whats in the bottle and the colour of the cap a gloss black..so not sure what's happening there..dries very well and fast tho' not tacky at all

Can we use tamiyas x20 to wash of the panel lining on this kind of paint? Will it bite of the acrylic paint below?
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity 3 жыл бұрын
tamiya x20 is an enamel thinner i believe so your safest bet would be to seal it with a lacquer coat, then panel line and wash. in theory the x20 might harm this paint but i havent tested it.
@ivanmurraylee3885
@ivanmurraylee3885 3 жыл бұрын
@@GunplaUniversity so I had made some research and can up to a comment stating that, solvent based acrylics like aqueous might be ok for panel lining removal using x20 thinner, but water based acrylics like vallejo is not applicable.
@shadowmo3
@shadowmo3 3 жыл бұрын
What is the thinner made of? And I found that the paints still contain a solvent, is that true, and how bad is the smell if I am hand painting with these?
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity 3 жыл бұрын
seems to be an alchol based thinner. in my test run with them i opted to still use a mask since i used laqcuer paint for the primer so i wasn't able to pick up on too much of a smell

Sorry for my confusion. I thought these are solvent (alcohol) based and not water based? The box and manual for them has a "Flammable" and "Irritant" symbols and their site says "The solvent contained in Aqueous Hobby Color paint is very mild." Or is this obsolete info and are these newer ones 100% water based?
@GunplaUniversity
@GunplaUniversity 3 жыл бұрын
hmmmmm you are right the wording is a bit confusing. on the official website under aqueous color it says "water-based acrylic color" but like you said the statement, "The solvent contained in Aqueous Hobby Color paint is very mild" is also there. this should be cleared up by Mr Hobby but in the meantime itd probably be best to assume that it is actually alcohol based
@wasrio1403

This is not a true water based paint they are similar to tamiya acrylics. They mixs well with water alcohol or laquer thinner. They are very versatile paints.
