A lovely build overall. Beautiful clear explanation of your work, with relevant video rather than showing every single mundane task. Can hardly notice that gap on the front right of the canopy. Wouldn't even know it if you didn't mention it. I can certainly see why you would need extra detail in the cockpit. Huge open area. You have a very soothing voice, which makes for a relaxing video. I remember being rather disappointed when my father bought me an 'Airfix' Avro Anson kit instead of one of the 'glamour' combat aircraft of the era. It was probably my third model with the previous two being disasters. Ironically, the assembly went very well although being in the late fifties I suspect it didn't have the same detail. Unfortunately, I wasn't provided with any paint. I must admit I thought the paint work on your model looked rather 'washed out' until I saw the deeper colour of the photographs. Great video and I love the Anson now. I was delighted to see one at Duxford on a visit (from Australia) in 2010 and 2017.

I have really been thoroughly enjoying Airfix models recently. I got into them with the M3 Stuart they did and they are just a joy to build. This looks really great when completed despite the issues what make the build frustrating here and there... I'd like to build one when I can get one. For the missing clear part, you can use two part clear epoxy resin to replicate them, it can be sanded and polished crystal clear when dried.... (Just fill the opening on the fuselage and let it dry.)

I had no warping issue - my clears were perfect.. and good example of the gun - agree it's easy to get wrong.

I'm a new subscriber (only my 2nd video) and I am also new to modeling, and my interests are in the WWII aircraft. I find your videos to be really helpful, especially your troubleshooting process for when a kit goes wrong or your workarounds like the navigator's book (making it more 3D) decal. I appreciate the cinematography, the music, and the editing. I know you must spend a lot of time on the finishing of the video, and it doesn't go unnoticed. I do plan to stick to the Airfix models for my start, but are there other kits that are as well or better constructed and thought out? I have heard that Airfix decals are always high standard and usually their sprues are good to go as well. Thank you!

I think people should be aware of the limitations of models made from the resins called polymers in that not everyone knows that the material is very unstable. I realised this when a part I was trying to straiten using hot water to soften it actually caused the part to shrink. Understanding that oil is added to the plastic to help it flow easier in the injection molding machine means that the parts can change over time and then cause issues with failed mating together and parts becoming brittle. The oil in the plastic can evaporate and cause the part to shrink. I'm now aware that if a kit contains parts which are not contained in quality sealed plastic bags there's a greater chance for distortion. This may be more noticeable in say large hulls of ships and fuselage of aircraft. The sealing of the plastic models after building could help prevent it drying out and the model suffering. But once you open the bags it's actually a race against time to build it before the parts start drying out. Wear gloves when touching the plastic if possible.

I’ve always liked the Airfix Anson in the smaller scale, so this slightly larger kit appeals to me. I think it is crying out for some more refined interior detail from an aftermarket photo etch provider to really enhance it given how much glass there is. Speaking of glass, the fit of that was disappointing for a new tool kit, it should have been perfect. Poor QC on Airfix part and I’m hoping it was an isolated example, not seen other reviews so don’t know if it’s widespread. If I can make an observation on the audio, there is a really annoying high pitch sound in the background whenever you speak, like interference or something. Halfway through I had to mute the sound and turn on captioning (never ideal as it’s hopeless most the time), so maybe a gremlin crept in there somehow. Thanks for the build and information on the areas to watch out for!
@machmodels
@machmodels Жыл бұрын
thanks for the comment!! I completely agree with the idea of using some photoetch to brighten up the interior as it really is very very visible. In regards to QC all other people who I have talked to have had a much better experience with the glass and the warping so I am incline to think I am an anomaly! Thank you for letting me know about the high pitched sound, I think I will be investing into some better recording equipment soon (hope it didn't put you off too much!). Thanks again :)

@@machmodels good to hear the glass is likely an anomaly! Gives a perfect excuse to build another when the inevitable PE assets arrive! With your fit and gapping problems, it looks like Airfix has gone the way of the old Monogram P-61 kit, where it was molded so closely to scale it was flimsy and fiddly to put together, with significant gapping, many like myself quit and prefer building kits that simply go together without the hassle. What was wrong with the way they used to make kits, where the wing halves had the nacelles molded in and simply went together and then you stuck them into the fuselage side slots with the tabs provided? Why the layered puzzle wing assembly that punishes you if you don't get the order not "just right" and still leaves seams and ridges? Not to mention the one piece windscreen and fuselage that will require special fitting, filing, sanding and masking? It seems like you still have to fully sand off most of the finish and then repair it where necessary to maintain panel line integrity, etc.
@machmodels
@machmodels Жыл бұрын
you raise a very good point in the overall potential that manufacturers over-engineer a lot of their kits to increase detail but loose the joy of a simple fit, i think tamiya are the only current manufacturer who provide a outstanding fit and detail!

@@machmodels I am somewhat a fan of the WW2 RAF and the FAA, and I very much enjoyed building the old Airfix 1/72 kits, including their Avro Anson. I have an old unbuilt kit for it in my stash. I read books like "The 1000 Plane Raid" where everything that could fly went over the Channel and dropped a bomb, and as I recall a few Anson's were in on it. Being the equivalent of our Beachcraft AT-10 trainer plus a turret makes a interesting subject. Now after watching your article, especially what happens to the fuselage's finish, I am beginning to regret my purchase of this 1/48 recent release and thinking of dumping it on eBay, because what they did looks like more for the pleasure of the kit's designer then the builder. Thank you for your article, as it has saved me a lot of grief!
