DnB production techniques using Fruity Loops and Cubase. Yo, my new album is out ! It is called SURFACES, and it marks 20 years of me publicly releasing my music. It is a lot of time to be doing this as a hobby, I guess, as I never really managed to make a living from it except in the very beginning, for a very short time. Which will lead me to a future video talking about it more, and the future of IJO. But for now a short break down of a title track of the album Surfaces. I did this track the old way, using techniques I had to come up with my self back in mid / late 90s, when PC became a household thing. I had all these programs installed by a guy who sold us the PC as he saw my interest in music, and I kinda had to figure it all out by my self and come up with my own way of making music, as internet didn't exist at the time. So I made most of my early releases this way, and I am talking about A LOT OF MUSIC. I only changed things up once I got into hardware, which was around 2008. Making these videos is really hard for me, as I don't have much time, and when I do make them - I struggle with explaining what am I doing, and I am not very fluent in this, forgive me ! I could show and do much more, but when in front of the camera, I'm sort of loosing words. I hope you'll find it helpful anyway.

Ive been making music as a hobby for just under 30 years, I dont even have the "making a living" from it at all. I make music because it satisfies my soul.

I really really appreciate these breakdowns man. We about the same age but when i was 20 i couldn't figure out how to make jungle/dnb and gave up for 10 years or so. Back at it these past couple years and its insane the amount of resources available now compared to back then.Lately ive been using the dirtywave m8 tracker to chop breaks. Will check out your album.

Cheers ! Well, over all of these years, i was challenging my self to do all kinds of different styles and genres, so I have pretty much explored everything, from ambient to jazz to experimental to acid techno etc. I always wanted to do different things, as doing one thing over and over again was very boring. Was always coming up with new techniques and so on. Wanted to try different experiences to know what it was like. And now, 20 years later, I sort of closed the whole circle for my self. For now, I don't think I am going to continue doing what I do. Life is crazy these days, feels like humanity is going straight to hell, and I no longer connect with this world, so it is very difficult for me to continue this journey as I don't see the point in all of this anymore. I think I will simply live a quiet life, enjoying time with my family, make music for my self and see the world burn, but hope for any kind of miracle for things to get better :)

Yeah i am coming from being hardcore in to Squarepusher and AFX Drukqs back in early 2000, and I was doing a lot of that crazy stuff my self at the time, the focus was always on changing drum patterns and never repeating itself. It was taking a lot of time , so now i make things a lot simpler but I still have those early aesthetics in me.

Appreciate you saying this. I liked doing them in the beginning, but now I feel like I don't want to do those videos anymore, I am so busy with other stuff, and my head just isn't in this music anymore. So I wanted to chuck out the last bits I have made.

@@IJOSoundVideo Completely understandable! Just so you know a lot of what you've made on your channel, inspired what I make on my own KZbin channel. I've followed you for a while now and your expertise has taught me so much. Whatever you decide I will support you as I know life can be hectic and KZbin is not everything. I loved that video where you spoke about 'being authentic' especially. Also finally congratulations on a fantastic tape! I loved it from start to finish :)

grats on the new album !! This breakdown is much appreciated. That funky drummer sound is iconic. The fx and pitchbends really bring it to the next level

Hey ! Yeah, this whole FX thing on drums came from me studying Drukqs and Go Plastic and trying to figure out how to do that sort of stuff using the methods I know, so I was heavily in to that sort of stuff 20 years ago :) A lot of people liked it, but the big players like Mike Paradinas thought my music was way too AFX+Pusher and didn't find it original enough.. Fair point :D Knowing he recently released an album by Jlin which was like a total 100% aphex rip off either :D

Hey :) I am a bad teacher, but there's nothing to teach either. I am only sharing my workflow and my mindset in my videos. Music making isn't something that can be thought, because it is more of a spiritual thing that comes from a hearth, and this can only be felt by the artist. Every hearth of every artist "feels" differently, so feelings can't be thought, they need to be felt. And if you really feel something and want to put it out through your art - technical skills don't matter at all. In fact - not knowing what you're doing is the best because you're not limited by your knowledge, instead you have freedom to experiment to your liking. If you like what you're doing, if you're really feeling it - you imprint a code in your art which will be felt by others too. And this isn't something that can be thought. You and only you are your only judge, and you, and only you decide what and how you're doing :)
