I watched TB2 launch through the first and probably second seasons (on Prime) before I saw Adam Savage's behind he scenes at WETA. I was stunned to learn that the vehicles in most shots are CGI. TB2 looks fantastic in its launch sequence; imperfections in structure and paint, it looks like is has weight as it shifts down the track. Just spectactular.

I saw the original and it brings back happy memories. The new version has some superb physics in the CGI that gives a realistic look and sense to the engines and how the craft handle. I also like the fact that the new show gives more than a few bids to the original with real life scale models on which the CGI is superimposed. They both have their features and good points.

I still feel the originals moving more slowly had a better sense of mass but I do like the actual take off scene of TB1. The originals were clearly 'big heavy machines' and I always liked that they used springs inside the palm trees for TB2 so they flexed as they fell back to clear the runway (attached to broom handles, operated by a chap standing at the end of the model). Not enamoured of the Wallace and Grommit dressing machinery. I never noticed the problem with the pods in the original (too close together to fit TB2 when it lowered) but as I remember it no one else seemed to either.

Fact, if you watched the original Thunderbirds as a kid, you're always going to have a preference for the original . I mean, that music, that means things are getting exciting. And it was incredible for it's time. Watching in the 90's when Thunderbirds experienced a new popularity, I thought it was fantastic, revolutionary and it was 30 odd years old by then. I have no complaint with the new versions though. Being so much later on and animated they had greater capabilities. I mean, originally, Virgil was put into seat all neatly, but then he had to get up again and change. It made sense for the robots putting on the uniforms, unique to each brother. And the crane lifting them into the main cockpit of Thunderbird 3 made more sense then going up through the centre of the rocket. The music just suited the new look. Good to see bits of continuity in there though. Scott takes old of lamps, Virgil leans on same picture etc.

There was one thing which, even when I watched it on TV way back in the 90's, I considered a bit of a plot hole in the series, and that was how they just _happened_ to have specialised rescue vehicles for absolutely every occasion. And I love how the new series fixes that. The modular design and the in-pod assembly factory were a stroke of genius.

As someone who recently watched both versions, they both good in their own way. They old show is slow paced, beautiful to see and show great special effects for its time, even if some of the shots do hold long for a bit longer than they should. It's to add tension I know but some of it feels like a drag. As for the new show, it fasted paced, good use of both CGI and practical effects (they are in there) and I feel like it's own thing, while having the original as a reference to scenes and even episodes. You don't have to like the new show and I'll admit there are problems too, like some of the CGI is a bit off and I would like a bit more practical but it's not as bad as people say it is. Give it a watch, it doesn't top the original, but it's good in its own right. Certainly better than the 2004 movie that's for sure

I don't think a lot about the new series. And from what I've heard, self-performed bowel surgery without anaesthetic is more fun than the 2004 film.

The new series has very little CG, actually. It's _mostly_ just the characters. And Weta Workshop's scale model constructions are absolutely fab. As for the original's slow pace, that's probably because it was designed to have much shorter episodes, but they were asked to extend it.

What I love about the old version is that the mechanisms took longer to start moving (like T2's launch pad and almost all of the take-offs) which gave them a real heavy and grand appearence. Most things in the new one seem too quick giving them a slightly weightless appearnece and in turn loses that weighty / beefy look

Funny as I hold a bit of an inverse opinion even back as a kid when watching the originals. I always felt anxous about how long the Thunderbirds took to get underway, as they were going off the rescue people and time was precious. I feel the new one strikes a decent balance between giving them time to show off weight and scale, but also speed in getting them underway as quickly and efficiently as they could. Something about tastes and colours I guess ^^

Me too. as a kid that was the best (Original) TB entry method IMHO, I always imagined sliding down that slide myself. The sofa for TB3 was good too but as for TB1 that was a bit dull. Happy days before having to worry about life!

As a little child of the 90's i grew up with the original tv series recorded by my parents onto tapes, I loved it. Still its my absolute favourite and it makes me almost cry in fun to see that theres still a huge community that shares the same spirit. Sure new adaptions wont ever get the same feeling, the same quality the original brought... Doing a really great job in the 1960's. but its really great to see that even after 50 years that spirit is still alive and people at least try to share it with younger generations. Mankind changes with the time's changing and tastes are changing with it. If the new series and the movie creates fans they surely will at least have a look at the origninal to decide what is better for them let's tollerate everyone having a different opinion instead of criticism. I love how the new CGI version does pay homage to the original, but just adds in a few details like the lounge chairs scattering and how they actually get into the vehicles. Whilst I'll always prefer the original, the new version is also an enjoyable watch!

There's actually much less CGI than you think in the new version. They used mainly practical effects and hand built sets. The water in any scenes involving TB4 or Tracey Island isn't CGI. That's real water in a tank.

Not sure I think it's better, but I do love the new series and think there's far too much dismissal of it just because its not puppets, ignoring that the way Gerry made shows moved with the times. He remade Scarlet in CGI and it was even darker, and if he'd held the rights, likely would have redone Thunderbirds in a similar way to TAG.

The original theme enhances the new launch sequence. Every show I watched as a kid that was stop start or with models. Has been replaced with a CGI reboot. There's nothing wrong with them. But they don't capture the heart the way the originals do. THUNDERBIRDS is a timeless classic

All the Thunderbird machines including Tracy Island are real models, Adam Savage former Mythbusters was geeking out on the set of the new series when he visited WETA Studios in Wellington New Zealand, there are also real sculpted characters of the cast too which were only built as an aid to model the CGI characters. Most of the props are real, only the few that were costly to make were rendered in CGI like city towers and certain terrain but the characters in the actual episodes are indeed CGI. Copyright forebode any use of the designs to the original Thunderbirds machines as well as Barry Gray's music score hence the new designs of the machines and the rearranged music score. The show is privately funded and the only reason the British ITV Studios logo is in the ending credits is because they still own the rights to the franchise. ITV held Gerry Anderson at ransom by disregarding his offer to buy back the rights to his creation so he couldn't do anything further because of ITV's ironfist tactics and they're the soul reason the new series content changed so much. Anyway, I like the show, it's a lighter approach than the original and a pretty good tribute though not as serious.

Im gonna be honest. I like the new one alot. Sure its a bit more catered to kids but its still a good watch. Plus its nice the Thunderbird 1 actually does more than act as a fast bus service for Scott for most episodes XD. Also i actually really like the pod vehicles here and they are now modular instead of purpose built vehicles.

A lot of the changes do seem to have been driven by technological progress, for example the modular pod vehicles, swivel chairs, and having communication equipment more advanced than a radio with a bendy microphone.

Honestly there aren't alot of changes to the overall designs of each thunderbird other than 5 looking very different and 2 looking more square which is fair. Why fix what isn't broken. What they do instead is just add to it. Like Thunderbird 3 having arms is a really interesting one. Hell i actually love the changes to the unicorms with each one haveing differing equipment rather than just a different colour on the sash. The series is no meant to measure up to the old one. It is its own thing that takes inspiration and it does it fine. Plus it always make T2 the best one so all good XD

The reason for having both is that the Amazon version doesn't have what IMO is the best version of the launch music, where Thunderbird 1's engines ignite right on the beat of the music, as if it's part of it, ie they use only the version that was playing during the Thunderbird 1 launch section of this video.

I grew up watching Thunderbirds (since it was repeated on I think BBC 2 or ITV in 1990s), I can honestly say that the new "Thunderbirds...Are Go!" show faithfully reproduces the exact same goosebump feels, with a bit different i.e. Virgil closing the hatch on TB2 after jumping into TB2, Scott being lifted into TB1 in his chair etc.

One thing I noticed with the original series was that launch sequences and generally slower, maybe more realistic but they could sometimes drag on for a very long time. They've tried to make it feel more rushed, action in the newer version.

The Frakes Thunderbirds movie did one thing which I think was good, and that was how they used a mobile platform to move Thunderbird 2 into a launch position, it just seemed odd that T2 didn't seem to have wheels, even though it was mentioned that it did have wheels, but a craft of that size would need huge wheels.

In TAG, Thunderbird 2’s VTOL thrusters are most likely active during these launches, since you can see it hovering a bit above the ground. Most of the time it launches from a rescue, it goes full VTOL, but launching from Tracy Island, it’s main thrusters activate, and then I’d assume the VTOL thrusters shut off as soon as it’s clear of the runway.

CGI seems to be used in the main series purely for the sake of letting things happen faster. The original models had the advantage of being physical and feeling more realistic, but everything took far longer to do. With the CGI there can be a fast pace which is needed for most children's television these days. It also allows for the vehicles to do things they couldn't do as a model.

The originals are so elegant, but that's because the theme of the show as it's alot more classy, the newer ones are more fast paced because they kinda need to act like an actual response unit 😂😂😂. The take offs on the newer Thunderbirds are beautiful though. If I was a set designer on the original Thunderbirds, I'd want alot of screen time to be on the beauty of all those practical effects too.

Who here thinks TAG Thunderbird 2’s canards are way too short for it to fly? It’s canards are pretty large in the original series, but they just don’t look large enough to work in TAG. At least they fixed that plot hole with the pods by making TB2’s canards fold out on the runway. Watch the launch sequence for TB2 again and you’ll see what I mean.

They _never_ looked large enough, even in the original. The launch sequence never made any sense. Without aid of its VTOL thrusters, TB2 should take a nose dive off the front of that ramp.

I personally grew up watching the new one and it’s incredible to be seeing what the old one was like but I’ve gotta admit the character’s designs in the old one kinda scare the hell outta me. I still find it amusing and although I’ve never watched the old one I bet it was phenomenal and quite ahead of it’s time judging by the comments.

I prefer the CGI compared to the original but the original series is still good. What i believe is that the music and puppets in the original looks a bit outdated as we are used to modern CGI and animations which is why most people prefer the new series because then the show would look outdated and the fan rating will go down. I think it's acceptable to have a new series considering that the original was in 1965.

There are 2 tunes from my childhood that send chills through my spine. This intro tune and the one from TinTin. Its so sad that TV Producers wont go the extra mile anymore. Animations are sooo much cheaper then marionettation :(((( I bet that Team America was done with in marionettation as an ommage to Thunderbirds

New one is too clean, too smooth and fluid. Classic is by far more realistic and gives real depth. One example for me is the TB2 takeoff for example, the new one climbs right up in a straight line, but the classic one clears the ramp and bobs down again slightly, giving you that feeling that TB2 really is a very heavy vehicle. Really though, the new one is just too clean to be taken properly.

It's probably a budgetary thing. Puppets can have the flaws of wobbling and practical limitations but has the physical element of natural physics. CGI on the other hand lacks the practical limitations and can be more easily edited but lacks the physical properties which would have to be simulated and computer-generated tweening (motion between keyframes which are set points in, say, raising an arm) tends to be too smooth.

Hard to do some of those effect now that some of the chemicals they used back then are now illegal to use now 😂 makes me love the old show more knowing how bad ass the effects crews were but some of the stories in the new show hoh catch the feels. the models had a better paint job and lighting in the original, in the new one everything seems CGI and even if it's not it's still as insipid as CGI could be. Replacing the puppets with CGI is acceptable, though it would have been better if they were stop motion puppets, but I can understand the budget problems about making a stop motion series.

well not everything is CGI, the characters and vehicles are, and some weather effects, but essentially all the backgorunds and landscapes are actual model sets like the were made and used in the original series, so they essentially did scenery shots first then put CGI over the top, its realy good how they made it, but as you said yes, but with stop motion the budget would be mental and puppets would be out of the question, you could make them modern yet but that would take time to learn and cooperate with, repairs and setup, plus the time it takes to rehearse and film.

The cgi of the characters could have been closer to the original marionette's there was no reason to remodel them the craft don't look as real they are not weathered like the originals were and where is Geoff Tracy? Too many irrelevant changes that make no sense the new series could have been great if a little bit more time and consideration had been applied.

The new series is a superb edition to the Thunderbird mythos. Better, more detailed Craft More use of Thunderbirds 3.4. and 5. Nice addition of Thunderbird Shadow, and much Better use of the Brothers, Lady Penelope, and most importantly Kayo. Still, the Classic Has much better story pacing, and the drama of the original music adds to the Excitement in a way that the New cannot match. (yet)

Other than the characters displaying a greater range of motion, I don't see how the new show improves on much over the original. And the colours of the 1960's version are, to my eyes, more striking and lifelike than the CG images.
