I would get a litterbox for inside - especially since you'll probably want her indoors during the winter and dogs are VERY attracted to eating cat poo because it's high in protein. And if they don't learn when they're young, they won't use the litterbox when they're older. Since you have known issues with predators, I would train her to come back inside at night on a regular basis for Callie's sake. Also, some cats don't really like being outdoor cats so don't be offended if she doesn't want to be an outdoor cat. Unless cats are raised outside by their parents it can be hard for them to learn how to be an outdoor cat and survive more than a few days or weeks because they don't have that feral instinct to survive. As far as the scratching, scratch posts and regular nail trimming can help.

So that's why they eat the cat poop. I solved it with a top entry box. I didn't realize that some cats don't really like being outdoors. SCRATCHING: I agree about the posts. They come in all sizes and shapes such as upright, loungers, etc. Try out different ones and have a bunch available.. I wouldn't be surprised if Philip made his own out of cardboard. Cat tape has been a lifesaver--it comes in rolls or wide-ish sheets and is double-sided sticky. They don't like the feel of sticky--at least for my girl she quickly learned not to scratch the sofa.

With your predators that get the chickens you will likely end up losing the cat if you put it outside. You can train it to be okay outside during the day with yall out there but to always co.e back inside for food and treats and such. If you keep inside you can get rubber tips that cover theor claws so furniture gets protec5

A couple suggestions for little kitty: - Don’t give her a yarn ball (she could get tangled in it). Use little feather toys or mouse stuffies. It will help her hunting skills. - As she grows give her lots of attention so she stays comfortable with humans (even if she is outside). - Since she will be doing her business outside, put some of the soil she can use in her litter box. Help her associate that with going potty outdoors. - Wait till after she is spayed to let her live outside fully. Bring her outside with you during chores to adjust to the outside life. - it is very recommended to spay unless you wouldnt mind a cat colony living on your farm. - A break away collar with a bell could help you keep track of her - Getting her to recognize the sound of a food bag can help her come to you - flea shots and all that health stuff is highly recommended as well to keep her healthy and strong.

Yarn and string is dangerous because cats can/will swallow it and that’s a major surgery (been there 😩)! 2. Feed her before bed so she won’t wake you up for food. 3. Don’t ever “play” with her using your hands/feet etc. she’ll always look at them as prey and will scratch you if you do.4. Get her a playmate she will do better. kittens will scratch they just don't know any better it improves when they get older. my cats are the biggest love bugs and cuddle all the time. To prevent scratches, I highly recommend using a set of nail clipper for small animals to trim Brownie's front and back claws every 2-3 weeks while she is a kitten. I've had cats all my life, we live in the country, and our cats are indoor /outdoor. Routine is actually really important, our cats, Chicken Little and Nala, can go out as much as they want, however they do each have a litterbox indoors. They each have their own food bowls and every night their beds get put up on a high surface with a spray of catnip we also have a cat CD with music that really does put them to sleep. Cats like to sleep higher up, they don't really like being on the floor. God so please do not give them milk as lactose is not good for them there is a special kitten milk but your kitten is old enough to be eating solid food. We do keep them inside at night-time because they can easily get infections from fighting with foxes are other cats out at night. Yes! My aunt had a cat that would eat hair ties and they didn’t know it until she stopped eating and drinking water and had to be rushed to the emergency vert and they did X-rays that showed she had a “mass” in her stomach. They paid to have them go in and remove it... come to find out it was a ball of hair ties that had knotted together over the years because cats’ digestive systems can’t break down hair ties. 🤦🏻♀️ And I have a child hood friend who had a dog that did the same thing with UNDERWEAR. had to have emergency surgery and they thought they were removing a tumor that turned out to be a ball of matted/congealed together underwear... Moral of the stories? Animals are freaking weird and self destructive and picking up after yourself as if your infant can climb on counters and get in hampers could save your pet’s life!
@Dan58192 жыл бұрын
There are also so many feral cats who would love to be barn cats. Places are overrun with them but the pounds just put them down so there are probably places willing to relocate two ferals (two neutered/spayed ferals) who would be great at catching rodents, etc and live in the warm safe barn at night. Of course, they need to be fed like regular pets --- a well-fed feral has more energy to hunt. They do it for amusement and not always food. So if new kitten becomes a nice indoor cat, the option of saving two feral cats is out there. It would save their lives.

I grew up on a farm, and have known and loved a lot of cats in my 32 years. Most of them were indoor / outdoor cats (basically adventurous, sporty pets)Some of them were straight up outdoor cats who lived in the barn. And now as an adult I'm on my second inside-only apartment cat. All of those are valid options, depending on your lifestyle A few things 1) Now that she has been in your house, cuddling on your chest etc., the ship has totally sailed on her being 100% outside. It would be unkind / unrealistic to expect otherwise, because she getting used to high amounts of human contact. Outside cat means outside from day one (in a safe place like an insulated, heated barn or garage). 2 She will always need a litterbox in the house. 3. Cats can love sleeping on the couch, and still be awesome mousers. Just get her dewormed regularly. 4. Totally normal for a new kitten to hide like that. You're not bad parents. Congrats she is a cutie, and eventually you'll lose just as much sleep over her as all your other babies. Cats are sneaky like that.

She's beautiful ❤️ Brownie also needs a litter box. I like the slide litter, because it doesn't stick to the bottom of the litter box. It clumps the pee & the poop, which needs to be scooped daily or every other day. She's to young to be outside!! She would be a snack for a predator!! It would probably be best, to keep her in one of the smaller rooms, with her litter box, bed, food and water. The whole house & the kids might be overwhelming for a baby kitty at first. My cats started out inside only. As they got older or if I adopted a new cat, they started out inside. After about a month, I took them around the house carrying them. Then walking with them, while they are on the ground. I wouldn't let them stay out all night, because of all the predators. Eventually she will be an in & out cat, & catch mice, rats, & moles. Each of my cat's preferred to use the bathroom outside, but that was when they were fully grown. Best wishes 🌿

Our family are dog people that also have cats. Our cats, now, also think they are dogs. They come when you call them, they know "sit", "down", "up" and "off". However, that last one seems to be the one they use their ears to ignore most of the time. Our youngest cat, Chaos, literally SCREAMS at the back door when he wants to go out. He even knows the jingle of his leash and harness and comes running! I LOVE that you go a kitten!!

Kittens don't kill mice--she is just a baby. She will go after mice when she grows up. Just love her. She is too young to "work". Letting her go outside is putting her life at risk if you have foxes, hawks, or coyotes or other predators. She won't live long. Can't you just love her and let her be part of the family? This kind of makes me sad for little Brownie. I hate the idea that you adopted this precious baby, but don't really want her as part of the family and just want to put her to work even though it will be risking her life. I’ve always had dogs but being out of the house working for 13 hours was not right to have a puppy. I pray I can give a dog a good home when I retire but I would never want to upset my cats.

PLEASE don't make her be an outdoor only cat. Cats are part of the family and deserve a clean warm place to sleep and lots of love
@emilyeg322 жыл бұрын
Practice recall training with her, we started ours at 8 weeks. Start by saying ‘Brownie come here’ then give a treat. Do it round the house/different floors and get her to come to you. Once she’s outside you can add a whistle when doing the recall so then she will come running to you when she hears just a whistle. My cats will be 500m away and come running when they hear me whistle. Tractive trackers are another option when she’s outside so she doesn’t get lost xxx

Cats want to be inside with you where it’s warm & safe. Access to the outside during the day, but in the house with you @ night. We currently have 6(!) cats on our 4.5 acres, which is honestly too many cats, but we love each one so much! 🐈

Just a reminder that cats are lactose intolerant. And a litter box is a must. Even for outdoor cats.

I love cats and have had many throughout my life. I have found out the hard way that letting my cats outside have ended in sad tragedies, meaning coyotes, cars, & unknown because they never came back home. I keep my 2 cats indoors now. I trim my cats nails on a regular basis and also brush them. Good idea to take to a Vet, shots, fleas, ear mites, test for feline leukemia. Also, no collar please, they can hang themselves on tree branches. 🐈

I'd still have an indoor litter box .. just in case! You can get one with a flap for a door .

That is so funny how your kitten is trying to warm up Philip. Every cat my husband and I has done the same. They know I love them as I’m a animal lover but my husband isn’t very fond of cats. Like I said every cat we have ever owned is like they know he’s not an cat lover and they are changing his mind. I just love your family and pray for you all the time.

I’ve had many cats over the years. If you plan on having the kids play with the Brownie, so she does scratch badly and ruin furniture, learn to clip her nails from a young age, get her used to having her paws handled, and you going through her fur to look for ticks. The more you do this at a young age, the easier it will be when she is grown up. Most cats don’t like having these things done only because it was not introduced early in life. I don’t want to overload you with advice, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

My kitten used a little box and would catch small lizards but she grew fast and now spends lots of time outdoors (stays in at night) and doesn't use her litter box anymore. She is great for catching mice and birds too and likes bringing them in as gifts. My kitten got out too but she didn't go too far.

I grew up with cats. One thing I’ve noticed is that cats gravitate to people who leave them alone for example Phil. Some cats are cuddley. Some are not. When they are young like Brownie when you first got her, keeping them in a bathroom or a small area like a bedroom is safer. Then gradually let them explore other areas. I also lost one of my cats who crawled into my laundry basket and without knowing I threw clothes on top of him. Looked for him for hours 🤣🤣 Enjoy!

Kittens have very sharp nails. The solution is to trim off the sharp ends. You can use nail clippers, very easy. Brownie is adorable and will be a great addition to your family.

That wee kitten is so adorable. You can give her some snacks to eat and for play anything that squeaks or a bird on a rope to train her and can have mice in toys to show her what a mouse is, but they bring in presents for their owner so be warned. The kids absolutely adore her. Much love and respect from Uk x

She's precious. I love you all. My cat is almost 13 and she just watches a mouse if one gets in my house. And i'm pretty sure she just told me no when I told her to move. Lol.

Kitties hides in places we never imagine lol so cute. My first kitten we thought we lost her too, we were looking everywhere in the house to the point we thought we lost her right out the door and hours later we found her in one of kitchen drawer and it was because I open it to get something and there she was sleeping. I scream and hearing the kids running down the stairs from upstairs happy 😃 and excited.

Get her a collar with a bell. It’s the only way we could ever find our tiny kitten when we first got her. They hide in the craziest of places and it helps so much when trying to find them.

I have 3 indoor outdoor cats, all 3 of them used a litter box until I got them fixed and right after that they all just started going outside. I no longer have a litter box. They stay up all night because their more nocturnal and if you get 2 kittens they will tackle the mice like crazy. All of mine bring me all the dead mice, and get a scrath post and a few toys she can scratch so she doesn't scratch the furniture. When she's been there a few week, slowly take her outside. Get her familiar with the house and where she belongs well before she goes outside

Give her snacks and get her used to the sound of shaking the bag. That way she will come out from hiding. Trust me, I've had cats my whole life. :D

I agree! Most cats are very food motivated! My cat is a hoe for those temptations cat treats 🤣 so I just shake the bag and yell “come here kitty kitty kitty” and he always comes out of nowhere full speed! Lol I had to hide the bag because one time I left them on the table and he literally dragged them off the table and started chewing open the bag 😸

@@Tezz-4444 That's so funny--your cat is a hoe! Mine is too. I fostered a cat for two years and she was super hoe--wherever she was, in a deep sleep, I'd shake the container and she'd coming meowing as she ran. It was hysterical!

So happy she's safe and sound! One tip as she grows older - cats tend to prefer their food and water bowls to be separate from each other, it goes back to their roots in the wild I believe, when they would take their food away from their water source. My cat wouldn't drink inside for so long until I read this tip. Moved her water bowl and bingo! Drank from it from that day on! Good luck and welcome to the cat lovers club 😻💖

Fixed females are the best mousers. Our is sweet, smart , loves humans and very murderous. We keep her in at night so she doesn't kill sleeping birds 😢 but she's out first thing in the morning until about 7pm. We thought she was a scaredy cat at first, but she's just cautious and knows to stay safe from overhead danger. Good luck ❤

Our senior female cat, Oreo Cookie insists on having her own human Dollar general hairbrush, and leg roller massager stick. She loves getting her ears cleaned with Q-tips, or wet wipies wrapped on index finger, and gently rubbed on the inside of her ears. She loves fuzzy bullrush stick toy and any strings. She knows different commands like: come, stay, house, all done, go ahead, ears clean, shampoo wipes, snackies, water, ciao ciao, nap time, and night night for evening sleep time. She's gotten her schedule so it works with mommy me is doing. So blessed she's learned these tricks, and commands from me when we got her at 5wks old. Prayers for cat success🙏🙏🙏🐱👨👩👧👧👫🤰👶🇺🇸🇯🇵🌏🗻🗾

Oh my goodness! This happened to Mark and I when we got our little girl Akira, she hid under our bookcase and I thought we'd lost her, I was devastated. Then she came out hours later like "hey, can you feed me please" haha Mark was also very anti cats, from night 1 she became daddy's little princess, always at his side. So glad Brownie was found and she looks like an amazing addition to your beautiful family. 🤎

I went my entire life not liking cats. My husband brought home 5 new born that lost their mama. We bottle fed babies and I fell head over hills in love. We kept 2 of them and lost them last year. They were about 10 years old. One of the most heart wrenching times of my life.

So funny how Brownie went into the drawer, how did it even get in there?? Was it opened?? Crazy but when I got my kitten I lost it behind my fridge!! I was looking for it for so long too...luckily at the time I lived in a 1200q ft condo so it wasn't that big. It literally somehow went into the tiniest crack & to the back...not even sure how I moved my heavy fridge LOL... Congratulations on getting the cutie...can't wait to see what you all get up to next!! Love you guys!!

You need to start them off with a litter box … then when she gets bigger start putting the box close to the door … then throwthe litter out in the woods. But just remember she’s a baby and a keeper. She is so sweet.
