As a therapist, can I just say that by interviewing professionals like Gabor Maté, Theo is reaching more people and helping people who wouldn’t typically reach out for help understand the impact of trauma more than any therapist, BetterHelp commercial (oh we’ve all seen our fair share of them) or other podcasts and platforms by a million-fold. Bravo Theo and thank you so much for your voice, vulnerability, humor, and genuine want to understand trauma. Not only for your own healing, but for your viewers as well. You are a lovely and cherished human being.

Many kids, even if they don't say it out loud or even take the time to acknowledge it to themselves, subconsciously blame themselves for bad things that happen to them. If I were a child in a place that was constantly being tormented, bombed, and villainized... I'd definitely start to think I was on "the bad side" and that I must be bad in some way. It's heartbreaking to put yourself in their shoes and really think about what their thought processes must be

80, if one is healthy and well, really isn’t that old these days. Having said that the aging is exponential at that age. The difference between 85 and 80 is not the same as between 75 and 70. And by 90 everyone is truly ancient, even if they’re doing great and still have some years to go.

Anyone else find themselves casually reading the comment section while watching/listening to the podcast? Without even knowing it, Theo has cultivated a community amongst his listeners. Yes, he’s a comedian, but he uses his podcast/platform to strip away all ego and lay it all out there with extreme vulnerability. He’s a naturally curious person, and, in sharing his curiosity, it’s like he’s opening up little pockets of support all throughout the comment sections.

I agree. It's funny cus during the podcast Theo says, "If I were a leader", and I thought, he's cultivated a community of people that come from a lot of different walks of life to see things from the same perspective and share a vulnerable moment together. Sounds like a leader to me already.

My mother is a narcissist who suffered from abuse as a child, my father was an addict my whole life. I had a series of stepfathers who ranged from physical abuse, sex addicts, and emotionally unavailable. At age 12 I was dumped on my grandmother who suffered from depression and who was mentally and emotionally abusive. I grew up with the “what is wrong with me” question all the time, I had trouble processing my own emotions and spent most of my adult life in fight or flight mode. When I became a parent myself, i wanted to be different from my own parents but didn’t know HOW. It was conversations like this that have helped me identify what I need to work on and how to be a present, available, patient, and a loving parent. I’m not the perfect parent but these conversations ARE SO IMPORTANT in the work I put into being a parent. Theo is out here doing the lords work!! THANK YOU!!

Your story is so relatable. At 16 I got married was pregnant. My entire motivation was to be the opposite of father and my grandmother (my mother was murdered when o was 9) but my motivations to be better for my children gave me the life I have today. I wouldn’t change a thing! My children made every trauma worth it! I hate to say it but it gave me the drive to make sure no matter what my children never had to experience what I went through

Two amazing human beings right here, the type of men our world desperately needs! My biggest take from Gabor has been that trauma is not only something that happens to you, it can be something that doesn't happen to you; early neglect, rejection and abandonment can have devastating and lifelong consequences, literally affecting the physiology of your brain. But the authentic self is never lost, when you REcover, you reconnect with something that is always there.

Theo has a very unique perspective that makes him so intriguing. I would agree that he’s benefited from seeing how the JRE pioneered podcasting in a way that was open format and allowed the journey to just be. It doesn’t have to be pigeonholed into any one genre.

Dude what a great job this interview. Theo is humble, funny, honest and really got the best out of Dr. Maté. Laughed and cried. Amazing work.

He has made some fantastic contributions to our understanding of addiction, but at the same time he's had a childish degree of arrogant Trump Derangement Syndrome. Pretty pathetic. I was a huge supporter of his for years, but then he went and revealed his true colors. Trump really has been an amazing catalyst to show who people really are underneath all their fancy academic pomp.

Thank you, Theo. I'm not sure if you fully comprehend the impacts of this interview, but it's extraordinary that this specific information is reaching your audience. It has to be one of, if not the most, important interview you've done. Thank you for being so vulnerable & eager to better understand the world we're all living in. L

I’ve seen a wide range of guests on this podcast but I would never expect to see the GOAT of therapy. Gabor Mate is one of if not the best author/ Doctor on trauma and healing. His books should be standard curriculum in all high schools. What a great interview Theo and maestro!

Gabor works in our community here in the Vancouver area and is absolutely the one I ref all my coworkers to when they want to get enlightened on working with individuals with complex trauma. Theo you are a gem for introducing him to a wider audience.❤

1:09:20 I think Theo was tearing up when Dr. Mate was talking about the children in Palestine. Bless his heart. Theo is such a gentle soul. Thank you Theo for all you do. Edit: Please refrain from commenting about which country or ethnicity is responsible. Let's all agree that human suffering is tragic.

He absolutely was. You could tell he really went there for a moment mentally and emotionally. “Imagine some kid over there in Gaza looking up and there’s a bomb and they think man I’m so horrible I deserve to be bombed.” Heartbreaking & horrifying what we human beings will do to our brothers and sisters. All out of fear and hate, for power and control.

Seriously I COULD NOT be more impressed Theo!! I got on here this morning to listen for a laugh and see that you’ve interviewed my all time favorite trauma specialist and was so stunned!! I’m so thankful for you and the vulnerability and bravery it takes to keep growing on the public eye and at the impact you’re having on everyone watching 🤍
