For the Beauty of the Earth," composed by Philip Stopford, is a modern choral arrangement of the classic hymn originally written by Folliott S. Pierpoint in 1864. Stopford’s version beautifully captures the essence of gratitude and reverence for the natural world. His arrangement is known for its lush harmonies, delicate interplay between voices, and the gentle yet powerful emotion it conveys.
This piece is often performed by church choirs and is cherished for its ability to evoke a deep sense of appreciation for the beauty of creation and the blessings of life. The text, which praises the wonders of nature and the joy of human love, is brought to life in Stopford’s sensitive and stirring setting, making it a favourite in contemporary sacred choral music. It was originally intended as a hymn for Holy Communion hence the refrain ‘Christ our God to Thee we raise this our sacrifice of praise.’ Editors of hymn books have modified it in various ways to make it more suitable for general use.
This performance was part of a festive music hour held in October 2017 at the Silvertown Auditorium in Athlone, Cape Town, during the visit of Chief Apostle Jean-Luc Schneider.
