I am a HUGE ArtToolkit fan. I have a lot of these palettes in various sizes and I love them. Their quality is amazing and their pans will never rust. I bought my first ArtToolkit palette years ago and have loved seeing their line grow. I bought my first Rosemary & Co brushes from ArtToolkit in the U.S. about 5 years ago when they started carrying them. It’s great to hear that Rosemary & Co now carries the ArtToolkit palettes for those folks in the UK who want them. P.s. I use a Sharpie to write the name of the paint on the bottom of the pans so I can switch them out or change the order and still know what’s in each pan.

I’m the opposite, I’ve been a fan of Rosemary brushes for years but only recently learned about Art Toolkit. I don’t think any video can capture how charming, fun, streamlined and clever they are, but I tried my best. Yes, I’ll do the Sharpie thing! I usually do that too, but hadn’t yet. 😊

Yes! Though not all eyeshadow palettes open flat. I got the fclub palette (marketed as a watercolor palette) for like $8 a couple of years ago, it's great - and the lid has a lip on all sides, there's no open edge like on card holder palettes.

I echo your sentiments on Sodalite Genuine- it’s the perfect Payne’s Grey. Try mixing Sodalite with your yellows and reds because it makes deep and moody greens and purples.

I love my Art Toolkit palettes, agree wholeheartedly with your review! I have one pocket palette that I have filled with mixing pans. I switch that from bag to bag and take it with me. I find I need a bit more mixing space (especially when using the demi or pocket palette, I’m usually fine with the folio) and an extra pocket palette takes barely any space. I use them all at home or on the go 😊.

I’d suggest watching videos about all of the different gear to see which fits you best before making decisions. Lightweight is best for travel painting, but you can make your own kits too. 😊

those are all just gimmicks, all you need is a metal tin, if you actually want to paint. I like watercolor as a collector, as in making my whole tool kit, but I don't like painting with watercolors. I'm a professional oil painter, so this works for me. everyone needs a hobby after all, and there's only so much you want with a brush.

Hello Leslie, that was a very nice swatching experience. With the very nice flat boxes you got. I liked the hint with the glycerin for the gauche paint. Yes the colour of the cow is the same as in your pallet. I like your choice if you have made good experience with the colour you chose that is fine I have also noticed that I use my favorit colours. Note. I've had MGraham gouache tubes since the 1990's and came back to them a few years ago. They are all perfect after all these years and are now the mainstays to my frequently used gouache palettes. Dry and wet-- although wet some pigments want to mold. I use many brands but m Graham is my velvety favorite. Stay wet palettes need special treatments with m Graham derp blues and umbers especially

Schminke and Holbein both make fantastic gouaches. And I also like their caps better than W&N. I have had a few W&N gouaches dry up because i unknowingly screwed the cap on and it wasn't perfectly aligned. I find it hard to perfectly align their tops. But all three companies make great gouache in my opinion. My fav may be Schminke but it's a pretty tight race.

I am a huge fan of Art Toolkit and love my pocket palette. I am so happy they are collaborating with Rosemary & Co in the UK. I have just ordered a folio palette from them which I have been wanting for ages. Now I am hoping they will also stock the covers as well. I also use Rosemary &Co brushes. I will want to get a travel set to use with the Folio palette. I currently use a water brush with the pocket palette for easy plein air.

I have a couple of these (one the smallest and one the middle size) and also some other units that are similar (but cheaper). I use them all the time when out and about. But what a delight to see I can get the pans and from a business near to me - who makes the best brushes. :) I shall save for the larger palette as well. Thank you so much for this. I have the pocket pallette (the business card size) and LOVE it for traveling!! I put my 3 primary colors in larger pans, then use the smaller pans for additional colors. I also made a color swatch that labrls what the colors are.

I love this style of palette! I have a plastic, much cheaper one by fclub a touch larger than the ArtToolkit folio, it's probably my favourite of my large collection of "uncommon" palettes. I LOVE that the Rosemary & Co catalogue is true to size, it's honestly such a brilliant detail. They've been on my radar for some years now, but I haven't gotten any yet. I'd love some of their travel brushes, they look lovely.

I love Arttoolkit! I have a sweet bright green demi palette from them, as well as the other sizes. They have a great 2nds sale in the Soring. I agree on Quin Burnt Orange...I've never warmed up to it. I prefer Transparent Red Oxide , my favorite color, or an orange leaning Burnt Sienna. I love Jadeite, and their Serpentine as well. I got one of each but my most used is the folio. It is the perfect size to fit in a pouch with a collapsible water cup & pen holding board from Galen Leather (from a journal cover) to hold my brushes and pencil. Paired with an a5 sketchbook I can go anywhere. I love mixing and diluting so I configured it with an xl & standard mixing inserts and my go to 15 colors so I can paint anything. I have barely dabbled in gouache but may eventually set up my pocket for them once I am more comfortable using them. My Demi became on on-the-go eyeshadow case since I only needed 3 and all the “actual” eyeshadow cases I found were “pocket” size and too big for me.

Thanks for your video; you make the art supplies look irresistible. Re gouache -- there's an American company called M. Graham that makes artist quality gouache. This means the pigments are lightfast and there is no chalk or white added. They are very different from designer gouache! I thought you might be curious about them.

I have used gouache in pans for over 25 years. some folks say not to set gouache up in pans, but for me it is the only way i paint. i’ve never used Glycerin or anything else to mix with it. but that looks like a good idea to try. i paint with Schmincke Horadam and Holbein. i like m. graham too. the one paint color that i love but can not set up in a pan is Holbein Opera…. but maybe i will try to set it up with glycerin. thanks for the tip.

Rhodonite Genuine is not lightfast; I believe it was tested by Kimberly Crick. And if you love manganese blue, Holbein makes a lightfast version called Manganese Blue Nova (one of my most favourite colours!). Thanks for sharing! It was fun watching!

Seeing the gauche pans being filled makes me thing that enameled or epoxied magnets or like pins would be popular for artists, if they looked the same as your pans. Could make them in a whole range of colors and they’d always look like fresh new paint. Idk? Might be a cool idea

this was super fun! I just ordered a pocket palette from Art Toolkit today. I can't wait to get it and play with different configurations. I've already been playing around on paper, but I know it will be more fun with the real thing. I debated on which travel brush to get and I went with the Rosemary & Co small dagger. I almost got the pointed round - I should have gotten both of them! I also debated about two palettes, one for watercolor and one for gouache. I think that eradicator might be good with gouache? I prefer a flat with gouache. I've tried numerous brands of gouache: M. Graham (which is fairly local to me), Schmincke, Holbein, W&N, and Daniel Smith. The M. Graham and Schmincke both molded, likely due to the honey they use combined with the humidity where I live. The Holbein is really good and opaque, but crumbles ALOT on a dry palette. And it can be difficult to rewet. W&N was okay, and I initially bought it for the Perylene Green color. But I think my favorite on a dry palette is Daniel Smith. It doesn't crumble. But it doesn't seem quite as opaque. My pocket palette will have transparent watercolors and I plan on carrying a little tin that has buff titanium, gray titanium (this is new to me and I thought I'd try it), lunar black (also new to me and I already love it, even though I've never used black watercolor and didn't think I needed it because I can mix blacks. It granulates in the most beautiful way. I can add it to almost every color and it's lovely. And is way less expensive than their primatek line), and white gouache. I also watch Sarah Burns and I remember at one point she either mentioned or went through a phase of using watercolor with white gouache. I thought I'd try it instead of buying/building two new palettes. But you know, I'll likely place a second order at some point - to try all their palette sizes, build a gouache palette, and get both a pointed round brush and the eradicator. I live in the next state over from their storefront, so may have to take a roadtrip up there someday!

I have several of these pallets and love them! I want you to know that I use jade green and love it! I find it works perfectly for the evergreen trees that I paint. I also reach for it when I paint cypress trees. It’s a beautiful color and one of my favorite. I also love lavender! Especially for shadows. It’s great to add some shade underneath windows and ledges. It’s a beautiful color for wildflower’s too. I’m a member of patreon so I am excited to see your mixing video over there! I’ve never tried rosemary and co but I think I’d better buy a travel set and see how I like them. I love escoda a lot and I’ve always equated rosemary and co to their level of brushes. Yes, the Jadeite is a really lovely convenience colour! I need to remind myself to actually use it instead of mixing my own. 😊 That said, I may be a new convert to Prussian blue… I can get sooo many beautiful mixes with that! I’ll try the lavendar in shadows, but even if I never use it, the colour in my palette brings me so much joy. I’ve finished editing the colour swatching portion this morning and it’s uploading now, so it will be up on Patreon in another hour or so. 💃❤

That tool you are swatching with is the “eradicator” brush. That’s Rosemary and Co.’s scrubber brush. So it will dig in deeper to pigment.

The one thing I’d say about art toolkit is the maintenance. My pans have started to stick to the magnet and rip the magnet so I’m not sure how long they will last. Saying that they are so incredibly convenient that I’m willing to buy them again.

Great questions! The edges do not feel sharp to me. They’re all super lightweight, even when filled. It’s a totally different experience to using my other metal palettes.

The Daniel Smith Manganese Blue Hue is very lightfast, you can test it if you like (I have) but so has Kimberly Crick, who's basically the queen of lightfastness, and you can find her results on her channel and/or blog. 😊 (I'd test the Amethyst though, because I've heard people say it doesn't hold up so well. Can't remember where I found it anymore!)

I made dried gouache palette using watercolor blending medium. Some colors still crack, literally crumbled, such as cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue. Other colors like cobalt turquoise, naples yellow, remains ok.

@@LeslieStroz PO48 is a pigment that I love and see so much potential. Unfortunately, it is not available where I live and customs are too much of a hassle to get it from abroad. I managed to get paints past customs only once. That is why I am very careful about using it.

Only one store sells some van Gogh open stock and another sells some Daler Rowney Aquafine and a third recently stocked Schmincke.The Schmincke is over the top expensive. Horadam is twice the price of Jackson’s!! I didn’t like the Aquafine at all, so I am using them for practice. Their Indian Yellow is PY153, though, that was rather lucky. Van Gogh is nice, but not as nice as professional and handmade paints. van Gogh paints are less pigmented. I’d like to try Rembrandt one day, though.

@@awatercolourist It's always so good to see you too!! ☺️😄 That is SUCH a bummer! And Schminke sounds horrifically expensive! I was hoping you'd say that you had access to Rembrandt, they have a nice PO48! Stroke of luck with the PY153 though! I inherited a student grade paint set, and one of those colours is a PY153, am looking forward to trying that one out. And I have the Daler Rowney Gamboge Hue mix, from before they changed the formula. That one glows! Happy for you that you found one!

I have a yellow question. What is your go to primary yellow? Do you prefer a cool lemon and a warm lemon? And if so what is your warm yellow? Hansa Yellow Medium? Or another color or brand?

When I make my color chart I cover it with clear packing tape and then tape it to the top of the lid of my toolkits. Then I don’t have a loose sheet to lose or put somewhere..

Can you update on how the pans in the little gouache palette are holding up? Have any of the colors cracked and fallen out? I know the glycerin is supposed to help but it would be nice to know if it really does! Also, how does glycerin affect the re-wetability of the paint? Does it still act like gouache or does it make it "thinner" like watercolor? Sorry for all the question but I am a gouache newb! Thanks so much!

So far all is holding up, but it’s only been a few days. A few colours are a bit cracked, but the glycerin has kept them so they aren’t in danger of falling out. From the mixing I’ve done so far I don’t think it’s changed the paint. So far so good! 😊

So far so good! There is cracking but it’s not flaking (if that makes sense). The gelatin has kept it “wet” enough to be in one piece. I’ll give an update on that after I’ve used it for awhile. 😊

I m relatively new to watercolor, new in that I’ve not not been able compare multiple brands of the same color EXCEPT Prussian Blue leard in comes in PD (red) And PB (green) . Perhaps your s is one or the other and not the same as the artist to which you compare your mixes. I’m thinking the are similar red/ green versions of Phthalo blue, maybe…..? These palettes look great. Mary

No. I can’t tell if it’s a sticker or something else, but it’s not ceramic. It works well though. I’ve been using them this week and any staining I get (I use staining colours!) has been pretty easy to remove with a vinyl eraser.

How did you make your swatch cards? Pans arranged on the printer? Pray tell!

I cut some cotton watercolour paper paper to fit into the pans first (which makes them a bit smaller than the actual pans). Then I just sketched the pans in and tried to make sure they were spaced evenly and looked like the palettes. After that I used a fineliner to ink them, adding a drop shadow on the bottom and right of each pan. Hope that helps! 😊

@@LeslieStroz have you ever tied out Viviva ColourSheets ? They are made in India and very concentrated watercolours. I always carry them in my journal as they are so pigmented. P.S. I love Rosemary brushes, I am from the UK yet live in France atm and they are my preferred travel brushes by far.
