A Sam'sTrains video that was released on my birthday, yesterday and I am glad I am able to watch it this morning, so thank you very much, Sam. The J72 is definitely a lovely locomotive, however, there is one preserved which was on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, as it was named 'Joem' for many years.

Hello Sam, that's a excellent review on the new Bachmann NER E1/J72 in NER Green Livery. Even though her side tanks and boiler are plastic, the paintwork on her wheels aren't perfect, but it's still a beautiful model after all, her running performance is great after running in of course and her strength is great. I cannot wait to get my hands on this model very soon. Once again, an excellent review. 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 10/10 😉

The issue with the axles not being painted may be something to do with the fact Bachmann initially fitted these with the wrong wheels (14 spokes instead of 12) and had to replace them in the first batch as soon as they landed in the UK. This has resulted in some having running issues on top of slight issues with the wheel decoration.

I've got 6 of the older model. 1 mainline in need of wheels, 1 bachmann in need of a motor brush, and 4 working bachmann ones. They do perform very well, but the detail on this new one looks fantastic, and the DCC compatibility is much improved (I'm gonna have a nightmare fitting chips to my 6 J72s...)

Nice video Sam , I have got the black LNER one with the red lining , straight out of the box it was very noisy but after lubricating the axles and coupling rods it ran almost silently , it also crawls perfectly . The lights can be push fitted on to the lamp irons and be removed without leaving a mark which is a good feature . What I was not impressed with was Rails customer service , the loco came into stock with them on the 12th December , by the 18th December I had heard so I emailed them to ask what was happening , no reply . By this time another Bachmann loco I had on order had also come into stock a class 22 . On the 28th December I rang them and the person I spoke really couldn't have cared less , he seemed to take great delight in telling me I would not get delivery until after the new year. I said i didn't like his attitude and would cancel the order , his reply was I could do what I liked ! Rails must be doing really well if they don't need a £220 order . I then ordered online the two locos from Kernow who delivered them in 24hrs . David
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot mate - glad to hear you managed to quieten yours down! I've had that with Rails before - some quite slow deliveries in the past, but the last few I've received were much more timely. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them - might be worth dropping them an email explaining what happened - I doubt rudeness of that kind is endorsed by management! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

WOW, fantastic & excellent review Sam of the new Bachmann NER E1/J72 in beautiful apple green livery 👍👍 Now this is also the one that I like to get because of this livery, but I’m might get the LNER black livery one as I like the red rods on the driving wheels. It’s a shame that you notice a few details like axles are not painted as well the nicks on the running board, but the model is excellent with amazing details and I find it better than the old one as it has a BR number plate on the smoke box door. I hope your next Bachmann tank engine will be 9400 Class Pannier tank next as that will be the next big thing or the new Midland tanks in Midland red livery.

Looking at this video again, I've noticed that when crawling in reverse it was stopping at the same position of the wheels, this is indicating that something is catching in the mechanism somewhere. Maybe a high spot or a jagged edge on the linkage. I've had this before on other locos.

The reason for the speaker would be because it is often ard to fit speakers in, if its already fitted you dont have to fit (Potentially cutting away at the body).Lots of manufacturers are strarting to pre fit speakers.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
I agree it would definitely make sound fitting easier - but the question is whether it's fair to ask non-dcc modellers to pay for DCC equipment - it's not terribly difficult to fit speakers! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I have just seen then 'new' Bachmann J72 and had the opportunity to compare it to my original Palitoy "Mainline" model. I agree with your 'noise level' comments are correct and the amount of detail on the newer model, while higher in standard and quality, is somewhat hampered in the fact that the loco has no fly wheel (which, i believe, would improve its performance immensely) and the subtle demand to go DCC is also a hindrance to those of us who prefer the 12,000 mVolts systems. I do recall that the standards of detail on the Palitoy offering was astonishing in its time and, while the newer model has significant improvements on this level, the steps are not so astounding when compared to what has come before. Performance, as mentioned is again an issue as my layout is specifically "industrial" so slow running and 'crawl' are important. I would like to see this new Bachmann offering being tested and run in DCC for comparison. Otherwise, another very clear, entertaining and valuable addition to your already impressive line up of video reviews. Thank you.

Thanks for that Frank, glad you could corroborate that. Yes the absence of flywheel is a shame too, given the price! Yes indeed - the mainline offering was outstanding at the time, no doubt! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

the speaker was a big factor in it's purchase for us. it gives that opportunity to upgrade in the future. the plan is to upgrade all loco's to sound in the future but doing it his way means we can at least get the loco, run is non sound with a dcc chip and upgrade in the future

The Palitoy J72 was the first engine I bought as a young adult. Cost in 1978? Eight pounds! As a student I had to save up for it! Looked great but having a split chassis didn't run well after a year or so. A window cleaner saw it running on my table, threw open the window and asked if that was a J72. He'd fired them in his youth in Hull. I would love to buy this version but not at that price.

Blimey, crazy times - if only we saw prices like that today!! That's very cool too - bet the window cleaner loved that! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Been looking forward to your review. I preordered a LNER J72 in March cost £106. I also run on DC. I’m on my second, first one was very noisy like a intermittent scraping sound, nearly a chuff chuff!. Slow speed was hopeless. Got a replacement last week noise slightly better slow speed similar to yours, not good for shunting. Hornby J50 100% better at £65. Evan my 1980’s J52 performs better. Supplier looking into problem waiting for a possible third model. Great looking loco such a shame can’t carry out its design duties. Don’t think I’ll be preordering again, I’ll wait for your reviews.

Thanks a lot Brian - sorry to hear the early one was no good - the performance certainly isn't amazing, that's very true. Absolutely - the J50 was a much better model for the money, and about twice as heavy! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Coreless motor is an interesting choice and I don't really understand it. Probably the reasoning behind the choice is the increased power, but for me, it does not seem a good use for a coreless motor. Nice looking engine though, I like the firebox glow and as I am now all DCC it would work very nicely. I must say do like the DCC sound, particulary the sound of the horn.

Atlas Model Railroad have begun installing speakers in both their DC and DCC/sound N scale North American diesel models. I presume the cost difference between leaving them in and removing them is negligible. That might be the case with this Bachmann (as well as the built-in upsell). I use ESU LokSound decoders sparingly on my fleet. IMHO they are the best sound decoders on the market but are quite expensive. Many of the rest of my N scale locos are fitted with silent DCC or came from the factory with sound.

Hi sam I recently ordered the Bachmann Collectors Club j72 and im wondering what can be the main problems with them and with a coreless motor. Thank you.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 3 жыл бұрын
You've just got to watch which controller you use - so no feedback controllers. They also tend to overheat, so be careful about overloading the loco. Shouldn't be too much of an issue with this as it's pretty small and has no traction tyres! Happy New Year - Sam :)

I’ve had loads of problems with Bachmanns coreless 03. Poor running at certain speeds and really jerky movement when using DCC. For instance, it ‘jumps’ about an inch after coming to a halt. Tried five all had issues. I’m staying away from coreless from now on.

Great video Sam I have purchased the late crest version of this locomotive and I am very pleased with it. However I must agree with you as far as pricing is concerned. I operate an analogue layout, so have no interest in the a speaker being fitted. There should have been an alternative non speaker version produced. I think this is the way Bachmann appears to be going on future releases, examples being the forthcoming releases of 94xx pannier tank and the LNER V2. Best wishes. Brian

Hi Sam. Your knowledge is quite extensive which is great. Can you please help me understand what a feedback controller is? Cheers mate. Love your work.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 4 жыл бұрын
He Robert, thanks a lot for your kind words - the best definition is one I found on the Hornby forum: "Feedback controllers monitor the back EMF (Electro Motive Force) from the motor and vary the voltage supplied to the track in an attempt to keep the loco moving at the set speed, adjusting for climbs, descents and load etc. Rather like cruise control on a car." Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I know you've explained why you can't put more scenery on your layout, but have you considered cutting up a grass mat to put between the rails and the carpet?
