The New Balance FuelCell Rebel has carved a niche as a lightweight, versatile trainer for tempo runs and peppy days out on the roads. The v4 arrives with subtle tweaks, promising the same snappy and fun ride with a touch more stability through that new girthy midsole. Did they nail it? Let's dissect the shoe from top to bottom:
Upper: First things first, the v4 upper is offering a paper-thin engineered mesh. It's breathable through that toebox and holds the foot securely with a fresh new Formafit design, though some might miss the sock-like feel of the previous version. The midfoot gets snugged by a supportive wrap that integrates seamlessly with the laces, offering a personalized fit without feeling constricting. The heel collar is the first major change from the v3 to the v4. New Balance dropped the elf heel or heel flare, sad day. I'm not sure why they did this but I did experience a little bit of rubbing on my Achilles tendon with the new design to the heel counter in the New Balance Rebel v4.
Midsole: Ah, the FuelCell magic returneth. This iteration retains the responsive, bouncy FuelCell foam, but with a firmer core injected through the midfoot, but still sporting a 31 on the shore C durometer reading, up just 3 points from the v3. This adds a touch of structure compared to the v3, translating to improved stability without sacrificing the springy feel. You'll still love the bouncy midsole geometry that propels your foot forward with each stride, making those tempo miles feel effortless. The official stack height strikes a perfect balance between responsiveness and cushioning, making it suitable for a variety of paces and distances.
Outsole: New Balance opted for a more durable rubber outsole this time around, and bumped up the width of the heel by 10 mm, adding to more stability. While it might not be the grippiest on slick surfaces, it'll withstand the miles without wearing down prematurely. The strategic placement of the rubber ensures good traction on dry roads and gravel paths, while also shedding weight where it's not needed.
Verdict: The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is a solid evolution of a beloved shoe by countless marathon and road runners around the world. It retains the snappy, comfortable ride that made the v3 a favorite, but adds a touch of structure that makes it feel more versatile and stable. While some might miss the sock-like upper of the previous version, the overall package remains a fantastic choice for tempo runs, faster training days, and even long runs if you prefer a softer landing and have strong feet to get you through. If you're looking for a lightweight, cushioned trainer that delivers both pep and support, the Rebel v4 is definitely worth a try, especially at 6.7 oz in US men's sizing.
Bonus points from Seth DeMoor:
The updated lacing system allows for a more precise fit, ensuring your foot stays locked in throughout your run. The overall weight remains impressively light (dropped a little) making the Rebel v4 a true joy to pick up the pace in. Final thoughts: The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 isn't a radical reinvention, but it's a refinement that makes an already great shoe even better for those who need a little giddy up and guidance through their gait cycle. With its comfortable, snappy ride, improved stability, and stylish looks, it's a surefire contender for your tempo day go-to.
I hope this detailed full review video gives you a good sense of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4. Remember, your own experience might vary depending on your individual preferences and running style. But hey, that's what test runs are for! Happy running DGR!

New balance is my new Nike. I bought 4 pairs of NB in 2023. The more trail v3, the propel v4 and two pairs of the rebel v3. In fact I bought the second pair of the rebel just after running 10km with the first pair. It is much fun running in it

Great to see the latest Rebel being reviewed! I'm STILL trying to wear out the two pairs of the v2 that I have, so it'll most likely be that by the time that happens, the v3 will be a thing of the past and this may be my next Rebel purchase. Shame to see the heel flare has gone but I'm loving the redesigned midsole. I have a feeling this year could be good for NB, pics of their new releases are emerging and I'm excited!!

I recently bought the V3s and ran 66 miles in them so far. I’ve been running in max stack shoes (SC Trainer v1, Nimbus 25) and the Rebel was refreshing to run in. Mostly running 5-mile daily runs in them. The only downsides are that I don’t like them for recovery runs and I wouldn’t take them over 6 miles. The changes in the V4 looks to remedy those downsides and at $140, I’d probably pick these up when I retire my V3s. Thanks for the review, Seth! Great to have you and your reviews back on KZbin.

since getting into running a few years ago now, the Rebel V2 was my first real running shoe, purchased from a local running story, I hammered 200 miles or so on them, and then moved to the V3, which I fell in love with, put 330 miles on those, and then now tried a Saucony Kinvara 14, as soon as these are burned up, I will be right back into the new V4, which will be in spring time, which will be when this thing is on the shelves, so I can't wait.

V3 is my favorite (added bonus, they are wearable as casual sneakers when traveling or even going to work). Also loved V1 and V2, however V2 just torn apart in just over 300km. From the review of V4 seems like its less of what I like, specifically due to this "extra stability" I don't need.

I have v1, 2 and 3. The v1 upper still lasts, though the rubber outsole nubs has flatten but still grippy on warm/hot tarmac. mine at 600km. the v2 upper of mine literally torn at the lateral side of my toes. it has been sent to recycle bin at 630km. My v3 is only at 270km currently (i somehow prioritized using my novablast3 more). That v4 looks wild. may consider giving it a shot

QOD: I bought the Rebel V3 to use as my daily trainer and used for all types of runs: daily (moderate), tempo, long (up to 12 miles), and even recovery. I loved the shoe, but sadly had to retire them after 325 miles after a PF issue in my right foot devolved after an 8 mile run in the shoe. The Rebel still had plenty of life left on the outsole and was still bouncy. I feel my PF started flaring because the shoe could’ve been a half size larger than I needed.

Beginner runner here, I bought a pair of Rebel V3 without actually understanding what kind of shoe I was purchasing because it looked way cooler as a casual shoe compared to others in the NB lineup. As a trainning shoe I know now that I should have gone with a pair of 880s or 1080s but the V3s aren't bad anyway. When running, they felt wobbly in the heel at first so you kind of have to learn to "ride" them but you can get used to the way the shoe runs. I am super excited for V4 because it changes the heel. Will definitely buy a pair.
@dnashj33
@dnashj33 27 күн бұрын
No, the heel is very wobbly (unstable), mainly because the foam is so squishy and there is not as much foam under the heel compared to other shoes. They flare outward a bit, to provide more stability...not simply for aesthetics. Look at the Rebel V4...instead of an outward flare under the heel, it flares INWARDLY = much less stability. I never noticed this issue in a shoe before. It's a bad design and I hope NB fixes it for V5, because overall, it's a really good daily trainer.

I've the V2 and it's a lively and fun shoes to run especially when they are new, however the fuelcell foam in rebel is not long lasting mine over 500K can easily feel the foam bouncyness deteriorated so I can only use it for shorter run definitely less than 10K and not LSD for sure.

NB Rebels are my all-time favorites. But my v2 and v3s both had a feature where their soft exposed midsoles swallowed up little stones to a point where I could feel them under my heal. v4 looks to have less exposed midsole under heel.

Hi from singapore...yes hot and humid. Got the rebels...v1,v2,v3... V1- speed intervals...really great for speed though need strong feets. V2- still speed intervals...fast...probably faster then streakfly...near very near to vf3 but vf2 wins.(but yes don use plate for trainings) V3- use it for easy and slow LSD...up to 30km. Jus was disappointed it not as fast as v1 and v2 but able to use in the hm range or slightly beyond. V4- guess i wont b using rebel for speed intervals anymore. But its kinda looks similiar to another brand of shoe shoes😅 which i wont mention and rebel v4 is cheaper. I will use t for easy run and LSD as per V3. Not sure still i wear it...i think it wont b fast as stability and speed usually don gel together i assume?

Good review. Even if it's a little firmer than the 3, I don't imagine there is any non-plated trainer that is softer. I'm curious why your durability score was 6. I figure with a Peba blend and a little more structure, this shoe might last a little longer. Biggest knock on all lightweight tempo shoes (at least the non plated variety), even superstars like the Hoka Mach: they just aren't that durable because there is so little there.

I just bought the V4 (being a Brooks guy for the most part), but I am about to take it back. Why? Because the massive lack of rubber outsole between the mid-foot to the heel (where most of the foot contacts the road) means I am running mostly on midsole foam, where it can easily get chewed up by gravel (large or small) and asphalt. I can understand a small amount of midsole exposure, but there is more midsole area contacting the road than outsole material. That is the whole point of the outsole...to provide a tougher, more wear-resistant barrier. New Balance said "F*k It, we''ll save a little bit of weight and $$$ by skimping big on the rubber outsole." Bad idea. At first, it was just a little bit of an issue, but the more I thought about it, the bigger of a problem I had with it. Plus, I have seen a number of reviews where they had problems with the heel rubbing. This is never an issue with a Brooks shoe. That is why I decided to just buy a pair of Glycerin 21's, instead. The Rebel 4 is a great shoe, but these 2 things (and instability in the heel...when just walking around, if you lean back even a little on your heel, it caves in way too much and can throw you off balance), but it needs more attention in these areas before I will attempt to buy a pair.

Seems like that's exactly how it is with the latest updated. And I think it's for the better. They obviously had to make room for the updated Pacer. BTW I also enjoy the first Pacer.

In last year v2s were insane value for money option. Fast and fun. And because i bought them for less than 50 bucks I don't mind their biggest flaw which is durability. Especially the outsole rubber wears incredibly quickly. I also tried v3s and I like the additional cushioning under the forefoot but they lost some uniqueness. For me with that version they started to feel like a little bit less refined hoka mach 4. A little bit less bouncy. A little bit less comfy, made out of cheaper materials and less attractive ;) And probably even less durable. I wonder if new Rebels have more durable rubber compound because I like the new look.

He mentioned in the SC Trainer 2 review that he's dialing in his scores and an 8 shoe will now have to be pretty incredible.

It looks a lot like the Novablast and I’m praying NB releases it in WIDE! Something ASICS hasn’t done to my knowledge. Here’s to being excited for equality for fat feet lol

I differ from Seth. I like girth lots of juicy girthness in my shoe. The girthier the better.

I have all the Rebels 1-3. Seems like New Balance is slowly trying to destroy its wonderful “fast daily” shoe that debuted into a special well-loved niche.

I am very upset with Hoka. They had one of the absolute best shoes ever with the Hoka mach five, with a huge fan base. The Mach 6 has just came out and they did a switch up on all of us loyal mach fans. The shoe is now another but Clifton with a different foam. And unfortunately, would you believe they have added a whopping eight millimeters to the stack. The shoe has nothing to do with the original mach series as is only 2mm difference from the Clifton's, give or take. What on earth? Hoka now have nothing for those of us who like a bit of a lower stack and a bit of flexibility without plates, etc. These Rebel v4 sneakers Seem to be a very good replacement, particularly with the stack height and drop, with only 1mm difference in the drop. I know the Hoka Mac 5 was one of your favourite shoes also, so so how would you compare these rebel v 4 to the Hoka mach five? Hoka have lost my business now and im thinking of getting these......

I've had the v2 and v3... the v2 fell apart way too fast. I ended up sizing up by half a size in the v3 and those have been workout put amazingly... one of my favorite shoes. I groaned when I saw a picture of the v4 because 1) it looks way different and so potentially ruining the magic it was 2) its super ugly. Haha. Here's to v3 on clearance!

Yup... Saw the V3 at one of my local Marshall's last Friday. $59.99 I've been lucky with NB and Marshalls these past couple of month. SC Elite V3 and More V4 for $69.99 each. Saw the SC trainer V1 as well for that price but not in my size.
