Damian fixes on of his biggest annoyances of the Merry Fisher 895 - the battery set-up. In this video we upgrade our boat's battery system from the factory setup to a more robust and efficient configuration. With Northside Marine doing the work we change out to a starter batteries for each motor and a whopping 240 amp-hours of AGM batteries for our house setup.

A very powerful power-bank Damien! Good to have separated the house battery from starting duties and for each engine to have their own battery too! Maybe something I might consider in the future. Especially if we have longer periods at anchor or on a buoy compared to a visitor berth at a marina with shore power. Looking forward to some more boat videos now your summer is fast approaching. You lucky people! Set up the dehumidifier and electric heaters in the cabins yesterday. Plus drained the FW tank and added antifreeze on my boat! Something you two do not have to bother about!

Yes I'm happy to get the batteries sorted out. Winterising a boat sounds like a horrible thing to do. Yes very keen to get out. We have had fairly poor weather, lots of wind, for the last few weeks. Hoping to get out soon.

Hi I set up my battery banks using 2 x 200 AMP/H Enerdrive Batteries, having them separate from the standard factory AGM cranking batteries. We have two Enerdrive DC to DC chargers that take power from the Mercury twins and charge the Lithium bank and the cranking batteries. (same applies when on shore power charging both banks through the onboard Battery Charger - Cristec) The benefit of using the DC to DC chargers is that you can control how 'greedy' the Lithium's are and how much you want to feed them. We have heaps of power and using our Enerdrive battery can use the coffee machine and for short periods even the AC unit factory fitted to our boat. Agree our set up is a more complex than yours and takes up the same amount of space but we have all that additional power at least 350 to 400 amp/h to use when we stay for longer periods in Rottnest island. It will be interesting to monitor the pros and conns of each set up ? Cheers Sam

Great improvement separating the house from the start batteries. The aux charging circuit on the Yamaha engines is great. The aux charges the three 90 Ah house batteries on my Ranger Tug 25. I agree with you that lithium is all the rage now and would have made your project more complicated. But from your previous vids you have a good understanding of your power usage for overnights and know how to manage it. You’ll do fine with this setup. One possible suggestion is trying to add more solar charging capacity so you can stay longer at anchor without needing to run the engines to recharge house batteries.

Thanks for your comment. The battery setup has worked well so far. The Aux charging is great and linking it from both engines means there is significant amps flowing !! Always work on the keep it simple stupid (kiss) principal ! Thanks again

Interesting! Damien, did I hallucinate or didn't you previously add a 300 AH house bank? If so, must have missed where you chucked it. About that "50% rule: Given how you use your boat - usually plugged in, only occasional 1-2-3 day trips, that 'rule' which everyone parrots is hardly iron clad for you. That 'rule' is based on a battery mfgr's estimate of how many FULL cycles can be delivered, each one to 50% discharge level, before the battery capacity is reduced by X%. (That X% varies from 20% to 50%, depending on the mfgr). Your trip today is a good illustration why this 'rule' isn't critical: Overnight, you used ~17% (40 AH) of your house bank's capacity. You could have had 3 similar overnights to reach 1 full cycle of use on the house bank. Other battery failure issues aside, it's going to take you many years at your current usage level before significant degrading of that bank will occur. My point: If you occasionally drop to e.g. 30% remaining capacity on the house bank due to an extended time on the hook, both how and how long you use Antoinette isn't going to be significantly affected. Wish the 'experts' spent as much time pointing out how & when to water those AGM/wet cell batteries and occasionally wiping down the cables and protecting the terminals. Those things will contribute more in the short term to battery performance and battery health. And FWIW - again, for your style of use - IMO you did exactly the right thing to go AGM rather than Lithium. (Sorry for the text wall).

Hahaha no hallucination I DID have a big battery but it died very suddenly. I believe because even though I joined the battery banks it was outputting cranking amps to start the engine - not so good for an AGM battery. This is the main reason for the re-wiring. Thanks for the additional input and support my decision for AGM!

@@TheRudder Interesting you thought your large AGM battery was being killed by engine starts. We're getting close to buying a 795 - Ft. Lauderdale USA boat show in a few days - and on Jeanneau's spec sheets they state house and engine banks are both AGM. Given your low level of boat use & the failure symptom, I'd bet it suffered an internal short - aka: manufacturing fault. FYI Jeanneau is now bringing in 695 & 795 single engine models with Yamaha's Helm Master. 'Skyhook' type control settings and all the typical autopilot features. Marketing-wise, a Small Boat/Big Features approach for us Americans, I guess.

Hi Jack, I could well have been a manufacture fault but it was just out of warranty :( It will be interesting to see how they wire and split the house and engine batteries up. Yes everyone is getting Helm Master now. such a cool feature but costs a lot to retro fit! Thanks

Hi Damien, is the solar panel charging all 4 batteries now? Or just the house batteries? Are you planing on heating your hot water tank? Thanks lee
@TheRudder
@TheRudder 8 ай бұрын
Hi Lee, should have mentioned that, the solar is ONLY powering the house batteries. Two difficult to spit the voltage requirements between the different batteries. The house batteries do power the hot water system, I converted my system to 12V -kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnjGooycpJalj7c

Hi Damien, as an 895 owner with the factory less-than-ideal battery setup, I share your sentiments, and intend to do something very similar to your description here. I am not sure what you mean by “…house bank being charged by the accessory/auxiliary side of the engines..” I’m not familiar with an “auxiliary side”? Each engine only has one alternator? I was intending to install a voltage sensitive relay (VSR) between starters and house, so that the engines(s) charged the starters first, then the house bank. I think this is common, and achieves what you have. Maybe you have a VSR also? I’m just asking to improve my understanding before I modify my setup :)

Hi Phillip, sorry if I wasn't clear, thanks for the feedback. I totally share your sentiment that the batteries are poorly wired from the factory. The Yamaha alternator has two outputs, the second one being aux power. So the aux from BOTH engines go to the House bank, and the main alternator output goes to each starter battery (does that make sense). No VSR in the system. Northside marine did the electrical work. I hope that helps. Damian

@@TheRudder Well I’ve learnt something - thanks! I have Mercurys, and I suspect that they don’t have that dual charging/output capability. I will find out, because it would make house bank charging easier.
