I stopped doing illustrations for Catalyst Game Labs right when they started designing these boxed sets. It was around that time they got back the right to use the unseen mechs. It makes me very happy to know the unseen mechs are now allowed in the artwork. Thanks for the video!

Back in the day the Battlemaster was the one and only well there was that football with legs called a Stalker so give it the Respect it has earned. It Also holds a special place in my heart as we named Our M1A1 back in the 1st Gulf War the Battlemaster Bravo Company 2 Btn. 34 Armored Rgt. 1Bde. 1 Inf. Div. The BIG RED ONE. So the may be newer and meaner Assaults but none that can claim to be the Master of Battle.

Cool detail about revised beginner box.... With the Vindicator it removes all redundancy. Not just the mechs, but pilots, even terrain tiles. They could easily have printed the exact same terrain tile sheet for both boxes. No one would think less of them and people would be glad to have two sheets of both.... But no, they go out of their way to print DIFFERENT terrain tiles for both boxes... So if you end up with both ... It's kinda turns the main box set into a deluxe version. You get 50% more map, 2 more mechs, extra terrain tiles, all different, nothing redundant. Additionally, the mechs in the beginner box, Thunderbolt and Locus, that you have to use standies for.... Are included in main box as minis, giving you minis for all four beginner box mechs.. So each box supplements the other, each box making the other a bit better regardless of which rules you use. It's a tiny but cool detail. If you lay $25 for the beginner box and move on to the main box, you are still happy to have the beginner box contents. Almost zero redundancy (inner sphere map and some overlapping fluff text). So if you do a beginner box to main box progression, you are rewarded for having both, not punished and debuting redundant items when you upgrade. Clever. And has to be intention. It's why they revised with a Vindicator instead of a redundant Wolverine. It's why the terrain is different between them. Someone at Catalyst wanted to be certain we'd be happy to have both boxes if we ended up with both boxes. A small but cool detail. It took effort and you don't notice it right away. But good on them. Also,.the miniature quality in the new box sets is BETTER than anything I remember seeing in it's late 80s/early 90s glory days. That's the standard mini included in the box set. And the quality is outstanding. I assume Iron Wind Metals are mind blowing, because the default plastic from Catalyst set a crazy high bar for quality and detail. If you want to make/print mechs for BattleTech, they'd better be outstanding or their is no point. The current plastic minis from Catalyst are simply badass. My spit take review of both? Other companies should take notes, THIS is how good box sets are done. Fantastic quality from terrain tiles to Mechs. Great choices of inclusion. The beginner box is a fantastic onramp to the game for $25... And then serves to supplement and enhance the main box. And they go further.... Of course ... And include all the alpha strike data you need so these boxes can then supplement THAT box if you get it. Again, they didn't have to integrate them this well and with this much effort and forethought.... But they did, and it was done for customer benefit. This is how box sets should be if intent is to get players into the game (with an optional beginner step in this case). Even the quick reference sheet.... Is nice thick cardboard. Every little detail seems right to me. My box even had a $20 off anything from the Catalyst store. Up to $20? Free, enjoy. $30 like I'm buying $20 off. As welcome to the game boxes go, A+, example of how to do it right. Catalyst did well here. It's good times to be a BattleTech player. Catalyst is obviously not charity, they are trying to make a buck. But I get the impression they actually like this game, and the customers that play it. The main box isn't cheap even if the beginner box is.... But the contents and quality make it a good value. Better than other basic boxes for other games. Bang for buck is killer, and catalyst seems determined to up the quality standard from even the old glory days. It feels like BattleTech done right.

I just got the ne boxed sets and the sculpts are awesome. I startet Battletech in the early 90s and played with paper-standees. Metal miniatures were too expensive for my budget and the first plastic minis were very crappy (even when I was 13 years old and loved everything about Battletech I could see that). The last base-set (IntroductorySet was it called?) still did not get proportions right. I think finally they hit the right spot with plastic mechs...

A few things... 1. MegaMekLab is more complete than SSW and still in active development. 2. SSW has apparently reentered active development under a new dev on github. 3. The previous boxset with the Atlas on the cover included 26 minis (old sculpts) of decent quality for the same retail price of 59.99 and also included basic construction rules. 4. Hope you guys pitched in for rhe Clan Invasion kickstarter

I wish we would have gotten some additional models to buy to play with these sets, advanced rulebooks, etc. I saw theres a kickstarter now, but I feel most people will have given up by the time it's ever out. Great video though guys.

Some days ago I had a conversation about BattleTech and had to Google some pictures to explain the game.... Once I saw the new Box set, I had to order it. And an hour later, I backed the Kickstarter for the Clan Invasion box... Spend some more than planed there. "200 euros for a board game box?" my girlfriend asked. I said: "BattleTech!" And she just started smiling again :-)
