I have enjoyed your channel for some time now. BTW, my wife, daughter and I have been "foldies" for a few years now. I cannot recommend folding bikes enough. We not only use them almost every day here in sunny California, but we travel internationally and, with just a little disassembly, put our folding bikes in checked luggage suitcases for travel. We therefore avoid airline bike fees and charges. They are a great way get around and have adventures otherwise not possible with other modes of transportation. Oh, and in some countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, etc., there are lots of "foldies" clubs you can join on group rides. Great way to make new friends and have fun. Enjoy!!!
@TwoWheelCruise3 жыл бұрын
We're happy to finally join the club! Which bikes do you suggest for bringing in suitcases? These and other 20" wheel bikes unfortunately seem too big.
@dr.rikhart23653 жыл бұрын
@@TwoWheelCruise Of course, the smaller 16" wheel folding bikes are a bit easier to pack overall. However, my wife and I find them to be a bit "quirky" to ride. They are not as stable as bikes with larger wheels and, with a bit of frame flex and especially at speed, tend to wobble, making the ride not as enjoyable. The other thing is that the "roads" in Asia, especially SE Asia, are not as well-kept and free from hazards as other places such as Japan, Netherlands, etc. Larger wheels don't get caught in rain grates, potholes, cracks and go over larger obstacles than the small wheels. Therefore, we have folders with 20" wheels. We have found them very packable in a maximum size suitcase (62 linear inches or 29"x17'x13") but it does require disassembly and reassembly. The frames themselves fit well with wheels, seat, handlebar stems off, but the deraileur has to be removed in order to fit within the suitcase. This necessitates folding the chain in a manner so it doesnt get tangled during reassembly (not too big of a deal) and covering it with plastic so oil doesnt get on everything. Also, as you know, the bolt that holds the deraileur is small and easily lost and without it the bike is a paperweight so care must be taken to ensure it is included in the packing. It probably sounds a bit complicated but believe me, with some practice, it becomes much easier. I estimate it takes me about 30 minutes to pack and about 40 minutes to unpack and assemble each bike. I do this on the day/night we arrive in the hotel room or wherever we are staying. In all, not too inconvenient overall for us. By the way, the bikes we ride are from a smallish folding bike company called Origami. They are very sturdy and robust. They are a bit more on the heavy side when carrying but we rarely have to do that though because one of the great features is that when folded they can be pushed on one wheel. In fact, I often hang my backpack on the seat post and push the bike to give my back a rest. Using the 20" wheel for pushing means you dont have to worry about rough surfaces, etc. like you do when you push the folders with the small built in wheels. I hope this helps. Please reach out if you would like more information. Here is wishing you both the best. Doc

I've been busy at work so I'm Binge watching your old videos that I missed, I also own a D7 and it rides like a dream, I want to own a Brompton someday or the copy like your Mobot Royale. The good thing about Dahon Boardwalk D7 is you can customized it depending on your needs, mine has a drop bar (I don't fold it anymore) but nothing beats Brompton or the clone versions because of its compact fold. I will miss your Japanese videos but the adventure doesn't end in one place. Good luck on your future travels.

i'm one of the people that recommended you look at *DAHON* (along w/ *TERN* ) folding bikes when you first brought them up many months ago. glad you finally got to test out some. hope you like them. i have a slightly older (but customized) *VISC D18* . surprised the black ones came w/ all *DAHON* parts. usually *DAHON* bikes come w/ EVERYTHING *Shimano* & really good *Schwalbe Big Apple* tires. i guess the only way to make this version available for so cheap was to use their own in-house parts.
@TwoWheelCruise3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your recommendation! We're really happy to have been able to test these out and they are doing a great job so far on all of our ride tests. The HIT sells for $400 here in Japan, so would be hard to get that price point without in-house parts I think.

Just rescued a 6 spd boardwalk from the local 2nd hand store for 20 dollars. Cool little bike that just needs a little attention to the spokes and new rubber. Would love to have one in burnt orange metallic. I will be running Kenda Kwest 20 inch x 1.25 tires for pavement only. I think an internal gear hub and belt drive would be the best not to mention cleaner. BTW all my bikes these days have kick stands and wouldn't want them any other way. Nice video.

I like that the basket doesn't have to come off for the HIT to fold down! Looks like a really convenient package for shopping and getting around the neighborhood. My worry with folders has always been keeping things tidy and well-maintained. It seems like it'd be hard to keep everything clean to store in an apartment and difficult to work on due to the size and non-standard components, awkward long cable runs that have to account for folding, etc. Too bad going cable and chain-less with belt drives and electronic shifting would be wildly expensive! I have seen some single-speed folders before that look pretty clean, no cables and no worrying about a derailleur really low the ground.
@TwoWheelCruise3 жыл бұрын
It was a nice surprise to see the bike fold down with the basket on. I agree, I'd really like a SS folding bike with a possible internal gear hub, but they all seem really expensive.

dahon are pretty good in the folding bike department. im glad you got to test them out! i personally like 1x bikes so it comes down to price. and as you said, folding bikes are really easy to fit into. my opinion is that they are the best first bikes to have because they can help find your fit! not a fan of kickstands since it can stand after you fold it. tip: you can leave the handle bars unfolded, while the bike frame is folded and you can pull or push it around with the handle bars. that would seem easier when you still have to move the bike around while still needing to keep it compact (e.g. if you're boarding public transports, etc)

I got a 2012 Dahon Speed P8, 8 speeds but now fitted with 2 chainrings up front. Wife rode it in Bali over 2 weeks. I did Cambodia also. The stock bikes gears are insufficient for touring and hills. OK for flat or rolling paths. Once you hv luggage n big distances, it gets harder. Oh don't have the handlepost too high. Stresses the headset bearings. A friend's bike had the bearings crushed beyond repair.

@@TwoWheelCruise I even sawed off 2ins of the handlepost. The clamp does get loose after some years. Much stiffer, no creaks and minimal folding issues. Steel should inmprove mechanical resistance (if you take care from rusting) and has has a bit more flexing, which should give slightly smoother rides in rough city roads without compromising rigidity in flats. I have a Dahon bike, and they are solidly made. Mine is an old 10 year old design using 8-speed Shimano IGH. Comes with fenders, racks, etc. I also have a breakable (not folding) Dahon Flo which is an MTB that is just 11kg. It's a 26er. These are old (way back 30 years or so) designs. Nothing wrong with that, but there are lighter and more flexible to upgrade models. Personally, I would rather go to Tern. Mine is the fast 26er. 11 speeds x compact crank. Very fast. There are also other models to pick. But if you look outside these models, there are other lesser known-brands like Crius, FnHon, 3Sixty, which are also very good and at 1/2 to even 1/4 the price! There are now Brompton clones for example that have 6-7 speeds regular cogs! Brompton makes only up to 2 cogs + IGH. You have to go outside Brompton to go more than 2 cogs. Or have 3rd party mechanics to convert them for you.

The Brompton foldable bike is growing popular among businesses people in major cities in the U.S.; especially since they can fold it up and carry it with them on trains and into their office Folding bikes are an interesting concept; but can't mod a folding bike like you can a regular bike, regular bikes are much more sturdy as well and can better handle rough terrain
@TwoWheelCruise3 жыл бұрын
Hard to beat a regular bike, but we're planning to do a lot of travelling in the near future which is really difficult with full size bikes.

There's a huge Brompton modding scene, especially in Asia!

I have been thinking about folding bikes because they are the only bikes that can fit into the trunk of a car or SUV.
@TwoWheelCruise3 жыл бұрын
They seem really nice for that purpose. Too bad I no longer have a car to test that out haha

Since Bianchi is a big name and hot in Japan, and Bianchi Fretta (foldable, OEM of birdy City) can only be found in Japan, I thought it might be interesting to bring overseas. Don't you find it cool!

I didn't know about these, but they certainly looks unique.

Much as I like the Dahon K3 Plus, it's not sized for someone with a small Asian build like me. The front handlebar is way too high and non-adjustable. 😥

I do wish the handlebar could go a little lower..

I'm not really a fan of folding bikes with derailleur gears as well. Here in the UK we do have Dahon bikes but they are super expensive often massively overpriced compared to their competitors. Looking at that black Dahon, it has a low cost freewheel, Dahon branded low end rear derailleur, Dahon branded CST tyres (in fact you can still see the CST branding on the sidewalls so the Dahon bit is just a quick sticker). Those sort of folding bikes sell for around £150-200 in the UK. It should be pointed out though that derailleurs are very easily damaged because they are so close to the ground. In the UK and Japan this is slightly improved in that the derailleur is on the right side and the pavements etc are on the left but in many markets they drive on the right so the derailleur is much more at risk of hitting the kerb. 20" folding bikes are very low geared typically so it becomes even more important to have a freehub and cassette with a 11 tooth cog for improved high gearing over the 14 tooth of a freewheel which makes the bikes very, very low geared. Also for folding frames it does seem that steel works better for hinges, it seems better against fatigue so for me the cromoly based Dahon is the better bike. Both bikes are sub acceptable spec for me based on their low end components. I think Dahon have one assembly plant in China but they are mainly made for them by other companies. Fuji-ta have made some of their bikes and I think Flying Pigeon made some Dahon bikes for sale in China. In the UK we get Dahon bikes assembled by a company in Bulgaria from frames imported from Asia somewhere. Dalloy is a commercial term (Dahon+alloy) it will be generic 6061 aluminum and the extra cable on the Dahon frame has shown to be useless and a pointless design. As you can tell from my text not a Dahon fan at all because the prices are well above the quality of the product you actually get. I would suggest to anyone to check out what the same money will get you elsewhere. Be careful with your money. Actually a quick check shows they don't seem to be available in the UK anymore directly but there are a few German companies willing to send to the UK. A low end Dahon with entry level parts is about £700 delivered to the UK making it about 3-4x more expensive than a similar bike in the UK. Something like this is a good option in the UK. Carrera Transit. It has a 3 speed Nexus so almost zero maintenance gears and a lifetime warranty on the frame and forks. Very abuse-able easy to maintain bike. The white frame gives good visibility and Halfords are everywhere so where-ever you go you will be able to get issues sorted with it in the UK. A far better option than a gimmicky derailleur based folding bike that might cost twice as much over here. www.halfords.com/bikes/folding-bikes/carrera-transit-folding-bike-361292.html

Thanks for sharing your insights from your experience! We're still new to folding bikes and have a lot to learn. That's an interesting point about the derailer side with the directional side of the road, I never really thought about that before. The Dahon HIT in Japan sells for about 40,000 yen or £270, so it seems quite reasonable compared to your suggested price range. Though I think it is more expensive in the UK and US because of extra shipping / volume.
