Parrotlets are amazing, but not the easiest parrots to have. Despite the tiny size they can be aggressive and bite pretty hard. One needs some experience with them, it's not a budgie. At the same time they are wonderful, smart, funny, and bond tightly to their owners.
@Serene3574
@Serene3574 Жыл бұрын
@@VladimirKelman thank you. Are budgies the same as what we used to call parakeet?
@VladimirKelman
@VladimirKelman Жыл бұрын
@@Serene3574 - yes, that's what I meant. People usually call them just parakeets because it's the most common type of parakeets available, but in a stricter meaning "parakeet" is a more genetic type of parrots, which includes many different birds. Those widespread type of parakeets we see in any pet store has a stricter name called Budgerigar or budgie. In our family we somehow chose a parrotlet 26+ years ago (my wife read about parrotlets somewhere) and since then always have one (they live about 12-15 years if everything is fine.) They are tiny South American parrots, even smaller than parakeets = budgies, but behave a bit more bigger parrots. Very brave, might be aggressive and bite hard, very inquisitive and tightly attached to their owners. Very cuddly too. As opposed to budgies, you cannot have more than one parrotlet in the same cage, they often become aggressive to each other.

I never wanted a cockatiel but four years ago , on Dec 23rd when we were getting some things our grandchild wanted, we saw this pitiful cockatiel. It was the only bird in the chain pet store, in an open top glass bin , just SHAKING . The employees were horrible and didn’t seem to care about this bird (or any bird! )when we asked questions. We left with our purchases, but I couldn’t stop worrying about this bird. The store would be closed for the holidays and it didn’t even have a companion bird for comfort. After we got home my husband went back and bought the bird and all the supplies to go with it (we’ve upgraded supplies since then). We didn’t have birds at all and very limited experience . I will never regret it, even though I don’t care to buy pets from chain pet stores. His hatch date was 6 months prior!! That’s a long time to be without hands on pet parenting. I bought a mosquito net enclosure for our bed, kept the cage within it with the door open and spent days inside with the scared cockatiel just allowing him to get used to us. Four years later , he still hates hands 👋🏼 except for scritches. His cage is always open unless there is a safety reason to keep him in there. He loves riding on our heads and we have trained him to step up onto bird ladders. He loves to hang out beside us or on my phone or ipad .He continues to make progress with us , even four years later. We haven’t pushed hands because what we are doing works for us , but it’s coming . His feathers are so full and soft, he’s just a lovely bird and I don’t want to do anything to cause stress. We’re on his time. We’ve added a GCC that has allowed us to have a very different bird relationship than the traumatized tiel but both have great relationships with us , just in different ways . TG our tiel was healthy and has remained so. We are lucky to have a Specialty bird and exotic pets veterinary practice in our area. We also have a house rabbit and it’s awesome to have veterinarians who specialize beyond just cats and dogs. The tiel likes to hang out on the floor with our rabbit and stealing his hay. Odd couple😂

I want to say a big thank you to you for working on these birds. There are definitely a risks of bringing home illnesses like PBFD (or some less dangerous but still uncomfortable) But! despite all of this you give these birds chance for a better living, better diet. You help owners to learn all of that and it melts my heart when I see another video with a new project bird or a new pet :> Your videos really helped me to make a better communication with my adult budges that are very cautious with humans, especially hands. Very excited about that bity cockatiel series :D he looks like a very classical example of "annoying angry bird" many cockatiel owners get when they wanna buy a cute birdie.

Really like how you guys model not just good human-bird behavior but good human-human behavior as well (social skills with strangers, parenting, setting boundaries with friends, communication with your significant other, etc.! YT isn't always super wholesome so it's a treat and I don't feel like I'm helping monetize negativity modeling, poor behavior, criticizing an entire category of human (i.e. dems, reps, women), etc.

I didn't clip a parrot's tail, Jamie, but I did clip an inch off my Magpie's tail, as she had a tendon injury and couldn't preen. Her tail got poopy and she used her tail to support herself. The shorter tail helped springboard her development and she was eventually released ❤❤❤

I got a 3yo ringneck last week off some bad owners. She's missing part of a toe and has a deformed nail that points up, her beak is over grown, they kept her in a small covered cage most of the time, they were clipping her wings badly, and her tail, I can see they were cutting her fethers individually as they grew out. They were feeding her nothing but seed mix, she's completly petrified of tea towels, I wonder why. But the kicker, not an hour after I got home after a 4 hour round trip they called up wanting her back because their 5 yo old girl I just watched repeatably torment her with food was crying for her back, no was my answer.

I have thus 7 month old female handraised cockatiel that was owned for a month already knew step up. But my problem is that I'm trying to teach her no. How is the best way to teach them that? Plus she's very clingy. Any advise on that as well? She's into everything. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I have a 22yr old male that isn't really that interested in her. They are out all day. They have toys. I don't like caging 24/7. They are free flight. I have cats that are used to birds. Never left unsupervised.
