I am not new to having birds as pets. I still watch your videos! Only within the last 10 years has so much good information about pet parrots been spread and was easily available. Everything my family learned was with/through good educated avian vets or by ourselfes. And sometimes there is new stuff! Science finds something new everyday! Other times I just need the reassurence that I am not completely wrong even though I do almost everything different than any breeder I have met the past 20 years. Thanks for helping birds and their owners for a better life together!

The wing topic hits hard for me. I have a 9 month old Lory who was clipped by someone else at the place I got him and one is so so so short. I feel so sorry for him because he’s missed out on having the opportunity to practice his skills at a young age, I have no idea how long they will take to grow back but it’s so unfair to him and now his anxiety around trying to fly hop onto my hand which is all he can do. 😕

Let me say thank you on all your help and advice, it is so helpful. Now let me get down to my story. Some neighbor gave us a wild lilac red crown about 2 to 3 months old. It was in really bad shape, looks like it had a broken wing. It is a really hard to find a quality aviarian vet. The vet I took it to said it's wing was not broken and had full motion and that wing was clipped on that side. He suggested to clip the otherside to add balance, so that what he did. I can only assume on thats how his wing was injured, it hangs lower than the other side. I just cringe when he takes a leap to try and fly and then flops on the ground. I know that he is going to have a lot of emotional baggage. He is starting to trust me as I hand feed him. If you kmow where can I get a good avian vet that can check on the my birds wings. It will be over a year before its feathers grows back. 😢

This video is speaking to me since I’m a new bird owner. I rescued a lovebird 8 days ago. I did all I could possible to find he’s owner but as of yet. No one came forward and no one seems to be looking for him as of yet which is very odd. He’s a young bird but not a baby though he acts like one. 😂 He’s free flighted and he’s cageless for now . I’ve been watching your channel for years though so I know what to do and what not to do but he’s got no idea vegetables and fruits are food so it’s not the easiest thing to convert but patience and understanding as well as resilience will do the trick in the long run. I named him Bandit btw .

@@joebean3615 Thank you, I appreciate that! That’s a he btw. He’s fully flighted and he flies very well which lets me know he’s over a year old because baby birds are usually clipped and has a leg band on the right side so he’s male. However, that leg band was never registered which is strange. He’s a blue masked lovebird and their eyes are generally quite dark by nature regardless of their age. His black feathers on his head are still very black so he’s not old for sure. Lol I’m still doing all I can to find his human but no one seems to be looking for him. If I don’t find his human, I’ll be his forever home though.

I wanna say that i getting ready to move house and with 8 budgies, after full wing flying for 5 months, I don’t want escape out doors or windows in a house that has 4 people who don’t always close doors and windows or screens. And there are two dogs. So two budgies are never clipped- one female who is just bonded to the others- and one male who came to me damaged as a rescue with a broken wing. He keeps all feathers. I have trimmed the rest. Sadly but necessarily. I transport them all on six varied stick and twig sizes. They have 4 cages. When transporting, I’ve got a padded carrier 10x7x12 - all dark, so they won’t bang around like they did in their 30 inch cage and scared me that their wing’s might break blood feathers.

My first two birds are budgies from a pet store- one thing I was grateful for is they wouldn't sell me just one bird if I was a new bird owner who wouldn't be home all the time as company. They would sell me two- of the same gender! They weren't happy selling mixed-gender pairs, especially to new owners. They also wouldn't sell me a cage below a certain size for the birds I was buying- I'd already done research on the type, size, bar spacing and such of a cage I would need, and the one they suggested to me met all those requirements easily. I wish and hope more people get positive experiences when acquiring a feathered friend!

Are you talking about the large pink cockatoo? It's a rose-breasted cockatoo or better known as a galah here in Australia. They are very beautiful, very highly strung, very hard to keep healthy and a LOT of work. You cannot put a galah with parakeets, that won't work. I would advise spending time around some cockatoos before you get one. They are VERY loud, they have a nasty bite (they can bite you down to bone) and they will lose their temper and occasionally attack you and even though it's terrifying you have to show no fear and deal with it. Jamie has some excellent videos about cockatoo temperament. I have one, a 5 year old boy and he costs me a fortune, he's noisy, he wants attention 24/7 and can and will scream like a banshee for it, he bites me when he doesn't get his own way and he has full on tantrums like a toddler. He is magnificent, absolutely. He's also a complete and utter brat.

@Danica.Powell I loved your description of your bird 😂
@Danica.Powell
@Danica.Powell Жыл бұрын
@suelawson7273 I really do adore him but he's just full on, melodrama 24/7 and he will do anything for attention. I've seen him throw himself off his perch and then pretend that he fell off, he will hold a grudge, pretend he's happy, let me get him out and then once he's determined the best point of attack, follow through with great determination and repeatedly fly at my face like some kind of mad bomber plane. I would just hate for someone to get one and not know what they are actually like because that's a lot of unhappiness for the bird and for themselves if it just doesn't work out. They are rehomed far too often because they are difficult and shelters often won't take cockatoos as they are known screamers. They have it tough. They need us not to give up on them. My galah will hopefully be around for a good 40 years and he will drive me nuts at times but I won't give up on him. He would be devastated, he's my best mate and the one time he got sick, the vets had to send him home even though he was still pretty unwell because he wouldn't fight to get better if he wasn't with me. When I would go and visit him while he was staying at the vets for treatment he would be so lethargic and just huddled against his warmer but when he saw me he would force himself to climb onto me so that I would hold him. They are difficult but they have so much love to give.

Any yeah i build them a nice little home in a 160x150cm cage... so i dont want them to breed but if the spring comes around, well the eggs come too. Is the little birdhouse for this kind of bird needed and if so... how do I stop them from breeding? I only give them seeds as a reward for training hand have them on a pallet and veggy diat and they can fly freely the whole day and visit there playspaces that i build from appletreebranches. None the less a real bond didnt accure in the last two years, witch is sad and i only make realy slow progression with them... is it because of the breeding? because... since the last spring and the change of my appartment, my male (Walter my little buddy) startet attacking his girl (Zerras my princess) at randoom and is now very shy if it comes to the tricktraining, barrly not to scarred to try ^^" what am i doing wrong? ^^"

Not everyone has a house with two sets of doors between the bird and -25C weather half the year. You can trim feathers to reduce range and speed of flight to prevent your birds dying in a stupid accident, butnleaving enough for the bird to fly a bit in the house. My first unclipped parrot got spooked by the phone, someone arrived home opening the door, it flew out 50 feet up the air and got clawed in the head by a wild bird too far for me to reach it. There was no reasonable way to prevent this with an unclipped parrot. Keeping the bird in the cage all day is not reasonable. Expecting people to wait to cage the bird every time they need the door is not reasonsble. Trimming a few flight feathers to reduce speed and range is reasonable. My current parrot got "lost" outside several times over the decade+ I had him, a few meters away from the door, because I trimmed feathers just enough so it can fly around the house, but not get too far. Sometimes in the Summer I take the high risk of letting more feathers there, because I fly it outside with a harness. This is a big risk. I know O will regret it if something happens. Don't let people who demand perfection decide for you what you are allowed to do in life. You'll never be good enough to meet everyone's criteria. Sure, listen to their advice, but adapt with what is reasonable in your environment.

Silly question. 😅 but would an old sugar glider cage be an "ok" cage for a birb? I know you've spoken about this before, and it wouldn't be it's "only" habitat, I just had a friend who used to own sugar gliders, and told me I could have it for stupid cheap. Being I still have yet to purchase/adopt a birbby, it is powder coated steel. Figured I throw this out into the yt, universe, and get a response from at least another knowledgeable birby owner. ❤😊
@alsswim
@alsswim Жыл бұрын
It depends on the size of the cage, the bar spacing of the glider cage. Also how good shape the cage is in.
@Danica.Powell
@Danica.Powell Жыл бұрын
It probably depends on the bird. I have a galah like Jamie's and his cage is a massive stainless steel thing that cost an absolute fortune. He chews everything and his beak is very sharp. Also the bar spacing, if your bird can get its head through the bars then it's likely to get itself stuck and that's disastrous. When it comes to your bird, don't take the cheaper option. I know that sounds ridiculous, to go and spend thousands on a cage when you don't have to but the cage is your birds space, my bird isn't confined to his, he's got playstands and everything but he loves his cage, it's his sleeping place, he eats in there and all his favourite toys and perches are in there, you need to make it perfect for them really. They deserve that.

From what I've heard from my own research, it all depends on how much time you're able and willing to spend with them each and every day. If you spend enough time with them, they won't need another bird; however, "enough time" is... quite a lot.
