i have a big issue with this screws: its really hard to get the ice out of the screws compared to other screws on the market. maybe its related to the coating inside the screw? the ice really sticks hard inside the screw after removing the screw from the ice, which is a big disadvantage in multi pitch climbing.

I had the same issue and I hated them at first!! Also had issues with the knobs comming off but that issue seems to be resolved with the newer batches.. someone told me to spray them with silicone this fixed the problem of binding in the ice and or having ice freezing inside the screw, they have worked flawlessly ever since.

Agree - I’d love to hear more about compromises in engineering choice as I feel a teeth design that would pulverize the core more would avoid that issue. 75% of mine plugs up up by the hanger side.

Very interesting video, I learned a lot about the cap, and the part about regulations making ice screws meet a 10 kN load seems odd given cams and nuts have much lower loads. Question: who is in the video? I don’t believe I saw it anywhere. Is it Bill Belcourt? (Found his name on Blue Ice website)

the idea is great, but i had my aero light freeze on me multiple times. the core froze onto the srew, and i could not get the ice out without holding the tip in warm tea or water... just not usable for me in multipitches with this issue

Can anyone tell me why companies don't put in threads past 13cm on longer screws? Is it just because 13cm of threads is enough? Does adding more threads not increase strength after a certain point? It's not like it would add much weight...

My understanding is that there is little no benefit in holding power of the screw beyond that, at least within the typical testing standards. A screw might hold more with a greater number of threads (with the same thread pitch), but it becomes excessive in that the pullout strength is sufficient. The downside with additional threads is increased friction and resistance. That is my limited understanding of the subtleties of ice screw design. -Andreas
