Today we are kicking off a new series on our channel! With electric cars popping up everywhere we are going to do our "FAST Autobahn Range runs". This means we are going to drive "just as we would drive our petrol cars", meaning 160 km/h cruise control wherever its possible, usually reaching average speeds overall of above 120 km/h. This way we can find out which electric car suits OUR driving habits best! Please also make sure to follow all our stuff about this car on instagram! #BMW #iX50 #RangeTest

Great idea for a new series! The range under normal driving conditions, including sustained high speed on the autobahn or motorway, is exactly what is needed to know real range. Long distance driving in an EV is just a hassle still even with the newest high end EVs

I 100% second this test. It’s exactly my approach to EVs. I have zero interest in changing my driving pattern because of inferior technology. ;) We bought an EV last year, it is now being used for basically all transports around home, and for any trips longer than what the SOC allows, I will use my Audi C7 4.0TT which can take me 650-700km without stopping, if I want. And when I have to stop, I fill up with 650km range in less than 5 min… Not disrespecting EVs, I have just realized it doesn’t do the full job. It will take many, many years before EVs fully can replace ICE cars in userfriendliness and flexibility.

So you never take a break while driving?
@timessix8434
@timessix8434 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mtatc1 Maybe you noted my writing ”If I want”? Of course I take break, but on my own terms, typically when I have to ”charge” up the tank I get out, fill up the car, go to the bathroom, buy a cup of coffee, and then back on the road. Those maybe 10 min of legstretching is enough for me to be able to drive another tank, if necessary. Not everyone feels the same. My main point is: When I am on my way somewhere, I want to roll - not be forced by the car, available chargers etc, etc, to stand still every 90min, or so.
@supaahflyy
@supaahflyy 2 жыл бұрын
@@timessix8434 that seems unreasonable tbh. Most people on a roadtrip are there with family or other people. By averages they take a 10-20 min break every 300-400km. The top end EV's, I'm thinking Tesla, EQS, Taycan etc can do that distance on a charge. What's the issue if your break happens at the same time as the car charges? With these new EV's it takes about 20 mins to get the charge high enough to go another 300-400km km's. I'm not trying to say your usage is incorrect. All I'm saying is your usage is actually not the 'normal' or 'typical' usage for most people in the population

What's funny to me is that when Tesla came over to Germany with their Model S, the Germans complained that it wasn't fast enough in terms of top speed, so Tesla upped the power and limited the car at 155 mph just as the German gasoline powered competition. Now the Germans build EVs that are all limited to 200 kmh (120 mph) or even less.

I'm driving an EV and I'm also not going to change my driving style. I love to take the car for a drive once in a while, just for the sake of driving. It's easy when you can charge at home (which I luckily can) otherwise it's a completely different story (for now). Fun fact, before I used to take the Alfa Giulietta in the weekends for a drive.. now I love to drive my EV more as this feels much faster when playing around. I still love the Giulietta but driving an EV is so different.

They're obviously only bitching about the lack of noise, when in reality, ask any Formula E driver (especially those who came after driving F1 for a while) and he'll tell you the instant torque acceleration at any speed is incredible. Great video but can't fully agree with your conclusion. Being forced to make a 30 minutes brake after already roughly 220km is just not convenient, travel speed with 150-160kmh (what was the average speed?) is also not super quick. I have a 2021 530d, BMWs latest models are so quiet and comfortable at 180-200 kmh and yet efficient that this is my typical travel speed. I do many business trips with a distance of 400-600km, usually I do it without a break. I would accept it to have one break but again probably even then I can't go as fast as I am used too. I would also not be willing to accept the limiter at already 200 kmh...
@supaahflyy

This is a BMW efficiency issue. Tesla's are far more efficient compared to basically all EV's and thus can give you that 400-500km range at fast speeds that you're talking about. That would be a car that would get you there in 1 stop at most or if you drive more efficiently (slower speed), no stops. 530d is fine. I've got a M4 so I know about petrol/diesel life. But electric cars are far far better cars as daily drivers and to cruise around on the motorway. Especially with autopilot where you don't have to waste energy doing boring motorway driving

I’m also usually driving at 150-160 km/h on autobahn, so it’s basically a 30 minute stop to charge up to 80%, and to drive less then 200 km till the next stop (in case of this particular car). I think I’ll stick to my 2 liter diesel, with which I’m averaging 6,5 liters per 100 km at those speeds, even with the current diesel prices there’s no point to switch to ev if you have to drive on autobahn daily and don’t want to stick behind the trucks, adding the inconvenience of stopping for 30 minutes every 200 km on longer trips. As a second car maybe, but definitely not a BMW IX as a second car)

I’m used to driving an EV, have 2 Chevrolet Bolts bought new 4 years ago and here in Canada we get temps that can go as low as -30C. Usually at those temps my consumption can go as high as 28 kWh/100km with the heater on and driving 120km/hr in the highway with winter tires on.

Yeah, that's the stuff we're looking for. Decent test. We bought an Audi e-tron with 70ish kWh of battery to my wife, we're using it for UK daily driving. It works well for British standards (max 80mph driving). I travel once or twice every year to Turkey from UK, using European motorways where the speed limits are basically much higher. We obviously do that with an ICE car, in our case it's a Mercedes S Class. I personally find 160 km/h as the sweet spot, too. Considering replacing my S Class with an Eletre R nowadays. 906 bhp is crazy power, which nearly doubles my S Class, but I can drive for more than 600 kms with mine, whereas Eletre seemingly will be able to do at most half of it. I never drive my S Class in eco mode, however I tend to drive our e-tron in efficiency mode due to range anxiety. For these list prices, it seems to be out of mind even considering huge government grants. I don't know what to do, honestly, but this ain't nowhere practical in Europe!

What happens when you turn up for your fast charge (whilst going for a coffee etc) but find that all the charging points are already in use. As EV's become more popular there will need to be many more charging points. @@Automann-TV yes you are absoluetly right. But mixed on autobahn, city and cross-country would be doable, no? I think there is much potential with lower drag coefficient and weight savings from newer battery tech in the near future, like lets say ~5 years.

I absolutely cannot understand the positive conclusion. Around 200+ km with this driving profil is not anywhere near good. As long EVs are not able to reach at least 500km without driving like a 80y old lady its absolutely pointless to drive one.

Depends on your driving needs. I mean our test was done in the most un-ideal surrounding and you still can get 250 km before you have to stop for a 30 min. charge. I agree it’s not as good as a petrol car but still quite good for an electric car. This same „test“ in summer and you‘ll likely get 100 km further.

@@Automann-TV Absolutely. And what sane person buys a 5m SUV to only drive it in a small range mostly in urban environment? You can’t even take this car to go on a holiday trip. From Berlin to south Tirol for example I would need to charge at least 5 times. Needs a special kind of stupid to spend 100k on this.

@@cronaldo145 lol. Technology it‘s coming, and it‘s coming fast. Those ice are soon over. Just like mobile phone with butons lol. There are tests with 130 kph with Eqs and even IX but the other variant. Both have exceed 500 km real range at 130 kph once again. Except Germany, everywhere 130 it is the legal limit. And don‘t forget these are first models on sale. In 5 to 10 years it will make no point in buying ice‘s . And driving more then 500 km without break it‘s insane, and i‘m saying that cuz i drove countless times for 1.000 km just with one break.

Nice video. Tesla M3 SR+ did 210 km on AB on a similar test, with its usable 55KwH battery. BMW iX50 using almost 80KwH for the same distance. Pretty inefficient it seems.

But the iX50 is more comparable to a Tesla Model X. Of course smaller / lighter cars are more efficient.

How is the charging infrastructure in Germany? Is it easy to find a charger and are they operational most of the time? One problem in North America is that there is so little charging stations and half of them don't even work!

The optimal speed to spend the least time (riding time+charging time) for long distances in current fast charging BEV's is around 150-160 km/h. See the video's made by Andreas Haehnel.

If I'm not able to have two cars, the gasoline variant or hybrid stays as reliable. I don't know why you are driving 200 km "fast" at 150-160 if after only 200 km a half an hour stop is a must. 😐 You rather drive "slow" at 130kmh max speed with better range and safety, and so you'll be at destination in one take. Just saying. Also, if I'm a regular person with regular income, the choice will remain for gasoline engine or maybe a diesel one if I have long journeys often in my schedule. Thank for your time and effort! 🙂

really nice test idea! I think the Model 3 will be very good in efficiency and nice with charging down low (5 to 60% stops is perfect). The IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 and Taycan will charge incredibly fast, but also use a shtload of energy :D

You need a different camera for the walkaround. Wide angle messes up the car’s proportions. This is a difficult car for many, a bit ahead of the times, so you need the most flattering angles you can get.

Is it IX50 labeled IX40 or IX50 is a balloon ? I put my xc90 for sale, it seems I should cancel sale and continue to ride my xc90 till a realistic range giving car. Sorry ix!!!
