After multiple GS’ have gone back to a simple whip - KTM 690 enduro spec. Loving it. So simple and properly good on the off road. Fast enough and whips through traffic - only downside so far - lights good but not as good (will add some) and weather protection of course not as good.

What has happened to bikes? Two wheels, a tank and an engine with a seat yet manufacturers have made them huge, massively expensive and bloated them with shit. Nobody talks about day to day stuff like wheeling this bugger around the driveway etc. As for getting you where you need to go.. ffs, people have travelled the world on C90’s, this isn’t the only thing that’ll do that.

You can extend the warranty with pretty much full coverage except for wear items, e.g. friction components like pads etc, for £43.60 a month. That is the highest price but gives you European breakdown cover and zero excess on repairs. ANY BMW bike that has a mileage under 80k miles, even those bought privately, can be covered. You can reduce the monthly cost by taking a £100 excess and no breakdown cover to, £32.57 a month. BMW will cover any repair up to the market value of the bike (or £1k whichever is GREATER (for those who've bought an old bike)). Considering in some regions BMW charge £150+ an hour for labour alone, £32-£44 a month (depending on excess and breakdown) it's a small price. Put another way, it's between £390.84 and £525.80 (zero excess, full breakdown cover) a year, or a fraction of the cost of getting a stripped 2nd and 3rd gear cogs changed......on any age bike. The bike doesn't have to be serviced by BMW but needs to be maintained in line with service intervals and service records need to be up to date.

The inflated new bike prices reflect the fact that most people lease bikes for 3 years and then hand the keys back, so price creep is less noticeable when spread monthly. If you are going out and dropping £20k + on a new bike in one hit you need your head checked

I have always liked the GS for relaxed touring so I rent them when I'm in the EU... but the one thing that surprised me was how insanely loud their clatter was over 200kph on the Autobahn, I really was concerned the motor was going to grenade it was so loud... it was MUCH louder than the wind noise even at those speeds. BUT... at more modest speeds the bike is comfortable and capable, no I won't be trading my Multistrada or my KTM in for one but they really do deserve the positive feedback they get from most folks who ride them.

I think I fail to understand the concept of an adventure bike for off-road use. I think the tall rounder concept works. You want something with long travel plush suspension because not all roads are perfect. But a single track with ruts and big rocks. That doesn’t scream something over 250lbs and dedicated knobby tires to me. I’m not an off-road rider. I’m an entry level street hooligan with expert level vigilance. I would personally prefer adv bikes to be more approachable. Lower heights for us short folk, more road focused, less weight, slimmer profiles. Basically your average middleweight naked bike with longer plush suspension, some wind protection, and a bigger tank. If I want to put 80/20 or 60/40 tires on it then that’s my decision. But coming like that when maybe 5% of the riders have an off-road back is silly

It's an amazing piece of machinery & I don't even mind the looks, but unless you're absolutely minted & built like the hulk, is anyone seriously buying one of these to regularly go off road? It can do it obviously but it's essentially a sports tourer that's comprimsed on the road, where it will spend 99% of its time, because of the off road elements. It's just too heavy & expensive to be a realistic option & no one in their right mnd is choosing this in stock trim to regularly do greenlaning or enduro type riding any time soon. Maybe I've missed the point but it just seems like a very expensive contradiction & exercise in style over substance if you're using it on the road.

I just think all of these monsterous adventure bikes have lost their focus. They are too big and heavy for proper offroad and on road where 99.9% of them spend their entire lives they offer little other than looks that your traditonal tourer / sports tourer did. I'd really like to see the return of sports touring bikes in a modernised form to popularity. Don't get me wrong the new GSA is an impressive feat of engineering but most of it is solving problems of it's own creating. For mixed terrain riding I would much rather ride an old R80.

There is a reason Rally Raid/ Dakar bikes are only 450cc.......And not like this behemoth. It's obviously a well engineered bike, but in reality it's too big, too heavy, too much tech, and too expensive.

Of course lighter bikes are easier to ride off road, but the reason Dakar bikes are 450 is because of the rules designed to slow them down. The KTM 950 was the dominant bike before, and they figured the speeds were getting too dangerous

After three GSs I moved to a Multistrada, sorry but it’s so much better and doesn’t rattle like a bag of spanner’s, gets admiring looks from even non bikers too. I’d sack the GSA design team it’s so fugly, too tall and too heavy.

Its an expensive motorcycle for rides to Starbucks. BMW lost the plot. An updated HP2 Enduro is what we need. 800cc parallel twin, traditional forks, 21in front wheel, 18in rear, no computer screen, just a functional off road bike with basic navigation tower and pannier racks.
