Good luck with it! I just purchased a 1985 410 Commander last year. Great boats if you give them the time and $!

I have a water leak located under the dash of my 1983 410 commander and cant find the shut off valve. Looks like it may be the water line to the windshield but cant figure out how to shut the water off to repair? Any advice?

I don't think mine has a water line to the windshield but the valve is most likely in the control panel box underneath, or possibly aft of the engines.

Small Block Chevy and even early honda 4cyl is easy to install distributor 180Degrees off..Thats an 8 minute test. maybe try it if its backfiring or all out of sync. No doubt Big blocks have the same possible issue. Super common after an "expert" has done much work on an engine.

The problem is that many engines require the timing dots to both be "up" but many people time the engines with the dots towards each other. Voila! 180 degrees off. Always double check compression or look at rockers on #1 cylinder.

Pull the distributor .. rotate the distributor assembly half a turn and slide the distributor back into the engine. semi tighten it back up. try starting it . you may get lucky. .dont over think it.. but if you must.. it rotates once for every two engine rotations.

Well, I would check compression first, if there is none, check the valves...Loosen all rockers. If compression then, check for relative timing. If OK, reset valves. Now attack Ignition timing and set. Also....do you have oil pressure....check that absolutely FIRST! Now, with the mechanical and electrical timing relatively set...look at fuel...just raw "do you have fuel? It should at least start now, won't run well, but will rum and adjust to spec. That's all there is Bro. My guess from what you have shown....the guy was only guessing at things that he knew and replaced most tune up stuff. Did a fairly good job, if without major engine problems....He just didn't have more than "tune-up" skills My gut feeling, for being a mechanical guy for 50 years and a major boater....since BOTH engines are out at the same time....the engines overheated due to lack of intake water; overheated them and warped the heads and all compression LOST...not really that bad a problem....shave the heads and do a top end job on all heads. Very do-able and you should not have to pull the engines, which is LOTS of work. POINT: look at the through holes for the intake in the bottom of the hull....when it was winterized, did the person doing it CLOSE the petcocks? That would be a real reason for BOTH engines to go out, the antifreeze would NOT drain out and all that he needed to do was OPEN them in the spring....and about the ONLY reason that I can think of affecting BOTH engines on separate independent systems.. FYI: I just bought a 1973 35' Chris and just starting a total rebuild, too. Not just the engines....the total interior, exterior, electrical and plumbing to the tankage...wish me luck...I am 69 years old. If you want to communicate with me...this is my 5th large boat and I have been doing marine work for 40 years. My Email is: Chuck.m83 @ yahoo.com.....feel free in contacting me. PS: Just junk that old rusted Holding Tank and get a new Roro-molded, plastic one that is 10 gallons larger and you won't have any problems...oh ya' replumb everything. The engine compartment actually looked pretty ship-shape for an older boat. Boats ain't cars!!!! Good Luck Chuck McKinnis

Like a few others who have already posted, I just picked up a 410 this past fall. Mine is a 1978 with a slightly different configuration in the aft cabin with two fuel tanks. I have the same Marine Power 454s so I’ll be really interested to watch your progress. About 1,000 hours on mine but they seem to run well despite some electrical/start issues. Thanks for producing these videos.

Holding tank should be under the main center floor between both engines.

Apparently YT pulled my previous comments. Beware the screws are not phillips bit. There are forums detailing holding tank removal. Best of luck!!! I love Chris-Crafts! My Dad had a 1948 Runabout that was beautiful and fun to cruise. Best Wishes!

You can't mention the virus or the booster in your comments. I've got the Foerster bit, but I could only find it in one size. I'd like to have a smaller one.

If you need any advice, I may know a guy that has some time working on them!👍

Yeah, I may be in over my head with this one! LOL. I would appreciate his ph number, because the guy I know won't answer the phone!

Shouldn't be any freeze damage where it's located. Check the oil for water to be sure. Then I'd say step one is a compression test, then check spark, and then check fuel. One thing you have to be careful of is making sure all of your components are explosion proof, so don't use automotive fuel pumps, alternators, ignition components, etc. There is also marine rubber fuel hose that is double layer with a fire resistant outer shell. Most people can't figure out why an engine won't run, and a lot of times it's something simple. The fact that the previous owner said "no compression, needs to be rebuilt" in conjunction with a bunch of miscellaneous new parts tells me that he couldn't figure it out, so he sold it. It could be something as simple as he changed the distributor and didn't time it right. If that oil pump drive didn't line up, he may not have known to move it.

thanks for the advice. As soon as I get that holding tank fixed, then its on to the engines!

Timing gears are out of time, pulled valve covers to see if valves were opening on time.
@CrankAddict2 жыл бұрын
That would be tough. I would have to attach a degree wheel to the crank to check the opening and closing of the valvetrain. Waterpump looks original, so hopefully no one has ever been into the timing chain.
