The university has a database of every employee, and it includes a photo. As a longtime employee, my experience is that the police ask your ID number on the phone and look you up before dispatching an officer. That officer has access to this info when arriving. That is why it is so normal as to seem procedure for police to not even ask for an ID and why the professor was incensed. There is no policy. The request from the faculty union was to create a clear policy and an oversight board to ensure everyone is treated the same each time. It shouldn’t vary on identity, but it also shouldn’t vary on which particular officer shows up and their individual interpretation of who can access a building because on a large campus people get locked out every day.

It has been bothering me for quite some time how ANYTHING can be accused of being racially biased from non-white Americans (especially among black). As non-white immigrant myself, I understand the racism. But that's no excuse to blame on racial issues whenever something doesn't go your way, it's not fair to good decent people who are doing their jobs, or even trying to help you! For example, if an innocent black man is stopped by the police on the street, because the police heard the description of a suspect fits with the said innocent man. He doesn't understand the police actually have very little and limited information on the suspect to work with. Now instead of blaming on racial profiling, he should be more mad at that suspect making other black to look bad. Another thing that bothers me is the double standards, which I've seen way too many times.

If they had gone in with him, escorted him to where his key was, taken it and him out and tested it worked, providing he was able to locate his key card immediately and providing it was in an office with his pictures and stuff... that could have surely eliminated the possibility that he was a terminated staff member who'd actually turned in his key, no? Like when you leave your backpack in a bar and you're asked its brand and what's inside etc, where you left it and so on... such a highly advanced technique could have been used to determine if he actually was working there.

In 1995 at CSULB an student was raped in an classroom in the Art Department. The suspect was well aware of how the campus worked, and he carried a backpack like any other student. Security didn't know this person / professor. Asking him to follow him into a building is not protocol for a reason. It's a safety protocol. Professor is an employee with a boss.
