New Boots! rebuilding CV axles (Honda odyssey)

recently my cv boot axle started leaking so i decided to try and rebuild them with some help from my buddy Mark. its a messy job but i think we did ok!

Thanks for the content Chow, I've done quite a few CV's on the 100 series now and your vids have been very helpful. It's quite common getting a bit of grease seep from the inner side of the outer boot on a lifted cruiser. Before reinstalling a new or rebooted CV it helps adding a few good wraps of self amalgamating tape around the band and on to the cv, this makes a pretty good long lasting fix! just make sure it is SUPER clean so it will stick properly. Awesome how-to video. I love the gas cleaning method!! I've rebooted my EP3 CV's before and their yellowish grease is a pain to get out! Honda must have cost reduced those inner bands, they used to have a loop to pass the band through (instead of top and bottom tabs) that you could pull against to tighten and fold back over to lock in position. I have also used a spring-loaded centerpunch to detent the band at the crimp location to keep it from slipping or loosening.

I wouldn't say it's a rebuild. It's more like a clean and install new CV boots! No bearing nor hardware replaced. Good video!

So there are kind of two types of CV Axles, the one you are showing is a Tripod style and the OEM for Toyota is a 6-ball RZEPPA type (much better in the LC). But basic premise is still the same, there is a cage that holds the RZEPPA together that makes it a bit more complicated to come apart.

@@chowcares I bought cheap CVS from Oreily’s auto parts for my lx470. After getting vibrations a few weeks later I took them out and took one apart. Sure enough it was the tripod style instead of the proper 6 ball. Toyota only after that.

@@chowcares Is it a toyota spare? If so, then you will see what I am talking about. Look up the YT channel ME MY, he is a MUD member and posts lots of videos of stuff. Had a good tutorial on axles and redoing bearings and whatnot.

Was going great until he installed the inner boot clamps. You need a tool to tighten those first.

Pulling the shaft from the CV joint may make it easier to clean and re-grease. I can understand why you didn't. It adds complexity and opens you up to causing damage.

How are the rebuilt units holding up? I just had my CV Axles rebuilt for my 2005 Honda Civic Si EP3. New ones leaked transmission oil twice. Even after the rubber seal where Axle goes into transmission was replaced. Shop had to send OEM ones for rebuilt. So far so good.

Zero issues so far. Be careful when installing into the transmission, the oil seal will easily damage.

At min8:10 what you see is the gearbox/differential oil and it IS NOT water... to be precise..

The grease of the RZEPPA joint is MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE. 😉

I made the mistake of putting on the AutoZone brand and had a horrible vibration. SO went and replace them with Honda Factory Axels. Instantly was Butter

What’s in the white can? Is that special solution to clean the grease? I am going to reboot my LX470 axles next week with oem kit. Definitely better idea to clean it up.
