This is really interesting and I remember the days being taught to use carbon and being told exactly what you just said! This is really interesting since I was taught that exact thing ..so having that drilled into my head since I was a kid, I would like to say that it will work..🤔😅 It's only been over the past year that I have been told to throw away all the cartridges and carbon and replace it with media such as matrix or lava rock! Although my aquariums are running smooth, I know that that process takes a while so this should be really cool to see.. This time around in the hobby though, I created planted tanks and I did a lot of water changes when I first set them up like 10 to 20% every day or every other day. Everything was brand new on my 15 gallon when I first started on it..including everything in the filter.. I also had a deep planted substrate in it of stratum, which I later capped with sand. So I had really good luck or results with it. So what if I had been a new person setting up an aquarium and didn't know some of the things I know now? (I really do like the simple design of this filter and you are definitely not lazy 😅 work smarter not harder 😅) In theory, we're taught that carbon is detoxifying. hmmmm🤔 I also wondered if the carbon itself if left in a filter for a long period of time without being changed or after being "exhausted", would just end up being like a biomedia especially since pet stores and Aquarium companies tell us to switch them out often? Another great experiment Fishman looking forward to seeing more results! Thanks for the video FishMan have a very blessed day 🙏💚🌿🐟🌿

Hey Mary! So many things are perpetuated based on profit instead of what's best. A little bit of knowledge and patience goes a long way. So glad you like this filter. Carbon unfortunately makes for poor biomedia. After it's been in an aquarium for a while it starts to release what it has absorbed. Thanks so much for coming by! Always look forward to hearing from yo!

When the charcoal becomes exhausted it's called "biochar". Cody's Lab did an experiment with it recently that you might find interesting. At the very least, how he "charged" the charcoal is relevant to these videos. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoWUmKt_oJqaZrM The thing to remember about these 2 videos is that the ammonia is metabolized by bacteria which is a living thing. A single celled organism. That single cell is not a brain cell and it doesn't care where it grows. Hey Eric, (if you're reading this)... since bacteria is a living thing, another thing for you to test is temperature during cycle. Nitrosoma's peak metabolic rate happens closer to 70F/21C and colder water can dissolve more oxygen in it. You'll probably get faster results if you set the heater lower to room temperature during your four day test cycle before turning it back up to Angel Fish temperature.

Question: Why is gravel your choice of media? I have noticed similar gravel in some of your other videos. Many counsel us on the net to go for maximum "porosity." Some even suggest there is no media in nature porous enough; so by theirs. My apologies if your covered this elsewhere. Construction Videos: I love them. Any you made will be appreciated. One can appreciate a finished product; however, the eloquence and craft of the journey adds to the story. Thanks for the chance to view your skill and science, Jim
@FishmanEricRussell3 жыл бұрын
The more porous the media the greater the possible surface area and therefore the better the biological filtration. There's no real argument against this other than how much do you actually need. I find in most of the tanks I've set up that gravel is porous enough and if I think I need a bit more I use lava rock or coral. I've bought some of the commercial media and tried them. The only thing I really noticed in the end was the price. Thanks for watching!

Straight carbon impacting your ammonia concentrations, probably marginal at best. It can pull out any number of things, but ammonia isn't one it binds very well. Carbon which does interact with ammonia: is surface treated activated carbon. It's usually exposed to an oxidative treatment with something like nitric acid. So, is your carbon an "oxidized carbon"? Also worth noting, oxidized carbon will only get you so far. Activated Carbon specifically designed to pull out Ammonia, have proprietary granules added, specifically because the carbon alone does little
@FishmanEricRussell3 жыл бұрын
It is acid treated, though not with either nitric or phosphoric acids as it was intended for a marine environment. I still expect it to have negligible affect on the ammonia. I wanted to run this simply for the nostalgia of what was told to me when I first started working in pet stores. Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch!

Not one to do math, even under pressure; my theory is it would take a massive amount of carbon to make more than a day's difference as carbon absorbs organics that lead to ammonia spikes. That said, I think we all want the magic formula however; we are in reality, proving that tank cycling is tank cycling. No shortcuts. Improved efficiency is still a worthy goal. Here's an experiment that might be interesting: reversing your plant experiments to see how commercial immersion grown plants adapt to slowly becoming submerged. I've often wondered if lessening the shock of going from one growing condition to another would reduce melt off. Something I had intended to try with that 20L wasting space in a corner in my living room😉👍
@FishmanEricRussell3 жыл бұрын
You're quite right that by the end of this we're most likely going to see a consistent 72 hr. effect. That seems to be what previous works on this have come up with. Those tests though dealt with specific filters where I'm going to try many. I've seen many videos on submerging terrestrial plants and it seems to all end the same. Making the process slower might help but I expect that after long term submersion the plant will drown. Thanks so much for coming by and sharing your thoughts on this!

@@FishmanEricRussell That was what my thinking too until the ionic aspect was brought up. Postive and negative ions attract each other. My filter is like an big magnet. This is different ball game. Anoxic filteration. www.mankysanke.co.uk/html/anoxic_filtration.html Even if you don't want the anoxic to take out nitrates, the zeolites can still be used to zap ammonia. And the best thing is you can recharge the zeolites by soaking it in brine.

Mate, be carefull with your assumption. If you get amonia spike, carbo do help your fish, but not by reducing amonia, it help your fish by reducing ph. There is two type of amonia in your test environment, NH4+ and NH3 (ionized and un-ionized ammonia) your test kit do not see the different between them, however un-ionized amonia is alot more poisonous to your fish. Carbon, help you to lower the Ph, and with lower Ph, you get less un-ionized amonia,, hence your chans that fish live increase. But adding carbon to lower ph depends on your water hardness. Summarising this shoud be : If you have not hard water, adding the amount of carbon you used, will lower Ph, and let you get less un-ionized amonia and icrease your fish survivell chans, hower your test kid still show unchange amounto of ammonia.
@FishmanEricRussell3 жыл бұрын
You're right in that most activated carbon in the aquarium trade is acid washed and could lower the pH in your tank. The pH of them being around 3-5. Depending on the chemistry of your tank water this could lower the pH by a noticeable amount. This test though isn't about it's general benefits in an aquarium but specifically about whether it will absorb ammonia. Thanks for coming by and sharing your thoughts on this!

I think that there will be no difference between carbon, and no carbon. I have never heard anyone claim that carbon pulls ammonia or nitrites out of water, so I don't think it will make any difference. Don't get me wrong, I HOPE I'm wrong, and it just pulls ALL the ammonia and nitrite out, but I dont expect that to be the case. Also, so you don't have to mess with showing every build, why not make a playlist of a few videos showing just how to built stuff. One could be basic acrylic techniques, another advanced ones, another silicone techniques, and another tips and tricks to get measurements, or straight lines, or the best bits and blades to use for the various projects. I think it would save you time in the long run and be a REALLY nice resource for us with no experience in the field.
@FishmanEricRussell3 жыл бұрын
You're quite right. There should be no removal with carbon. The funny thing is when ever I leave out the build process I get lots of requests to put it in . Thanks for taking the time to come by!
