This video doesn't do NB justice. I own land and plan to develop in southern NB, it is so beautif there and the people are just wonderful. I've met a ton of Ontarians who have moved there and do not regret it.

You are correct. He has missed a ton of potential here. I usually chalk it up to them not having been here before or taken the 4 hours to drive across the province, in any direction. The climate, topography, and culture changes in every corner.

Agreed I am a fellow New Brunswicker as well and his first few sentences were kinda insulting. Not every young adult leaves the province for good, a good portion travelled some before heading back. I spent two years in Alberta, staying with my Aunt and working. It wasn’t meant to be something permanent but a leaving experience away from the parents and other things. Besides, a lot of people are coming back to the East Coast because of the pandemic. More space to spread out and still be in contact with people.

Our only complaint living in NB for the last 3 years is the glyphosate spraying that Irving and NBPower do here. Also, the general influence that Irving has in the province.

Great thing about New Brunswick is that it has the warmest ocean in Canada on the Northumberland straight. Great place to be in the summer if you like the ocean. Bad part of New Brunswick is everything is far apart, winters are pretty harsh, one of the lowest pay and highest tax provinces. Might have to travel out of province if you need a medical operation that requires specialized equipment. Good summer spot, would be alright homesteading if you have family with you and have a source of income that doesn't rely on working in New Brunswick. I love New Brunswick, but it has its negatives for sure.

New Brunswick has good soil. Lots of trees and trails. Lots of snow. A LOT of people hunt and fish here. Lots of independent markets. Southern NB = english speaking, northern NB = french. Both languages are welcome province wide. I live there.

I moved to PEI a couple of years ago and noticed that stormy weather is often buffered by Nova Scotia. If people are looking for a coastal feel, there are so many beaches within driving distance that you can look for less expensive property away from the coast line.

Deff have to go visit first to decide what areas you like. North end of province is very french, with pockets of towns that are quite french in south. Probably should learn french if living there. There is different topography there, mountain, gorgeous forests in certain areas, beauty coast. Then other areas are pretty flat, lifeless and boggy and possibly flood prone. Saint john gets a lot of fog from the bay so that was a deal breaker for me, Interesting city though. Fredie was the cleanest city, post industry, government city. Moncton seemed kinda ghetto to me, biggest city, wasnt a fan. You just have to go, you could drive up to a property that looks good on mls but the whole rd up to it is full of delapigated houses, abandoned houses, rough and that was 25 min from fredie. Another thing is some properties dont have power lines on rd, added cost. Ive been visiting for 3 yrs and planning on purchasing land this year prob a hour from a major city. Also aware of economics so working on a online biz to supplment, but also planning on producing off of land or do trade work. They are short of trades like most places. And for economics it could be a good place to be because they are used to being depressed, whereas ontario is not and will suffer alot more. Its going to affect everywhere. Another thing on climate is the 1-2 extra months of summer as compared to edm ab where i grew up and dont want to go back because of climate, beauty, tree varieties, affordability, pop size. NB has fewer than 1% of can pop 😳. Theyre also more off grid friendly. Where ontario is so controling. Think thats all haha thanks if you read 😅.

In 2022 NB added more people through mass immigration then they have had in the last 29 years combined. I live near the bay of Fundy and it is a great place to grow food but I would avoid north facing slopes(kills your fall crops with shade) and employ green houses and cold frames.

The "cities" in New Brunswick are the size of towns in the larger Provinces. Fredericton is roughly 55k(100k in that circle), Saint John is roughly 80k(130k in its circle) and Moncton/Dieppe/Riverview is about 130k(150k). Miramichi is like 15k, Bathurst is I think about 15k as well. Saint George area is about 10k, and Sussex around 5k. There's also Woodstock to the NW of Fredericton (but outside the bubble) at 5k, Grand Falls further North is another 5k and Edmunston near the Quebec border is I think 20k. There's a few other small areas like Saint Quentin in the NW centre which is under 5k if I remember right. Campbellton NW of Bathurst in the Metapedia Valley(beautiful) is like 10k. Must keep in mind that for work/farmstead/farming that being bilingual(english/french) becomes more important the further North you go. If you're on the Fundy Coast or in Moncton there's the risk of getting hit by a fast weakening hurricane but otherwise it's fine. Nor'Easter blizzards can be rough but the snow pack is good for the water retention. It is flat near Miramichi, Bathurst, North of Moncton and the area between Moncton and Fredericton. The South has hills 200-400m, some of which rise sharply with nice elevation for sun exposure, microclimates and views. The central and NW part of the Province has actual Mountains up to 824m Mount Carleton. Zone 5a-b in the South, 4a-5a in the centre, 3a+ up North. Plant accordingly.

The only big Agri I know if is McCain for McCain fries. They grow most of the potatoes near Grand Lake. Oh, there's also a big berry operation up near Bathurst. Otherwise it's a lot of Forestry owned by the Irving Family.

Being an army brat, I grew up in rural NB and I'd return in a heartbeat to homestead. The quality of soil is fantastic. But to be cautious, the Saint John River is prone to serious flooding in the spring. There are a lot of choke points for spring ice breakup. And I have always been nervous of the Fundy tides. So those are two areas I'd avoid. The taxes are the most reasonable in Canada but the services are possibly the worst, which probably makes the homesteaders on the East Coast the most self-reliant, at this point. Prior to buying on PEI, we toured NB for homestead properties and found wonderful places there.

We've had a flood of families move her during the last 3-4 years that have moved to get away from BC and ON particularly. Housing prices and farmland has been snapped up and is not that easy to come by any longer! Lots of young families have moved in so I have to disagree with what you're saying here. And we have good farmland!

Now that you have done few videos with Nate at Canadian Prepper, perhaps you could do a video on the design and construction of your home? Many preppers do videos on their land, their gardens and building layouts and off grid systems but hardly anyone discusses how they designed and laid out the house, what "systems of redundancy" they built into the house or their foundation/wall/roof/insulation/door & window choices they made. I'm sure your house is very different from a typical "in-town" home so I'd like to know what guided your choices and how it all came together.

Western Cape Breton is amazing! Another New Brunswick consideration is language. Much of northern and western New Brunswick (e.g., Miramichi, Edmundston, etc.) is predominately French. If you are not at least bilingual, you may struggle in these areas.

Southern NB has a nuclear power plant. The province is mostly a big mosquito infested swamp. Wildlife is abundant. The Acadian Forest is slightly different than the Boreal Forest. Acreage isn’t as cheap as it was before the pandemic. One of Canada’s main immigration gateways. The province is the beta testing grounds for digitalization of government services and one of the more advanced cybersecurity sectors in Canada. Winters suck and Summers are too short. There’s definitely better places but NB is doable for sure.

I honestly don’t know what to think of this video, I am conflicted over what he said. Part of me thinks he is insulting my home province while another part thinks some of what he said correct. He really needs to do a very thorough investigation of each province before putting out videos like these, actually come here and explore every inch if possible. For one thing, there are young people here. It’s not just old or middle age people. Heck, I was born here in New Brunswick and grew up here….only leaving it briefly for summer trips until my early twenties when I spent two years at my Aunts place in Alberta. I love it here and can’t imagine living anywhere else, only leaving for short vacation style trips… I guess it takes a unique kind of person to want to live here…..
