I'm now a retired professional Weldor / Fabricator, most of the places I ever worked required double eye protection when using any type of power tools especially an unguarded cut off wheel. An eye injury might make a huge difference in a Pilot's world.

The 4 place Super Cub is my dream build. 🤤 Having never built an airplane, my concern for a first timer would be the complexity of bringing together parts from several sources. Of course, there are many great resources, but I wonder if a full kit wouldn’t be better for a rookie? I look forward to watching this one come together Greg!

I don't know that I'm a perfectionist but I hear you. I rarely do work that I'm really happy with. I always see something that I could do better if I had the chance. People tell me how great something I did looks and I'd always think, "are we looking at the same thing?" But I've come to terms with it. If the customer is happy with it, it must be good. When the customer is me, then we run into problems like you have there.

I will say it was not on my list, in fact I really was not researching 4 place airplanes to build. I like my Cub a lot and thought if I could combine what I like about the cub in a big Cub that had space I would probably have the Cub I need. I decided on the 4 place cub because I know three people that I respect that say it is the ultimate bush plane. The other reason is, I know if it is not what I want when I am done it will sell fast for a decent profit.

Wondering what this plane will do that Bushwacker won't? I don't understand the reason for a 4 place cub. It seems to me that the cubs narrow fuselage was one of it's most unique strengths. Excited to follow your build.
@mauleguy
@mauleguy 3 жыл бұрын
I know a few guides outfitters using the 4 place and they all say it will pretty much do anything a narrow body will do. If you want to go into that short tight strip keep it light and it will perform right along side of the narrow body cub. If you want to load it up it will preform better than a narrow body cub of equal load. It has better visibility landing then a narrow body cub. I guess we will see when I am done whether it was the right move. It actually has more room inside the cockpit than a Maule by the looks of it. Definitely wider!

Sounds like you have your mind made up. Powder coating may not be as good as epoxy prime and top coat but it is better for my health. I like how it gets into all the hard places to get paint to flow into. I have seen parts that were painted start to rust in the hard to get to places and that makes it just as hard to see a crack too. I will continue using it until I see a serious problem. It's surprising that the maker of the fuselage doesn't put this baggage door in, seems like it's been an absolute for bush operations, even general use for a long time. Don't these manufactures go out and seek the opinions and suggestions of top bush operators, Hell just even paying attention would go along way. to seeing what the market wants.
@quadcub1223
@quadcub1223 3 жыл бұрын
Airframes would probably do the baggage door but the 4 place Airframe is actually “Certified” and they can’t modify anything from the original. If you build it up “Experimental” you can make modifications like Kirk did on my 4 place 896AK and Greg is doing now. The guides in AK have to use the certified version for insurance reasons. You cannot operate for hire with an experimental.
@mauleguy
@mauleguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@quadcub1223 You are correct! Airframes at this point in time will NOT make any modifications to the fuselage even if you are willing to pay. It does make sense. Funny how I mentioned the 4 pl cub from Airframe Alaska as a potential replacement for your Maule and I asked your opinion but you did not answered. I knew you were up to no good anyway. I used to Tig weld for Mc Donnell Douglas at the Long Beach plant in the 80ies. I worked on the the C17 cargo plane. I was very good at it but they treated ne like shit because I am French and was not yet American I used to walk around with a fucking badge that said alien on my shirt. I quit and opened my own business. You should have had Airframe Alaska make the mods for you. If had your budget, I would get the whole frame stress relieved and tempered back to the original 4130 numbers. Especially with the kind of flying you do. With Tig welding you lost 30% of chrome molly original impact and tensile properties. Powder coating is crap it peels off and fractures a lot with vibrations. Does not have the paint elasticity. I wont say anything about Airframe Alaska welders. The few videos where I could see the welds did not impressed me. I would pay an inspection company to run some UT scans on the most critical joints. Tig is notorious for poor root penetration. Ironically Oxy Acetylene is much better. Hope to meet with you one day. Bernard
@mauleguy
@mauleguy 3 жыл бұрын
I have seen a lot of tig welds over the years and theirs very nice as far as I am concerned. Maule mig welds their fuselage and it looks terrible in comparison. I have never seen a fuselage fail from normal use or really even from abuse. I use to be part of the process on landing gear production for a company here in the Pacific NW. I did machine work for several different weldments that went on different aircraft landing gear. I coped the tubes and made lots of different fittings. The company I did the work for always sent their product out for normalization. It was required as far as they were concerned. I use to do my own landing gear for my Maule and I did send it out for normalization the first few sets. Then I noticed no one else did and have not since. Never had a gear fail at a weld of around a weld. I have broken an axle but that was my own fault and not at the weld. Powder coating may not be as good as epoxy prime and top coat but it is better for my health. I like how it gets into all the hard places to get paint to flow into. I have seen parts that were painted start to rust in the hard to get to places and that makes it just as hard to see a crack. As for UT scans I am not worried, But if you ever get a chance to go for a ride with me, you are going to be saying to yourself Greg built this contraption I hope it holds together:))
@bernardmauge8613
@bernardmauge8613 3 жыл бұрын
@@mauleguy Because you never crashed hard. there is a unique elasticity in 4130 that is severely reduced post welding. If one day the dashboard meets your ribcage, this might elicit a sense of regret. I was not referring to weld failure during normal use which is linked to metal fatigue at the HAZ Why do you think they heat treat frames in formula 1 racing ? Lastly pretty welds dont mean shit. Takes a long time to evaluate visual quality, it is part of welding inspector training and experience. I just bought an old French lathe and all my cuts look bad. my buddy down the street is a professional with the same exact machine, and his parts are like chrome. I wonder why
@mauleguy
@mauleguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@bernardmauge8613 Not totally true, I crashed pretty hard that one time. Even the Maule mig welds did not fail. Lots of tubes buckled and bent, but everything was still attached when all was dead quiet! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGPMZmuIncd0b5o. The only tubes that did break: one was the rear spar carry through and the other were the windscreen V brace. The rear spar carry through did break at a cluster in the center but that was where all the pressure would have been because of the leverage of the force on the wings. I repaired that fuselage and even though it looked pretty bad in the pictures once I cut the bent tubes out the structure returned to it's original shape. You can see my jig I built in the video to restore the fuselage. Airplanes are built to be light and strong but unlike a trophy truck they are not built to crash. I still believe there is some crash safety with a 4130 fuselage if you never stop flying the airplane and slow it down you will survive.

Weren't the old original tube and fabric airplanes like T crafts and cubs etc. oxy acetylene welded? I always thought Tig was said to be stronger than gas or especially mig, but I'm no expert.

@bernardmauge8613 3 жыл бұрын
@@mauleguy Good for you. You are also wearing a helmet which is of huge advantage in a crash. I never understood why airplanes do not use doors for protection against buckling like cars do. You have the mass of the engine pushed into the cockpit and nothing side ways to prevent deformation except the roof may be. One would think installing longitudinal bracing in the doors should be mandatory especially in sports category. Be well.
