You should do a follow-up video on when it is a good idea to change systems and how to vet for systems. I invested into the Nikon 1 system and two years into having the camera I had a lens die they fixed it under warranty and then a second lens failed. I went looking to see if I could just get a new lens and found out that Nikon had dumped the entire system. So here I was looking at a camera that was eventually going to become obsolete or cost more than I spend on the camera just keeping the lenses in maintenance. At the time I was looking at the system I was debating whether I should go with Nikon or the micro four thirds. And I regret not going for the micro four thirds. Cuz even if I had decided I wanted to get a different camera body my lenses would have carried. If I had a lens fail other manufacturers made lenses, but with the Nikon you could only get Nikon lenses.

@@mattisulanto What you have said is probably usually true, but not always :) I have switched the system 2 years ago, and here are my thoughts: - I strongly believe no features will ever come to my old system (Nikon APSC DSLR) - as it is, in fact, getting abandoned - features do not always come to the system; I don't think Fuji X-Trans matrix (which I really love for its noise characteristics, once I realized it I don't want to go back to Bayer matrix) will come to any other system any time soon - and sometimes features get removed; example: vertical grip and dual card slots (both very important for me) were available in Nikon D7x00 series for years, but with D7500 they got removed; now there are rumors that the upcoming Fuji X-T5 will not have a vertical grip either - for me this is a serious usability problem, as about 1/3 of my photos are vertical; I really hope Fuji will see a loss of sales and a lot of unhappy voices; I expect I will want to upgrade my X-T4 some day - cost and time to get used to new gear... true, even the lenses has to be turned the other way to attach/detach them, just about everything works differently. But... there used to be a COVID outbreak, I had to cancel all my travel plans (and I travel a lot - this is where I take almost all my photos), so I had plenty of money to spend on new gear, and plenty of time to learn it near home But I agree that switching systems, for example, every 2-3 years is just insane. Regards!

I still use the Canon 20D which I bought in 2004, and it has been serving me quite well. Yes, newer sensors would of course deliver better low-light performance with less noise, but that's not my cup of tea. So as long as the 20 is alive, I'm using it. So far, 18 years and counting.

I think gear commands more attention on KZbin than actual photography for two basic reasons: (1) many men are technofetishists at heart, and (2) at the end of the day it’s actually much easier for many of us to acquire the funds to purchase top-level gear than it is to acquire the talent or skill necessary to make full use of it. Note that I definitely don’t exclude myself, and in fact am speaking from experience.

Totally agree. Actually I think it’s time to start a new era of camera gear. We forget photography and videography and start exercising dynamic range, bokeh, noise ration and etc. Open new KZbin where people start making “Vlog with best bokeh”, “traveling to Thailand with 16 stops of dynamic range camera”, “shot in prores 422 how to fry egg at home”. I would enjoy watching these kind of videos 🤣🤣🤣

I, personally, also find that videos about photos don't actually teach me anything. Photographers seem to talk about whether they're happy with their photos, whether they got good light, or whether they were happy with their compositions, without explaining why or what they're talking about. They break down camera specs, and make direct comparisons when talking gear. They don't do that with their actual photos, and don't give a real sense of why they feel how they do, or directly compare what they think works with what they think doesn't. I can make personal decisions about the hardware I might want to buy and use based on gear reviews. I can't really make decisions about how to take better or different photos based on videos of photographers just taking photos and showing the results to soothing background music.

isn't size of prints and crop-ability a function of resolution, not sensor size? all else being equal, the print size you can make from a 24MP full-frame and 24MP apsc are the same, just the apsc will be 1.5x focal length?

@mattisulanto 2 жыл бұрын
@@mack.attack Yes, but only regarding sensor resolution or pixel count.
@GodfreyMann
@GodfreyMann 2 жыл бұрын
@@mack.attack yes but the maximum density of pixels is fixed for a given generation of chip technology, which means larger sensors will always have higher resolution for a given generation. Right now the highest resolution MFT sensors are only around 33MP while you can find 61MP on full frame, which makes sense given FF is roughly twice the area of MFT. There’s also better lowlight performance because full frame systems have lenses with wide apertures than MFT and therefore let in more light. This isn’t a benefit of sensor size but rather a choice by MFT manufactures to not release as fast glass.

I agree. Sort of. I’m retired and started taking my photography more seriously. I started with M4/3, and that is the core of my work. But since I started collecting vintage lenses I wanted to see what the images would look like on full frame. So I have a Sony A7, Intrigued by Fuji I bought a X-E2s. I’m in agreement with the idea that there hasn’t been a “bad” camera made in 10 years. I agree. I haven’t switched systems so much as expanded my choices. Shooting with vintage lenses has sharpened my skills and shown me how good were the lenses in the 35mm film era were. Additionally, I have a new appreciation for the auto lenses of today. Learning new systems has added to the challenge, but it also exercises my brain.

Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way, after trading in my beloved Canon 5D Mk III for a Fuji camera, took a big hit on the sale, then sold the Fuji to go back to Canon. I now have an R6 with RF lenses that I will keep forever. While it’s images are stunning, they are not a night and day difference from the 5DIII.

Here is my argument for changing systems. I am invested decently deep into Canon. I own an R5 & R6 along with my old 5DMKII. I now own mostly RF glass & highly satisfied with them. Why am I considering switching to Sony? Do I feel Sony is better overall? Not really to a point to make me switch. So why am I still considering it? It's more because I'm annoyed with #Canon at the company level. I very much would like 3rd party lens support from Sigma & Tamron. But Canon refuses to open up their RF mount to them plus they're going to add another price increase to their already very expensive glass. This really annoys me. Some ppl say, just buy the Sigma EF glass & adapt it.. but I don't want that, I want to natively mount my lenses. It adds length & weight to the system. I shoot video often and I really want a great Hybrid system. Canon does an ok job with it and I absolutely love my R5. But... At the moment, Canon's L primes are a bit out of budget. I could definitely make use of a few Sigma Primes. I am just that frustrated with Canon that I've made some considerations towards Sony. And yes, I'd lose some money by selling off my Canon Gear. It's just the point of getting sick of the company not giving me what I want as a customer and deciding that maybe my money should go towards a company that does.

When I started professional wedding photography back in 1974, we used Rolleiflex twin lens 120mm square cameras. Absolutely nothing automatic. For light (flash photography) we used a Honeywell single output flash powered by a 500w Eveready battery, which allowed about a five second recycle time. We would shoot six roles of 220 VPS Kodak 24 exposure films, typically getting a 144 images per wedding. We had to be able to sell between 120 and 130 images of each wedding, Film ISO (ASA) was 100. To get proper exposures there was a constant balance between distance from the subject, fill-flash, and exposure, which was attained by continuous of adjustments of shutter speed, aperture settings, and "available" light. There was never any talk of "switching" systems. If you couldn't produce great "negs" with the camera, you were relegated to making black and white prints in the studio lab. That's why today, I am happy with my Nikon D750 and its array of lenses.

Switching from Canon to Nikon changed everything for me. Noise, shadow detail and dynamics were the most dramatic improvements. I still use my canon gear where applicable, it has had its good sides. So, sometimes, it does make sense to switch! I’ve been using the same studio flashes for all my life though. I still run some from the 80ies, the most modern and expensive one actually turned out to be most unreliable, its flexibility aside. My analog Olympus gear is still from the 80ies, too, I only switched to digital in 2005. I really thought long and hard about the switch to Nikon. Make it count!

I teach photography in my community. People attend my classes because they want to be better photographers. Some have asked which camera makes the best photos. My answer: Your eyes. I teach on the following basis of importance in making a photograph: 1) Light 2) Your eyes/brain 3) The subject 4) Composition 5) The camera. I've never been a systems switcher. Back from the 1970s to 2005 I used 120 negative film Mamiya cameras. When digital cameras started becoming more common place, I bought a Canon G9, and replaced it with a Canon G16 when the G9 failed. I have 24x36 prints from these Canon cameras which are sharp as a tack with excellent color reproduction. In 2018, when I had more money, I bought a Nikon D750 with 50mm f1.4 and Nikkor 24mm -120mm f4.5 lenses. I've since traveled all over the world with that camera and created some gorgeous work. I know how to balance shutter speeds and apertures with the appropriate ISO rating. What else do you need to know? The funny thing is that most of the students now taking my class are there to learn how to make better photographs with their iPhone. They are coming along fine, because I stress lighting and composition... I tell them we are not "technicians" we are "artists". The "camera" is just a tool as a hammer is a tool. The camera doesn't do anything until you pick it up, find a subject, compose it and press the shutter, or with the hammer, hit the nail on the head.

Invest in skills instead of permanent in new equipment. Take part in workshops. If you shoot with Micro4/3, APSc, Fullframe or Medium Format systems,the shape of your photos doesn't change, if you don't change tour way of photographing. The equipment is only a tool what makes possible to shoot good pictures. The photograph is the creator not the camera.

I admit that I wanted to switch from Nikon to Sony because of the lens quality... but there were two or three bodies coming up between my initial decision and the moment when I could have actually done it, so I dropped the idea. I realized that, as you said, my passion is gear, so I simply abandoned the idea because the Sony gear was too expensive. Now, I am very happy with my Nikon because I simply realized that I can use it in the dark! :) Now, that's for digital. When it comes to film gear, I admit to having multiple systems because when I shoot film I take more time to compose and do everything... Thanks for your very clear and instructive video!

In Poland it is called "Passat syndrome", from VW Passat. You need to show your neighbour that you have better car then he has. I think it is same with camera systems. Some are getting camera to boast about having it and to feel better then others. But yes, unless there is a real reason to switch, there is no sense in switching whole system. The reasons I can think about is new camera system does not have features that we really need or when you get up/down in size. Not FF to APS-C but physical gear size. For various reasons: health issues with heavy gear, convenience of using really small camera etc. Last one would be dead camera and manufacturer no longer offering newer camera bodies or even support for older ones. I am gear head, so I think about switching like two times a week, but never did it. Too costly, no gain. I get more from spending money of photobook or photography course (real life or even online) then switching. So I am still using "soon to be death"

Sage advice! I've stuck to Pentax for years and I love the build quality, the ergonomics, the image quality and the plethora of lens, then along came the mirror less revolution so did I switch system? No, I just added Olympus. If I want to image landscapes or buildings or portraits or astro I have my Pentax K1 or KP. If I want to photograph animals or urban life I use my Olympus Pen-f or my OMD-E-M1. I can't see me switching camera systems this decade.

You are absolutely correct on most of the premises you lay out in just the first two minutes. I know this video isn't for me, but as a wildlife photographer who used Nikon bodies and glass, I was seriously considering changing over to Canon or Sony several years ago. The state of affairs with Nikon and the superb AF that other brands in their mirrorless systems offered was enough to have me seriously considering the change. The cost of changing Nikon glass out kept me waiting a little longer. The move could have been justified given the state of affairs at that moment in time. I was a DSLR user and the writing was on the wall for several years prior to that. Then, Nikon released the Z9 - which was ground breaking for its mirrorless lineup and for me. I could now: 1. Continue to use my telephoto, and other f-mount glass, with the FTZii adapter. 2. No black out. 3. Significantly improved AF/AE with improved AI (people/animal eye detect - when appropriate). 4. Silent shooting. 5. Significantly higher frame rates. 6. Pre-capture/post-capture (occasionally used and special). 7. No shutter with only occasional rolling shutter or banding. 8. Sensor shield. 9. Significantly improved video for those that will use it. 10. Bright EVF. 11. Longer battery life. 12. Significant button customization. 13. (and the one that caught my former Nikon buds who jumped to Sony A1) - innovative lenses (400mm f/4.5, 800mm f/6.3, 400mm f/2.8 with built in TC, 600mm f/4 with built in TC - not released). Does any of this make us better photographers? Of course, gear has something to do with it in the right hands and knowing how to maximize the gains in technology. Switching, for switching sake, is insanity. The cost of switching is real. Am I happy I stayed with Nikon. Certainly, but I'm happier yet when I go out to shoot, because the Z9 has made the act of taking photos that much more enjoyable, and it's hard to put a price on that. As Columbo would have said: "Just one more thing". Perhaps you could make a video on why you switched so many times between systems - i.e. what was your rationale? We could learn from that as well! Thanks for sharing.

I agree that switching systems is pointless IF you have very old cameras. I recently switched from Fuji to Micro Four Thirds for video quality reasons and the switch made a very big difference. Also guys who have a very low end camera should eventually look at a more professional setup when they go professional. I agree regarding lenses, I lived my Fuji lenses and I just got lucky in buying very good Leica and Sigma lenses when I switched.

I agree with your sentiments, I learned many many years ago that dependable durable photo gear does not require regular upgrades. I have several pro digital bodies the oldest is 22 years old and the newest being six years old. I can still make great images from the 4 MP camera Canon 1 D Classic. I have great Canon L-lenses that works with the oldest Canon body as well as the newest Canon DSLR body. I know the capabilities and limitations of my gear. Why should I dump my glass and bodies for a new system? Potential customers who may want my prints could careless what camera system I used Mirrorless or DSLR. I remember meeting guys on the football field and other sporting venues who wanted to talk gear while I was trying to get record amazing images to tell a story of a game. The Canon 1D Classic and the Canon 1DX Mark II has maintained the same feel and layout with a few minor differences, thus, for 26 years including the last Canon 1 Series last Pro Film Body ergonomics has been consistent in grip and menu layout. I am not changing anytime soon!

I love it when people change their gear, they're often the people who don't take many pictures so it gives lots and lots of opportunities to buy excellent, little used equipment at second-hand prices ..... it's exactly the same with my hobby of amateur radio, people trade equipment in every year in the hope it'll make them a better operator whilst other folk benefit from their lack of wisdom.

@@mattisulanto Ahh, they just can't help themselves, can they ...... while this continues there will always be bargains to be found. At least that "shutter count" is electronic, I once worked out that my most used Nikon F3 had over 250,000 exposures through it, mostly using motor-drive, yet even now it works perfectly although it's a bit squeaky ..... and that's despite most of my work being done using a Linhof 5x4. PS ......your presentations are wonderful and your understated sense of humour is a pleasure to listen to, whilst I bought a Panasonic GX9 as my first proper digital camera after watching one of your reviews on here ..... There are cases when changing camera system makes sense. For instance I had a Canon 7D (most successful enthusiast Canon camera) with lenses. That camera is APS C and I wanted to go to full frame. For this I had to buy a new body and new lenses as Canon APS-c lenses cannot be used on Canon full frame bodies. The best FF system I could afford then was the Nikon D750. So I switched and it was a wise move I think.

I am happy with the Sony Alpha mount/Minolta AF system and I am happy with my Minolta film bodies, but I would really like some features that I don't have on my Sony bodies. I am almost certain Sony isn't going to release any more Alpha mount cameras as the DSLR is dead now, but I could get most of what I want out of an A99 II but, to spend so much on a body that isn't in production any longer worries me.
@Psychid5

I mostly agree but not entirely. I agree that switching camera bodies every couple years doesn't bring much improvements and getting new tech is rather exciting. Having called myself a photographer for past 17 or so years I've switched bodies 5 times and every time it was a vertical jump to better tier of cameras rather than lateral jump for same tier with minor upgrades. The improvement in image quality and usability has always been drastic and that improvement itself has given me a motivation boost in times when I lacked the drive to go out and shoot. Having said that I've stuck with canon and invested to quality optics instead of the best body. Next switch will be to mirrorless and with newer focus technology I will likely get the focus right more often giving me more useful pictures. Thank you for the video! This really gives something to think about.

Hear, hear! Couldn't agree more. This may be a caricature, but I find many in the KZbin crowd are young bucks wanting the latest and greatest. Go to a reputable camera forum and you'll find seasoned camera vets who learn their (often older) gear because they have stuck with it and have come close to mastering it. GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) is so alive and well in our contemporary technological era. However, you do not have to have cutting edge camera technology to take good photos. The cliche is look at Ansel Adams or the like but still it is true. And I ask, is the constant drainage of finances for the latest and greatest a responsible way to use our money? I say that pointing the finger back at myself.

For some of us, learning how to handle new gear is fun, but not if money dictates otherwise. I've been with the same camera system since film, now digital, of course, making sure that money spent was more lens focused, pun intended, than camera body. That means I lag a bit on the newest features, but even without IBIS and animal eye detect, I've nearly always gotten the shot I was after. Maybe that's an easier dynamic for those of us who started our "photo joy" during the film days. Auto focus? Cool! :-)

I chose my camera based on how it felt on my hand and how easy it was for me to reach the controls. All the other features are not worth any painstaking decision. All main camera systems take good enough pictures for the kind of general photography that I do. Better to focus on learning photography and practice a lot.

A lot of great « truths » in this video probably coming from a guy who probably already experiment the switch :)… as I did and that s why I completely agree with him. KZbin is increasing this phenomena by publishing thousands of tests on new hardware putting one month after the other one new model on a unecessary piédestal… all of them been sponsored by brand who are the only winners in this area where camera and lenses are more and more expensive. So an advice : don t look at vidéos speaking of gears but on video speaking of photography. Full point.
