A healthier population would cut cost for any type of medical system. US spends the most per persons, while the SAD keeps everyone sick and in turn cost stays high. Massive profits being made in the insurance industry while we suffer from bad health and high healthcare cost in the US. Profits over everything, even peoples lives.

I live in one of the most expensive places in a Canada and have been living below the poverty line for the past five years and I can still afford to eat healthy plant based foods AND still buy much of my food/other products from sustainable, and fair trade sources. This is not a matter of people not being able to afford to eat healthy, it’s a matter of people not being thoughtful/creative enough to move their spending habits around to afford a proper/sustainable/ethical diet.

I think it's also about people not prioritizing their health. Even if healthy food was expensive (which I don't feel that it is, if you're wise about how you spend your money), how you eat is one of the most important things for your health, perhaps even more important than exercise, although they are both very important. Some people would rather eat a bunch of extremely cheap, processed food and save their money for stuff instead, or they don't want to put their time into food preparation, even though cooking your own food from plants is the most healthy diet. A lot of people just assume that it's expensive to eat plant-based without trying to figure out a budget. If you eat meat and dairy and haven't thought about a budget, it will be very expensive, more so even. Sorry for the long comment. ^.^

Amet, this is not a question of « taking over the world », it simply means that hospitals, schools and elders homes all over the country will reajust their menus with something containing way less meat and dairy which, at the end of the day, is excellent for our planet and our health. Furthermore, this new guide will serve as an example of what a « good nutrition » is for children in schools and patients in hospitals, which will help them to diversify their menus and learn new, delicious, healthy , cheap(er) and sustainable ways to eat for their entire life. At the end of the day this can only be interpreted as a much needed change in every aspect!

AmetReloads Listen, I’m not implying that the guide is some sort of vegan propaganda, just that it’s a scientific improvement. Now, I don’t know if you’re Canadian, but if you were you would know that this is document is, in fact, important : teachers use it in primary schools, highschools and even universities to teach the basics of nutrition ; hospitals use it as a guide to conceive their menus and school cafeterias do too ; it serves as a justification to give free milk to children everyday in schools and kindergartens, etc. I personally remember having to memorize it in many classes as a child and nowadays I work in a primary school and our student’s parents are asked to prepare their kids lunches according to this guide. Furthermore, the new guide specifically says that cholesterol is not an enemy and that processed food, saturated fat and sugar are the real problems. Please, read it carefully and learn about its impacts before being agressive as I was only rejoicing.

I think that people who might have a more limited budget should know what the healthiest foods are, so that they can focus the little that they have on getting the most nutrition. I don't know if it was a joke everywhere, but in Michigan there was a joke about eating beans and rice because you weren't getting paid enough--sort of like how people make jokes about collage students eating roman noodles now. Most plant foods are pretty cheap if you're willing to cook it yourself, and if you're not buying eggs, cheese, milk, and several pounds of meat a week, then you've got more money to get whole grains and dry beans to add to the veggies you've should be eating anyway.

I think when food inequality comes up, it's not so much about not recommending vegetables, but recommending vegetables that are accessible, cheap, easy to store and prepare. Fresh greens might look nice, but they do require one to shop often and prepare their foods within a daily routine.

I’m happy with the food guide, for now. We, Canadians, all had a chance to contribute our opinions to it, which I liked. I know that I took full advantage and included everything that I have learned on the benefits of a vegan diet. I look forward to a new chart in a couple of years, which totally removes animal and fish products, and includes health activities, for our well-being, like mandatory visits to animal sanctuaries for petting and hugging happy cows, pigs, goats, chicken, lambs, geese, ducks, rabbits....you get the idea.😄👍

These changes are a great first step and yes hopefully the next revision will eliminate animal products entirely. I met with our school principal today to request plant based meal options be added to our hot lunch program menu. He was very receptive and I feel confident that there will be options available when the ordering is opened for the next time period. We offered to help provide recipes and resources for educating. I was very happy to see this progress! They actually had a way for Canadians to contribute to the new guide by answering a bunch of survey questions about the last version of the guide and where we wanted to see the new guide differ. I remember being so bolstered by the number of comments at the end of the survey left by vegans/vegetarians/plant based Canadians who wanted to see more emphasis on plant foods. It seems like this influence, from the Canadian people ourselves, had a real impact. It’s such a wonderful feeling to have the government actually listen to its people! Canadian here. I can speak a bit about the recent obesity spike from ~15-20% from about 1975 to 2000, and suddenly shooting up to above 30%. Much of it had to do with very cult-like diet regiments, mainly the Atkins diet, paleo diet, and the ketogenic diet is the most recent one. A few people had astounding results on them; but that is largely because they cut all the potato chips, cakes, and fast food out of their diet, and at the same time, began starving themselves of calories. These diets caught on like a wildfire (half my office), and when nearly everyone else failed, they ended up blaming their own short-comings over the fact that they ended up heavier than they ever were before. No one pays attention to the fact that the healthiest and most vibrant people in the office are all whole-food vegans. They think we're the cultists =)

Yes, it's like the Belgium 2017 food guidelines - they finally stopped listening to the industry's money and started listening to science instead! 😁🌱 In Belgium, our food triangle starts with the vegetables, fruits, legumes (and tofu), whole grains, potatoes, nuts, and seeds: the foods that have positive effects on health, with no adverse effects. 😊 The second layer are animal proteins: the foods that have some essential nutrients, but also have adverse effects AND a high environmental impact. (They encourage that fortified soy milk is a great alternative for cow's milk.) The third layer consists of animal fats and red meat: because of its environmental impact and because "too much of it can be dangerous" (the average Belgian person IS having too much). And the final category, outside of the triangle is the ultra processed foods. This contains alcohol, soda, sweets, salt and processed meats (because of their risk of causing colon cancer, stroke AND type 2 diabetes)! This caused a lot of drama because farmers felt threatened 💁🏻‍♀️

I saw someone argue against the new Canada Food Guide by saying that eating as much meat as you want is the ideal diet as long as it's from local, pasteurized animals (instead of non-local, factory farmed animals). They never explained why or provided any evidence. Not one study. That was their argument against the new food guide. Also, I saw a semi with a trailer. On the trailer it had a picture of eggs and it read "Eggs. Natural and delicious." I thought, "really? eating another animal's period is NATURAL...really?" I'm a Canadian vegan. Although the food guide isn't completely plant-based, it's a massive step in the right direction. Canada is a little far behind when it comes to veganism, vegan products. I'm lucky enough to live in a progressive city with new vegan cafés and restaurants as well as supermarkets offering vegan options. But I know many towns in Canada (like my hometown in Alberta) aren't as progressive and one of their main sources of money is cow flesh. "Alberta Beef" is what they call it. So this is a huge step for Canada as a whole. Yes, it will cause backlash and people will be upset but so did the process of abolishing slavery, right? I'm also glad they changed the food guide to a more plant-based diet. It will be implemented in schools so the future generations will learn earlier on in their lives. I hope the food guide will be 100% plant-based someday.

You will get ill just like most vegans do. It's just a matter of time. A step in the right direction is to put animal protein in your diet. Why do all vegans harp on studies? They do this why withering away.
@FieldOfFireflies
@FieldOfFireflies 5 жыл бұрын
@@timothyhudson9976 Do you have any evidence showing that a plant-based diet makes people ill? Any stats on the number of vegans currently "withering away"? If not, that which is asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence. Where are all the sick, deathly ill vegans in hospitals? The only people in hospitals that I see are sick, deathly ill people on animal-based diets. If animal protein is so healthy, why do so many people who eat it have heart disease, cancer, and diabetes? And why are so many people on animal-based diets in the range of obesity? Surely, if animal products were actually healthy for us, they shouldn't cause these horrible, potentially fatal diseases, right? But this has been proven over and over again. Also, the World Health Organization and the American CANCER Society have deemed processed meat a group 1 carcinogen (same group as cigarettes/tobacco and asbestos) and red meat as a group 2A carcinogen. These are huge, massive organizations who have nothing to do with veganism. I've been vegan for nearly a year and I feel healthier than ever before. "Why do vegans harp on studies?" They aren't just any studies. Many of the studies we refer to are the most comprehensive nutritional studies ever done, such as 'The China Study', which concludes "eating foods that contain any cholesterol above 0 mg is unhealthy". Animal products are the only ones that contain cholesterol, therefore they are unhealthy. We use studies and research done by scientists and medical professionals because it's the most accurate way to get and compile data. The only way you wither away on a plant-based diet is if you don't eat, or if you don't eat enough. The largest group of medical professionals (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) have this to say about a vegan diet: “It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes.” jandonline.org/article/S2212-2672(16)31192-3/pdf

@@FieldOfFireflies just an FYI - I usually look at criticisms. It didn't take much to find some concerns about the China study. I just used "The Google" and the search terms "China Study" "nutrition" "debunked". deniseminger.com/2010/07/07/the-china-study-fact-or-fallac/ is one source. I'm not impressed with any nutritionist so far. Either they were bribed and their advice is suspect or they weren't bribed but they have no real longitudinal studies to make their case clearly enough. I'd love for there to be some magic study that spelled out what humans should eat. But it feels that often, studies are biased. If not from a money perspective, than a personal perspective. I look at population data. Sure - theoretically veganism sounds like it works. I mean - I think roasted broccoli and a lentil stew sound delicious. Or an Indian dahl with some naan. But I also think a juicy steak with fat and buttered herb mushroom sauce and a nice bit of grilled asparagus sounds just as delicious. The key is how easy and workable this diet is for the average person. You seem like somebody who loves her diet. Congratulations. I'd go stark raving mad. And FYI - I used to eat vegan/vegetarian for 6 days a week and had one meat meal on Sunday. I've got plenty of veggie dishes that I love and can easily make. And the key from that is "I used to". BTW - the key takeaway from your quote is "appropriately planned vegetarian ". I've seen too many reports of dead babies because their vegan parents couldn't bother to plan an appropriate vegan diet for them. broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/wjqbem/judge-convicts-parents-after-baby-dies-from-vegan-diet I doubt many vegans, given that they blindly believe any study that supports their claims, is going to adequately address the unique nutritional needs of an infant.

@@jenniferhunter4074 Okay but that is the weakest source of information. She's also biased, which makes your source way less credible. If you look at an evidence hierarchy pyramid (which is what all doctors, scientists, etc. use to discern the quality of evidence of information/studies, etc). The link you provided is an editorial/opinion, which is the lowest form of evidence. This means the highest risk of bias and the lowest quality of evidence. You can't use that to debunk a study as massive and as comprehensive as The China Study. Show me evidence like a SYSTEMATIC REVIEW or META-ANALYSIS. And make sure it's completely unbiased and peer-reviewed by ACTUAL medical professionals. Not some biased blog post by some nobody. That is terrible evidence. Also, I just found this about her post claiming The China Study is bs: www.scribd.com/doc/76821348/It-s-Official-Denise-Minger-now-Exposed-as-DEBUNKED-The-China-Study-Troubleshooting-the-Non-Vegetarian-Rawfoodsos-Paleo-Fallacy-and-Mark-Sisson In this they write: "Note: [Minger addresses] only 1 chapter of the China Study book [which] was devoted to the china "survey project", which is only one, in a chain of experimental approaches." And points out many more of her failures of debunking The China Study (which is the most comprehensive nutritional study ever done and it's backed up by a plethora of MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS). In the link I provided, it also shows all the doctors who backed up the study as well as all of their credentials. You didn't debunk The China Study, sweetie. Nice try though.

Taste does not infer whether a food/dish is healthy or not. A vegan diet is super easy and workable. I've only been vegan for 11 months, soon to be a year and yeah, I do love it. I love the convenience, the food is DELICIOUS, and the ease of it. I thought I would hate a plant-based diet but I love it. It's so fun and exciting because the possibilities of dishes/meals are endless. There are 70,000 varieties of edible plants. So you can spend the rest of your life eating a new dish for every meal. Just because "you used to" and then stopped is not valid evidence to prove anything about a plant-based diet. Okay, dead babies tho. How many babies/toddlers have been born and been fed animal-based diets and have died? If you do any diet improperly, you're going to have problems. Obviously, these parents fed their child improperly. That's not anything to do with the diet, it's everything to do with the parents. You can't blame a diet for parents negligence. I'm sure plenty of children and infants die while eating an animal-based diet but no one blames the diet even though it could very well be a factor or the reason for their death. If you feed your child chicken nuggets and big macs or don't feed your kid enough, they're going to have health problems. There's a female bodybuilder named JEHINA MALIK and she has been eating a plant-based diet SINCE BIRTH. There's also plenty of vegan families on youtube (one being Family Fizz) who have children who have been eating plant-based diets since birth and they are all perfectly healthy. Go check out Family Fizz. They have 2 daughters who have been vegan since birth, the youngest is still a baby. Look how healthy they both are. And if these children can thrive on a plant-based diet from day 1, then it's obviously not anything to do with the diet otherwise they should be dead too. But they are healthy, happy, strong, hitting all the milestones for their age. Their youngest is even hitting milestones early. So you can't generalize and say a plant-based diet isn't healthy because some parents did it improperly. Again, if you do ANY diet improperly, underfeed or overfeed your child, they will have health problems. It's not hard to feed your child properly. Again, this article you provided is another high-risk of bias and low quality of evidence source. Show me an UNBIASED/PEER-REVIEWED systematic review, meta-analysis on the amount of babies who died on a plant-based diet. I want to see it backed up on a study. As a baby, I couldn't digest cow breast milk, so my mom gave me soy milk and I'm still alive. So how do you explain that? Also, most, if not all general practitioners get only a few hours of nutritional training in med school so they don't really know anything when it comes to nutrition. So they aren't credible sources when it comes to nutrition: -Red Meat and Processed Meat Consumption and All-Cause Mortality (meta-analysis): academic.oup.com/aje/article/179/3/282/103471 -Adventist Study: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4191896/ -Vegan Diet Reduces Inflammation More than AHA-Recommended Diet: www.pcrm.org/news/health-nutrition/vegan-diet-reduces-inflammation-more-aha-recommended-diet -Vegan Diet MOST Effective At Preventing Heart Disease: www.livekindly.co/vegan-diet-effective-preventing-heart-disease-american-heart-associations-recommended-diet/ You Don’t Need Meat To Be Healthy: veganuary.com/myths/dont-need-meat-healthy/ -Vegans 42% less heart disease mortality, etc: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4073139/ -Vegan Blood Protein Levels Higher than Omnivores: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0065242309470070 -American Cancer Society Carcinogens List: www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/general-info/known-and-probable-human-carcinogens.html A Plant-Based Diet, Atherogenesis, and Coronary Artery Disease Prevention: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4315380/ Dietary cholesterol and egg yolks: Not for patients at risk of vascular disease: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2989358/ -Eggs Are Unhealthy: nutritionfacts.org/2015/08/20/what-do-eggs-do-to-our-arteries/ -Milk Is Unhealthy: nutritionfacts.org/topics/milk/ -Red Meat Is Unhealthy: nutritionfacts.org/topics/red-meat/ The largest group of medical professionals (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) have this to say about a vegan diet: “It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes.” jandonline.org/article/S2212-2672(16)31192-3/pdf

This new guide finally (FINALLY!!!!) better aligns my values (and my own eating habits) with those that I can now 'officially' recommend to my students. Hallelujah! Definitely my favorite of your presentations, and not just because I'm Canadian. Vr well explained, loved it. For people who think they can't afford to eat like this; when I transitioned to vegan my food bills went way down, which surprised me at the time. The only thing I think you left out analysing this 60 page document was; if you are going to be buying packaged food, read the label. Fantastic!!! We have Justin Trudeau up here (no trades, no Trump) who is very big on ecology, also part of whatever Canada can call a dynasty; my Dad was a huge fan of Trudeau senior; yes war measures act during the separatist extremist attacks in Quebec, but responsible for saying brilliant things like, 'government has no business in the bedrooms of the nation' a brilliant health care system that still has legs, no we don't have a nanny state, and people like Jean Chretien who told George Bush the younger to fuck off but we would always commit to peace keeping forces. Perfect? Are you kidding? But I'm glad my parents immigrated here after WWII. Your country is way too powerful; and we apologize when we bump into furniture. Usually a grain of truth in those stereotypes. I full-heartedly applaud you for bringing this information to people's attention. Way to go!!!! On the minus side, we exported Jordan Peterson south to you guys who only eats meat and doesn't know the difference between Neitschze and Dostoievsky (am always sloppy when I post, sorry). I'm sort of hoping he is an annoying mosquito who will buzz off, who knows. Tx again!!!

No. No. No. No. No. 6:43 Stop subsidies and you begin to even out the market. In the U.S. the amount of subsidies used by the livestock industry also includes crops for feed. The thinking that taxing more which is what a subsidy is since the consumer ends up paying it in the long run, is unbalanced economically speaking. Stop subsidies entirely. The market will adjust and the market will be more innovative in the full production of food to make it from farm to home. Don't add, you take away. Make the meat, dairy, and egg industries fend for themselves. This reduces the burden on the taxpayer, forces companies to find new methods to provide to the consumer and in this instance, it would reduce the amount of animal products on the market. It's why BigAgriculture and BigFood are huge in lobbying governments to help them provide. The people will get what they need if government gets out of the way. The current system perpetuates the reliance on animal products. Don't add, take away.

Is there no single reason for you to imagine why subsidizing might make sense? Like protection of local production in a global market? I'm sure China can produce not only milk but also pretty much everything else cheaper than Canada. But I'm sure you are not concerned about that are you? Sometimes it's good to use the brain and think a little deeper. Markets do adjust indeed but it's all price driven and if local production is too expensive guess what happens...

@@ffmdotcom No, I don't see any reason to. Subsidies are well-intended but net nothing but a financial grab from those that need it the least. Look at the meat and dairy industries, look at the other commodities like corn, wheat, and soy...not only do those crops provide unhealthy/species inappropriate food for the animal industries, they also provide crap food for humans like Twinkies, corn syrup for the beverage industry, etc. If an industry can't sustain itself on its own merits, it needs to be buried deep and those that can innovate and make life better and cheaper will win...but not on the backs of taxpayers.
@SittingKittyColorado
@SittingKittyColorado 5 жыл бұрын
@@shawndarling5855 -- What about them? It doesn't matter. Remove the subsidies and you remove a lot of inequity that is on the backs of the taxpayer to start with. These industries are parasites. They pray on the taxpayer because they lobby governments around the world to give them money. And now vegans are coming out saying they want to see a tax on meat?!? No! Lobby government to stop giving these giant companies money! Remove the corporate welfare and you even out the playing field. I am WFPB, an anarchist (former libertarian party county chair) and have a broader view of the system than a grand majority of people do. I have done the research on the economics of food, the health of food, the system of food, the health system, the lobbying of governments, etc. The more we tax the people, the less people can afford to live. Remove subsidies and you reduce the hit on the common person because it all gets handed down in the end. No matter how you break it down, each new tax, fee or regulation ups the cost of living and creates more government which then needs more tax to sustain its regulatory environment. It all "sounds good" until you better understand the system.

@@SittingKittyColorado I really don't know how much the subsidies are helping the beef and pork farmers. But I know they are really helping the dairy farmers. Because at least in my part of the country two dairy farms go bust a day. In fact my in laws are slowly making the transition from dairy to beef. I also know that if farmers here just grew plants for human CONSUMPTION they would not make it. Due to the time for plants to grow and are ready for harvest. Then they would get a one time check for the year. They would have property taxes, income taxes, insurance, fuel and other expenses. A little hard to grow plants when your fields are covered in a foot of snow and are also frozen. I do raise my own chickens and have a garden but the wildlife pretty much gets a free meal. My family mainly lives on wild game and fish caught out of the Mississippi river and the Iowa river. So I know where my food comes from.
