I had a situation with a couple wanting to buy an engine. I hadn't pulled if from the car yet, so they came to hear it. I got a bad feeling pretty quickly, and confirmed my suspicions when he didn't want to hear it run, and mentioned "you've got some cool stuff around here. (!!!!) Luckily my phone dinged with a joke text from a buddy- "oh, that's my neighbor, he didn't recognize your truck, and was just checking on things. He works from home, so he keeps an eye on the place" They quickly hightailed it with a "I'll get with you on payday" never to be seen or heard from again. I never sell anything that can't be hauled to town anymore.

Good little PSA for everyone. The bad part is they are constantly coming up with new methods, so you really do need to keep an eye out at all times. You can almost guarantee the one time you are a little lax will be the time somebody Takes advantage. Thanks for the video.

Buddy of mine bought a grand national project car, been sitting in the same spot for years. Got a title with the car. Got excited and started ordering parts before he registered and got it running and cleaned up and put some interior in it. Decides he better register it before he gets too deep in it. Car comes up stolen. The previous owners had a duplicate title and it got reported stolen and since his title was older than theirs he ended up losing the car and never got a dime out of it. The guy he bought it from was friends with original owner but somehow they never knew where it was.

My buddy thought he sold his Harley and got the "Here's your "check", there is $2k more than we agreed upon, that way YOU can pay the transporter I'm sending to pick it up." My friend isn't dumb and pulled the parachute on that deal. Good way to lose your ride and a few extra bucks.

Damn. This was my biggest fear when I bought a truck from New Mexico. I checked around and had several long conversations with a few transport companies. I never had a good feeling about it, and ultimately decided to make the trip myself. We left Friday evening from Washington, and were back on Tuesday. 3600 miles round trip. It was worth every penny of fuel and trailer rental. It ended up costing about the same as the cheapest transport company. I'd do it again for the right vehicle.

When selling items, I prefer to meet at a local location in case shit goes south. Luckily I work two blocks away from the local police station, so I have people meet me there. biggest problem with any FB/CL transaction is the people not showing up.

azmax623, you are absolutely correct. I only meet buyers at a goodwill location two minutes from my house. Very well lit and the police are always in the area. Plus I've been stood up and screwed many times, so two minutes from my house isn't a big deal. NEVER let anyone come to your home. The thing that sucks about selling cars is the title has your name and address on it. I wish it didn't because that's always running through my head when I sell one is what is this asshole going to do to me after they buy the car.

When setting up a time to meet, I always confirm with them prior to the time. If no contact, or they ghost you, I assume it’s a no show. If someone is really interested, 99% of the time any ‘normal’ person will reply right away, and be good at communicating throughout transaction…

A somber warning Rob, thank you for the wisdom my friend! In 1989 I traded a clean Black running 1970 Challenger for a not running 1970 Chrysler 300-H (a 1000 made), the nice man promised to rebuild the not running 440 in it. Months went by & I found out he took my nice Challenger & the 300-H & skipped town. A powerful life lesson I never forgot.

#1 scam on Facebook marketplace is renting houses. You just post a home for rent with a cheap price for rent. And then have people pay application fees. You can literally make more money each month, on these fees. Than actually renting out the house.

A good friend of mine bought a 2 year old diesel (Denali that was loaded) from a guy in Houston, TX. The guy gave him the title and sold it for cash on a Sunday. My friend got a loan, ran the VIN, CarFax and all. He got the truck and title, drove it home, and went for inspect to find out it was stolen from a dealership a couple days before. He lost the truck and all his money, and the title was likely a very good fake. According to the dealership, the check the guy that bought it from them was a very good fake, and the bank caught it a few days after the purchase, so they reported it stolen, but my friend already has the truck states away by then. Houston police said it happens so often they couldn’t help. They would “do what they could”.

I couldnt agree more to be careful. It always irritates me when I inquire about an ad on marketplace, they don't want to answer questions online because they "don't check facebook much" but yet they replied to my question in under an hour. They then post a phone number, which can be a local one. My most recent one was about some windows, dont want to type up sizes online, come on man, I'm not calling someone when I don't even know if the item listed will even work for my application. And don't think its only the big metro areas that they target, I live in the middle of nowhere, so much so I know pretty much someone to check on stuff for me within a 100 mile radius!

100% on point. Honest people don't think about all the scenarios you present. My typical marketplace rundown goes like 50% "is this still available" - with no response after a yes. 20% - "will you take/ I'll give you (X) cash today for it" ... or just give it away... no. 20% scammers with shippers and certified over amount checks, the phone code bs. etcetc... no, in person cash only. 5% "can you hold it till friday/payday?"... no first come first serve. 4+% with a million questions and no money. And finally less than 1% real interested buyers. So if I ever pull a first million$... it won't be from facebook lol. Thanks for sharing

You’re right in many ways BUT it gets frustrating being the legit mechanic trying to help a friend from getting screwed as well. Shit goes both ways. Nothing I hate worse is to drive a long ways with cash to buy a car and the seller is so paranoid about who you are and your life story when all you want is to make a car deal . Not hating on your story and know you mean well but it does go both ways. NOW you should make a story about all the things to watch out for with bullshitters looking to screw people with junk cars because that happens a lot more to be honest. At the end of the day we just need more honest people in this world period!

But he's a car guy at heart, and he respects and loves his family, and he knows how to have a good time.... THAT'S what comes off of him in waves if you ever meet him. I stopped in at his old shop in Greenville just on a lark, during a business trip... and he opened his door and welcomed me in. We had a great chat and I met Matt as well that day. I saw the surf beetle and the '32 Ford in person as well as two or three of the OBS trucks that were in the shop at the time. He's real. The business is real. And Matt is real. Just ask him where you can review his portfolio of available vehicles if you are in the market,, but, if you're just looking to keyboard audit him,,, be ready to get called 'Casey'.. Travis is yet another real character in Rob's world and I have met him too, at my work. If you get a chance, drop by the new shop in Seneca and say hello.
