I was just stunned by this. Although technically what he did was prevent such breaks from being mandated. The result is the same though. The worst companies will continue to not provide breaks, and if that cuts costs, they will win in the marketplace. Other companies will feel forced to do the same in order to compete. I would think that we would have learned by now that, in the absence of regulations, a “race to the bottom” will always occur IF that benefits profits (or even the survival of a business). Also, regulations have to be enforced, and preventing enforcement is another political strategy pursued by business lobbyists. OSHA was gutted in the 80s as a successful example of preventing meaningful enforcement.

I rarely comment but this is so relevant to me. I quit doing residential carpentry about six months ago. I hated doing it but it kept me afloat after losing my previous livelihood in graphic design during the Great Recession (2008). Recently, the stark daily reminder that I was essentially a slave became too much to ignore. I was building new custom homes or additions for people’s second or third homes or rentals but couldn’t buy anything for myself. I chose to quit and face the possibility of a hard downward spiral. It’s very hard to change course from trades work, I’ve found (can’t imagine why.) If the people who do the essential work that keeps everyone alive (food, water, shelter, sanitation) can’t participate in the basic path toward financial security in this country, we have a fundamental problem. Something has to be done about the speculative value of housing. There has to be limits to how much the wealthy and corporations can own of things which everyone depends on to live.

I've had multiple surgeries on my back, both shoulders, ribs, multiple muscle tears and left knee replacement. Like me many have lifelong injuries, many have become addicted to pain meds, and many of my friends have taken their lives because of the pain they're stuck with. I'm 50 now and already retired from construction and started my own businesses. But it takes a special type of person to want to work in construction and be a happy person. I sent all my kids to school so they would never have to have the hard life I had. It's not a glamorous life but it pays the bills nicely.

Politicians who campaign on a platform of deregulation are not your friends, no matter how much smoke they blow about it increasing jobs. First, if it’s a regulation it puts all the companies on an even playing field. They all must build it into the cost of doing business and you don’t have some companies bidding low because they aren’t providing those worker protections. Second, the need for the work doesn’t go away because a regulation exists. Houses and data centers still need to be built. Prices may or may not have to go up, but the demand will still be there. And if the regulations prevent a significant number of death and disablements, perhaps more things will get built because the field is losing fewer people. Taxpayers benefit too, even if prices go up, because the cost to society of disabled workers and impoverished families is simply staggering. Finally, I think about the grief of the families when they lose a son, a husband, or a father. If I were a worker, I would fight for laws that would keep my family from experiencing that devastation.

In fact I worked with wrestlers that got tired before I did in my glory days of getting things done and keeping workers producing. I was the shop hero trying to get my graduation hours until my back gave out and I got sick and became bankrupt while sitting on the health insurance waiting list because the Union didn't offer apprentices health insurance until after the policy change the was happening. I don't get it, I work as a movie theater employee putting popcorn in bags and handing out soda, sweeping a little here and there, so why do some of these guys working out in the hot sun lifting heavy things all day get paid the same as me? I get told different things by different construction workers. Some tell me the pay is better than burger flipper jobs and others say it's the same. If there's more room for growth within construction, and if there are indeed more hours available then I would prefer that if my goal was to make more money. But I'm not looking to make more money, I simply consume less than I make to make things work. Anyway, whenever I work these cashier jobs and see a construction worker coming through my lane, I treat them with the utmost respect because I know they're out there doing REAL work. Funny how being promoted to team lead at any McWagies goes to people's heads like they're so much more prestigious and skilled than their co-workers. My team leads at Harkins Theatres run around the concessions like headless chickens over small surges in activity at the movie theater. They're easily irritated and panic over putting chicken tenders in boxes at a faster than usual pace. Pay construction workers better! Without them, my job wouldn't exist.

As a formal construction worker, the industry is hard, doesn't matter what type of scope of work you are working in, the industry is toxic. You will see a lot of regulations, but with the industry pressure and companies that do not care about workers as humans, it is constantly: A GO... GO... GO and GO AND GO. The easy way to fix this is to take time off, but REALY TIME OFF, no phone, no emails, JUST OFF. When a person is OFF is OFF no exemptions. This industry will pay good but the (CORPORATES) believe that they own you, when I say own you they believe they own your body, your sold, your community, including your family, your friends, and YOUR TIME. Be very carful, take time off.

The labor laws in the US are completely biased towards management. Guys are working 60-80hrs a week with very little pto/sick time, no support if they're injured(short term disability is 60% base pay--which is calculated based on a 40hr week generally even though guys almost all work overtime in any blue collar trade AND the 60% is taxed at the same rate as your normal income), everything is expensive, etc. Yeah, there is a problem in this country and it's never gonna change. I'm not even a lefty but the US is exploitative of the people at the bottom who literally build this country and keep its infrastructure running so people in airconditioned offices can give themselves a bigger bonus each quarter.

People in offices have it better, but believe me, they also get treated like the personal property of corporations. The physical toll is different, but it eventually destroys bodies as well. So those people may not have it as bad as you do, but they have every reason to be your ally in getting better protections and security for employees in the US.

He was in so much pain that he ended his life at 4 years post injury. He will forever be 42. I miss you daily, Deedas.

i was union trained on ppe and hazardous environments to protect myself. my union health insurance and benefits were fantastic. collective bargaining gave me a voice in my protection. i was well trained to be a skilled worker and produce a product that was safe for the public. i was not protected at the company . it was dangerous. the culture was toxic and high pressure , pitting crews against each other and forever increasing productivity expectations with less crew. my favorite foreman committed suicide while on a job and left behind a little baby. i was devastated. the construction workers are the most important people doing very dangerous jobs that insure safe buildings , roads and infrastructure. companies want to make big money so they pressure their workers to the point of breaking. i don't see this ever changing. i got out.

I never understood the importance of unions when I was growing up. They had an unsavory reputation for violence and mob connections. But I also knew workers in unions who made good money and swore by the difference they made in getting good pay and treatment from their employers. Years after unions had almost disappeared from the landscape, I began to realize how critical they had been in improving the lives of blue and white collar workers alike.

Why are you bringing women into something that's about suicidal men? What, you think they all just need to get laid and that'll solve their horrible working conditions caused by corporate greed?

@@aliannarodriguez1581no they don’t. If they did, women wouldn’t be divorcing them at a 90% rate(that’s if they even had a wife to begin with. We all know modern women view construction workers as beneath them). I wouldn’t be surprised if women were the actual leading cause for why these men commit “un-aliving”

I have a Class A with doubles, triples, and tankers. I'm always getting job offers for construction. Nah. I'm okay. I've worked in many areas of construction. I stopped working construction, because I don't get to see my family. I had kids for a reason and I didn't get to see them. I don't even get to raise them. Construction is so demanding. Mandatory Saturdays. Mandatory Saturdays and Sundays. Yes. I get time off in the winter, but I don't feel like that's consistent time with your family. If both parents are always gone working, who's raising the kids??? The internet??? Themselves??? Others??? I'm trying a different approach. My wife owes the most money, so she works full time. I get more things done at home, so I work part time. Only 3 days. Finding babysitters are a hassle, sometimes, so I'll take care of my kids and know they are being taken care of properly. I sacrifice a lot of things to probide for my kids, instead. People want to be all rude in construction, too. A lot of racism, bigotry, and ignorance. They say that's how construction is. Then, I show them my fist and show them how I am. They want to get all mad and hate me more and then I get fired. I've gone to Human Resources and then I'm called a snitch. I stick up for myself in many ways and it causes tension. I get more respect by punching them in the face or fighting, but it almost always results in getting fired. I feel like the work hours should be split in half or let some workers work less who can't meet the demands and let the ones who want to work, work, but also demand time off, for peace of mind. Something.

It's the unstable job security and lack of oversight in the construction industry. It's not people with regular jobs killing themselves. It's the people who realize calling a hotline won't pay their bills. People lose their jobs for no reason and can be misled if the ownership or supervisor doesn't like them. This only comes out once they reach a high paying position, or have used them for all they are worth. So spend your life working hard and training only to be replaced by a younger version of yourself who takes a lower wage so they can 'train' which is doing whatever they already can until the company doesn't make enough money off them. Now I'm mad.

I’m a software engineer going through crunch and I’ve barely slept, been working 20 hour days with NO days off for the last month. Some days I work 24-30 hours before passing out only to frantically wake up in a couple hours in front of my computer. What has happened to our world??? We do we keep allowing this to continue???

It is 1775 in the US! Corporations get tax cuts and welfare, and are allowed to buy politicians, but working Americans get nothing. I’ve been both a builder and a white collar worker. What happens to a 45 year old concrete guy or carpenter whose knee goes out? There’s a reason why professional athletes retire in their early thirties. Injuries mount, and few 55 year olds can still build forms or trowel concrete all day in the summer heat. But athletes have money, and working Americans are no longer respected or paid a living wage!
