You might not even have to pay it back. They could likely just not make any deposit into your account for a month or more and balance the mistake out.

@Charles Marvin CERB is a taxable benefit, so it has to be included in your income taxes as part of your taxable income. You're going to get a T4E for CERB for the 2020 tax season and you're going to have to report it. You are freely allowed to not do so, as we have a self-declaring tax policy, but if you get reassessed and have to pay anyway, that's just more trouble for you.

What about ODSP recipients who receive minimal monthly payments many of these people aren't able to do there own shopping and are on tight budgets. My wife got laid off and applied for EI in March. All of a sudden she gets a $2000 deposit in her bank from CRA. What happened to the $600 bi-weekly unemployment cheque? They then say, "you'll be getting automatic CERB payments until you go back to work." So she gets $8000 dollars versus $4800 for the 16 weeks....ya, that makes sense! CRA probably gonna come back in the spring and realize, "hey, you owe us $3200!" Either way, we the people are going to pay through the nose because of all these hand outs. Here is what I don't understand. My self-employed business is dependant on other small businesses, which were closed and are now going to struggle financially for the next year. I've taken the CERB payments and put them in my personal chequeing account to cover my personal expenses. I have not taken a payment from the business since March. I'm doing one or two jobs per month in order to pay my business taxes ($500 a month to the city alone), insurance, property maintenance and utilities at the shop, so the business will still exist if things improve. Those expenses exceed the $1,000 income level, but it's not income as I don't get any of it. Am I still in compliance?

So apparently we received 2 payments because one is for the month of march and then obviously we got for the month of April. But what i don't understand is why didn't they make this clear prior to us applying for the cerb if that is true? What if a lot of people who got laid off didn't get laid off until the end of the month? Then that money would be a mistake. I just want clear answers to all of this otherwise we'd have to give that money back

It was just explained... we are already in the 2nd week of CERB payments... this person probably applied during the second week and so they received the retroactive payment from the first week... so they got both payments of $2000 for week 1 and week 2. No mistakes here... and yes it's taxable. Thank god I'm still a USA citizen.... just got $1200 USD TAX FREE in my bank account today. America issues their stimulus as a tax refund rather than a loan like Canada is doing. US realizes that the economy is going to need people after this over.... Canada is just loaning money to let you buy your groceries and pretend things are OK, then they'll get it all back and the some. Economies are going to be in ruins after this is over.

The government should make an edition to CERB to require 20 hours of recognized community service for every CERB payment or to be taxed at 50% their CERB payment in 2022. Just require the community service for after covid is calmer. Anyone who complains is essentially complaining about being paid $100/h for future assistance back to the communities paying the taxes that support them... Giving out free money helps no one, and encourages people to collect for 16 weeks and drag the economy down.
